Wondering Can You Register an American Express CC on PayPal to Buy Stuff?

So I have an AE CC and it earns double points than my VISA CC, so its really silly not to use the AE CC more.

Wondering if you can register an AE CC on PayPal as the funding source, and if there is any charges, say, when buying stuff on Ebay?

Heard they (PayPal or AE) will always convert the money to US$ first than to whatever currency it was originally for?

So potentially losing exchange rate differences?

Please share.

Cheers.

    Yes

  • There's no extra fees for using Amex via PayPal. You're right about the exchange rate for foreign currency transactions though. When using PayPal I pay with my Amex for all $AUD transactions and my 28Degrees card for all foreign $ transactions. As long as the original transaction is in $AUD using the Amex is better.

    • Wait, so if I was right, then using AE would not be wise as it will be like converting from AU$->US$->AU$?

I dont think thats true. If you buy from an american site it'll be in USD. If you buy from an Australian site (eg. ebay aus) it'll be in AUD and wont get converted to my knowledge.

  • Using Amex on PayPal is not different to using any other card. If the purchase is from an Australian seller no conversion happens. If it is an overseas seller then your CC conversion charges would apply. You can link multiple cards to your account and select 28 degrees card or something similar for foreign currency transactions and Amex for all other transactions.
I pay my Telstra bills via PayPal using Amex earn points and credit card charges don't apply.

  • I use Amex with Paypal. If the transaction is in AUD you pay in AUD. If its in USD Paypal charges you in USD instead of doing a conversion and charging you in AUD.
