Wrong Price and Won't Honour with Receipt.

I was given a price for install and delivery and now they say they wont install. I have it written on the receipt. I double checked with them and the rep told me it was correct at time of purchase. Today they delivered and would not install.

I was called and told they made a mistake and want another $x dollars to install it.

What should I do?

did you pay with cc? is yes, then do a chargeback with issuer.

    • If they charged $69 and now want another $120.
I did say it was cheap at the time and I was told yes and its on the receipt.

I did say it was cheap at the time

If you were prepared to pay the new price at the time you made the purchase then pay the difference.

If you were not prepared to pay the new price, ask for a refund.

        Simples.

Edit. You always then have the option of posting to review/forum sites with your experience. However you should consider how much your time is worth fighting to save ~$60

        • I could have gone somewhere else that is cheaper than what they want in total now though, that is the issue. So I could have had it done for $100 in total and now they want $189 in total.

        • @lukeloop:

Can you not get a refund and go to the cheaper installer?

You should have rejected delivery when you were informed that installation would not be done.

    • I would have thought they would at least do me a good deal but I was told no.

Ok, so I rang and explained the situation and they wouldn't meet me half way so I got a refund on the delivery instead. I'll get someone else to do it.

  • What was the item ?

    • dishwasher

With a dishwasher, there is the trivial "hook it up" install that can be done by any trained monkey, if it is already plumbed in and power available, and there is making the space right to prepare for that.
If you are replacing a dishwasher or it is otherwise set up, just do it yourself - it is just screw on the water hose, clamp on the waste hose and plug it in. There is no skill or experience or knowledge required. The washer will have IKEA style drawings to show what to do.
If you need plumbing or electrical work, you would be doing very well if it is only $100.

        • I understand that it can be a simple job, however there are many reasons why someone may not be able to do this themselves, as not everyone is able-bodied. There are also other reasons that you may not have considerd. Thanks for your advice though.

        • @lukeloop:
Understood, but in the same way it is not practical to hire a person to change a lightbulb for example, this is a similar small job that a friend or helper could readily achieve.
The last place I bought a dishwasher from (I think it was the good guys) offered to install it for $100ish. I laughed them out of town as it is such a trivial job, on par with changing a light bulb for difficulty.
It frustrates me a bit that people seek paid services for help that should be freely given. My neighbour a few years ago had her TV antenna tip over after a storm.
I was a new neighbour, but it was on my side and I saw it, and offered to sort it out for her (I had a ladder and drill etc.).
She declined and got a tv guy out who charged $250 to install a new antenna. I'm not sure why she declined. Maybe scared I might hurt myself, maybe she was worried she would 'owe' me, maybe she wanted a new digital capable antenna.
But I hope it was not out of fear or worry. I want to be a neighbour who helps out, and I seek nothing in return except good natured neighbourly-ness. Mind you, I won't say no if you offer some homemade jam or fresh eggs from your chickens.
Anyhow, she is gone, and we get on pretty well with the new folk.

if they cannot complete the purchase I would tell them to take it back.

  • are replacing an existing dishwasher? or getting one fitted?

  • RING up THE DEPT of FAIR TRADING IN YOUR STATE

join PayPal (it is free) and only purchase if they will accept PayPal or credit card

  • Simple answer. call GM of the company and explain what happened. without threatening advise him that if need be you will take the matter to Dept of fair trading. The GM will get it sorted for you. Always best to go straight to the top with these matters. Alternatively get the person that sold it to you to sort it out. Don't accept it was a mistake. Whatever is they sold you and is written on the receipt is what they are obliged to supply. Like it or lump it as they say. they gotta come good.

    • I wasn't happy with the manager and I will be writing to the owner. I will update in the future.

      • No need to talk to owner. So long as you approached the manager and tried to sort it now. Thats all Dept of Trading want to know. Time to escalate to DFT.

  • Ok, thanks.

  • do they have a facebook page? express your disappointment at their refusal to honour the agreement you had with them.
