I now only buy 2nd hand printers that can be hacked to take generic cartridges or hackable original cartridges.

3 years ago I bought an A3 Brother printer MFD for 99cents off ebay. it's cool. came with full cartridges (/that can be topped up easily).

    still going strong.

  • This is the cheapest laser printer I could find at OW - $159

Refills, you're looking at $109 for black toner and $121 for cyan, magenta and yellow toner individually. Each colour refill can do about 1000 pages. Black refills do 1200 pages.

Out from the box, you'll have about half cartridge of toner for black and colour. So you'll do about 600 black pages and about 500 colour pages.

If I were you, I'd buy a cheap inkjet printer and a monochrome laserjet.

If you're doing light household printing, I don't see any point wasting $360 for colour refills. There's colour inkjet printers at $35, cheaper thank ink refills themselves. You can get offset ink. Probably won't be as good in quality but it'll do the job.

I have the P265DW at home. You can buy a high yield cartridge (2600 pages) for $89 at bing lee or ask OW to price match it

    • Offset ink isn't the correct term for the non genuine stuff

Its either genuine or non genuine

Offset printers aren't in any leauge most people here are going to be in nor afford, from a production technicians point of view, it's either genuine or aftermarket, black and white

I'll also add over the last 20 years the non genuine companies are just about on par with the oem toner if not better and whilst you do lose a small amount of print quality, dependant on print process most of the time the machines run just as good with the non genuine toner

Your budget does not stretch to colour laser. However if you do review budget, highly recommend the Fuji Xerox for flawless performance. Never ever had a misfeed and they are economical on toner and can also use aftermarket.

$95 colour laser printer, free delivery to Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.

Replacement toners are about $100 each so it is cheaper to buy a new printer when the toners run out.

      • That Ricoh printer is garbage
As an ex Ricoh technician I'll tell you now it's just a rebadged machine with a shit paper pickup unit and horrible power supply which eventually dies well before the 3 year warranty runs out

Consumables are also bloody expensive if you're not on a service contract

The machine is almost as bad as the spc range Ricoh decided to release which didn't last long on the market

Power supplies died and they used heaps of toner

I would go the hp over it any day

        • Thanks shawncro 222. I wish you had posted this important info when OzB went crazy over this printer and its mono bonus(https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/191861). However please consider OP's requirements. A colour laser, less than $100, light duty cycle, need one now because the old one is f**kd. For $95 delivered (the bloodly thing weights 25kg, how much is postage & handling?) I think it is worthy of consideration.

        • @alvian:

Short term savings equal long term nightmares but for the price I guess you can take a gamble, they aren't cheap to run and the consumables shit themselves early why I think spending a little more for the hp makes sense

Trust me, 20 years of telling sales guys this and they still don't listen

Those sp100 units weren't too bad but one big flaw trying to get them networked and their bigger sibling the sp101, my god as a technician I wanted to headbutt the idiot at Ricoh who designed those machines

  • You seriously dont need colour do you? I haven't used colour in years! A Brother or HP laser for about $110 will do about 1400 pages on a single toner cartridge compared with 150-300 pages for an inkjet. And sometimes the laser cartridge ($22-$28) is cheaper than an ink cartridge. yep!
Also better resolution and no ink smudge marks.
If you need colour for the odd occasion buy an ultra cheap colour inkjetprinter but use only for colour pages.
