Can You Buy a Gift Card with a Gift Card?

I have about $150 worth of Flybuys points and I've been thinking about converting them into either a Coles or Target gift card and then using the gift card to purchase another gift card, either a Coles/Myer, Westfield or JBHIFI gift card. Is this possible? Has anyone done this recently? If it's possible, which store do you think it would be easier to buy the gift card at, Target or Coles?

  • Pretty sure the answer is no. That would be a lot of effort for not much point.

What do you base this on?

Coles should be easier for sure. Just go to a self-serve checkout.
Not precisely the same, but had to put up a bit of fight recently to buy GCs at BigW using WISH GC, went all the way up to the "area manager" for approval.

Works at wollies usually ( I do it all the time at woolies in Sydney cbd), Coles no

I can confirm that I can purchase an EBgames giftcard and purchase a PSN card with it… not what OP asked though

  • +3

    Yes you'll be fine.

Sometimes the staff at comes say no but at self check out you'll be sweet.

Some posts on forums are saying that Coles has a new system that stops buying gift cards with gift cards, but I have not verified the info.

I usually buy a $500 discounted coles giftcard do my weekly shop & put the remaining balance onto a coles/myer giftcard but in the last few months when I've tried to do this at different coles stores in my area at both self serve & normal checkouts the terminals wouldn't allow it not the operators. It kept saying i had a prohibited item in my shop & i had to remove it apparently the checkouts in my area have new software to prevent purchasing a giftcard with a giftcard. That said someone else on here commented in the last few days that they were still able to do it .

    • That's very interesting. I wonder if all Coles have upgraded their systems or just some? Maybe I might be better off trying this out sooner rather than later =P

I have done for iTunes & google play in Coles self service .

That's different to buying Gift Cards for bricks and mortar stores.

Why not just use the points at Coles for your grocery shopping, then use the money you saved to buy a gift card from another source?

    • My point exactly

    • If I spent the points on groceries I wouldn't bother to buy a gift card by other means. I don't actually need/want a gift card, I was hoping to use these points to buy myself something I wouldn't normally buy and using it with some other gift cards I have rather than spending them on boring groceries that I would be buying regardless.

      • 2 of my local coles were upgraded yesterday, and the staff were struggling with the new software. A 3rd store hasn't yet been upgraded. Looks like they're progressively rolling out this upgrade

      • Have you logged into your flybuys account to see what you can purchase direct from there with your points? They have a ton of stuff from household goods through to theme park tickets, although the value may not be as good as getting a gift card.

They even have JB HIFI gift cards on the flybuys sites you can buy direct with your points. $50 for 10k pts or $100 for 20k pts. Just get one of each and you have your $150 to spend at JB.

        • Yeah, I have had a look, but you're right, I figure I'll get more value with a gift card. I actually forgot that there were JB giftcards offered direct on the Flybuys website, I might go that way. I have a few Coles/Myer gift cards already, and I was hoping to bundle them with another one from Flybuys to get something from Myer (and in the process rack up more MyerOne points and get more gift cards lol). The thing I want is also available from JB so if it's going to be easier I'll just get it from there and sacrifice the MyerOne points.

      • Just use the FB points to save money on groceries. Consider this. Is it better to get $5 off a $10 item or to buy the $10 item at full price and then later find $5 on the street?

The answer is that it doesn't matter. Since money is totally fungible it is the same $5. You're the same position financially in both scenarios. It's your mind that makes it feel different. Free your mind :-)

So converting 2000 FB points to save $10 on groceries you are going to buy anyway leaves you at the same position as if you bought something for $10 discount at JB Hifi.

The best answer is your results will vary when it comes to Coles. I've bought 3rd party gift cards with discounted Coles giftcards before but as mentioned in comments above, the systems keep on changing.

A couple of months ago I got my weekly shopping (around $50) and a $50 Coles Group Card. I paid for all of it with a Coles egiftcard and didn't have any problems with the payment process. This was on a staffed checkout, not a normal checkout.

If you buy groceries at the time of your giftcard purchase the staff are less likely to realise what you are doing and will put the transaction through without question.

    • If you buy other items, sometimes you can even take the other items back for a cash refund.

  • Assume that you have already looked on the FlyBuys Website and none of the available 14 Gift Cards (granted not a wide selection of stores) you are interested in converting points into the Gift Cards? JB HiFi is one of the Gift Cards that you can use 10,000 pts. for a $50 Card.

    • I have some other Coles/Myer gift cards that I plan on spending at Myer soon, I was hoping to get another Coles/Myer or Westfield giftcard using the Flybuys points so I could use them all at once. It's been a couple of weeks since I looked on the Flybuys website, I actually forgot that they did JBHIFI cards straight from there. Thanks for reminding me =)

  • if you convert the FB points to FB money on your card, you can use it as a payment mechanism and therefore won't be buying a gift card with a gift card. You;ll just be buying a gift card with EFTPOS!

That was my initial plan to do that, but according to the terms and conditions on the Flybuys website you can't do that, so I don't want to risk doing it that way. I was hoping that the gift card plan would be the loophole around it.

      • I've seen that on the terms and condtions. I don't know whether Coles expect the staff to enforce that condition or whether they have programmed it into the checkout software.

I purchased a gift card using flybuys dollars as well but I bought other groceries at the same time. The groceries were less than the amount of the flybuys dollars on the card so some of the flybuys dollars went towards the purchase of the gift card. This was a couple of years ago however so the systems might have changed.

I'm not sure but I've had a few problems, including long waiting times (up to 10 minutes) when buying discounted vodafone sim cards (50% off at Woolworths) at the self serve checkouts when paying using a gift card.

Is it because the machine thinks the sim card is a gift card…?

Does anyone know if someone in the backroom has to approve it or not? Or is it just really slow…

  • Anyone know what is the go on this these days? Flybuys have reduced the GC's you can redeem recently so there is no JB Hifi or any other electronics retailer. I was thinking of converting to Coles GC's or Flybuys Dollars to go purchase GC's, is this still an issue?

    • Last time I tried, you couldn't use flybuys dollars to redeem on Gift Cards

      • I was asking in another thread about the lack of JB HiFi gift cards at Flybuys and someone in that thread mentioned buying them with Flybuys dollars. Are you certain it won't work?

        • +1

I think you can only redeem them if you have a Coles Financial product. YMMV; I couldn’t use flybuys dollars to buy a Google Play gift card last time I tried

  • Made the experience myself this week (Feb 2022), I converted my points into Flybuys dollars in a matter of seconds via the app, hoping to buy JB HIFi Gift Cards. Was not able to do so at my local Coles, but went to Kmart and managed to purchase multiple gift cards, swiping my Flybuys card at payment.

    • Do you have a Coles Financial Services product?
