Roommates just switched from Telstra to ACN and now I have no wi-fi signal in my room WTF FML

So for some reason my roommates got excited or conned by an ACN representative and switched ISP plans and now we are on a 24 month contract that is more expensive and I don't even know the size capacity and or quota of the actual plan yet..

Initial tests show a tiny bit slower max speeds than our previous router but that's not the biggest issue of it (we switched from a Thomson TG782T to a NetComm Wireless NF10W VDSL/ADSL WIFI MODEM ROUTER yeah… Was already feeling very bad signs when I read the router on it) it doesn't even reach past the corridor leading to my room whereas the previous router could easily reach the end of the house and most definitely 70% of my room haha lol on most nights but just ever so slightly (like definitely a 75% speed reduction).

So yeah basically I am here now asking if anybody:

1) has any experience with ACN and their service / customer support / products / etc

And/or

2) knows of any good routers or WiFi extenders / repeaters / etc that I could use to boost the signal to my room (of the top of my head I know the ac1900 nighthawk from netgear is a good contender and I know some of a lot of people recommend TP Link I just forgot which model)

Budget looking around the $150-300 range of model but of course if anybody has or know of any good better cheaper models that will do the job I am more than happy to try it.

    You seem a trifle confused.
The ISP network won't impact your wireless range.
Just configure the old Thomson with the new ISP details and your wifi will be like before.

I don't know what "the previous router could easily reach the end of the house and most definitely 70% of my room haha lol on most nights but just ever so slightly (like definitely a 75% speed reduction)."
If it means the old router was better, just switch back to it with the new settings.

    • Or use the second router as an extender

      • How can I setup the second router as an extender? What's the generic settings or protocol / setup that needs to be followed to do so?

    • Yeah I am very confused atm. How would I go about reconfiguring my old router with the new ISP? The new modem they setup came preconfigured. All I have is the ssid and network password.

      • You should be able to get ACN guide you thru the set up of the old modem/router. Just give them a call and say you have a new modem and like to configure it.

        • Cheers thanks currently in the process now of dealing with them

On second thought just decided to go and try and read a few articles and try and repurpose my old router into the new wireless access point / switch / repeater / bridge / etc for providing a better WiFi signal to the other end of the house.

    • Aren't the Telstra routers fixed with Telstra isp settings?

      • Mine isn't, and it is the second one I have had. Mind you, I have had it a couple of years and have no memory of whether it required any special hackers to get access.
I will admit it doesn't have the fxs VoIP ports enabled, and I never chased down what was required to make them work.

I have the Router only version which has great range.

Before swapping with routers I would strongly advise you check which actual WiFI channel the two routers are using. You might find that the Thomson is already on the least congested either by fluke or design:-

2.4GHz devices have 13 channels to choose from (at least in Aus). It's hard to explain, but many will default to 1, 6 or 13 to maintain as much spacing as possible and hence the best WiFi signal.

If you have too much overlap then you will experience poor WiFi and wonder why.

There's various tools out there for IOS/Android/PC but I often use the Android App WiFi Analyser as it's simple and quick. You need to find the lest used channel and basically set your router to use that channel. To do that you will need the username/password for the router which with luck will be in your joining paperwork, otherwise it may still be at default which is often written on the bottom of the router. Frequently it's admin/admin or admin/password. You can download instructions from the Netgear site.

You might also like to post this type of question on Whirlpool.

Edited to say that in any case you were evidently at the extreme range of the Thomson so may still requite that extender? I've tried heaps privately and professionally and can't say I've ever been 100% happy with them unless they have a wired connection back to the main router. Is it possible to throw run a cable as near to your room as possible and add a wired extender at that point? For this kind of thing I use the TP-Link TL-WA830RE. It will do WiFi / WiFI extension as well.

    • I'd wager they are set to auto.

      It's 1, 6 or 11 isn't it?

      • Yep - typo due to buying wine at the same time with the CM offer………..

Possibly is auto but in my experience they don't always make good choices, e.g. just a day back I had to correct a channel conflict at a customers place where a new router had chosen Ch2 right next to their POS ordering system which was at Ch1. Result - a very unreliable POS ordering system…. Moving to Ch6 and all fixed.

What is ACN? I've never heard of them

    • Honestly better to keep it that way. They are a MLM networking company.

      • You mean Pyramid Scheme? Or is it a trapezoid?

        • Both haha lol I dunno now these days. They are basically questionable at best.

  • I know that feeling. Beard two people trying to workout why their internet plans were different prices, then one figured that the more expensive one might have more data.

It just sucks that they didn't consult me first as when it comes to tech related stuff I usually am OK with these things compared to the average Joe of the street. Especially the guy who chose it. I pray that he is faking or just friendly trolling me but the other day he asked me what a double click and copy paste was. God why have you forsaken me with these idiots. No offence.

      • Hahaha ikr

  • Get ethernet over power EoP and plug one socket near the router and attach a lan cable then plug the other socket into your power point in your bedroom and enjoy.

    • Can you use EOP over daisy chains? I.e power outlet extenders

Both rooms have no free single sockets per se

      • Provided they aren't the surge protector kind, yes.

If you don't mind buying used (still with 1 year warranty, and a low failure rate on these), you could go for something like this, which include AC passthrough.

        • When you say surge protector kind you mean the daisy chains right not the wall socket/outlet right?

        • @AlienC:

Yeah, some of the daisy chain outlets would be fine if it's just a standard, cheap one like this. Could have trouble with a board like this as it has proper surge protection.

        • @donnot:

Does that eop from eBay brand/model have an access point or wifi? I will be using it mainly for my shield tablet for now and maybe a laptop or tv/console in the future.

        • @AlienC:

No, the ones with Wifi cost 3x as much+, so the idea with these ones is to just plug one in and connect that with the main router (in this case the Netcomm), and plug the second one anywhere in the house, and connect the second router to it.

Will just need to configure a WAN port on the second one.

        • @donnot:
          Ah I see got it

        • @AlienC: what i have done is use these in my man cave then set another router to be a hub and connect all my computers to it…. not a bad setup and works.

      • I thought the pass through power, the ones I have ( provided by Foxtel)do.

  • WTF? FML! TLA FTW!!

    • Haha lol lmao omg bbqwtf lol
