Choosing a New 40" FHD TV

Hi all,

I'm in the market for a new 40' FHD Smart TV and my budget is $500 - $800.
The main purpose is for watching movie, PC and PS4 Gaming.
I'd prefer Samsung and LG but I've also been looking at other brand like Toshiba, Panasonic and particularly Hisense, which is $200-$300 cheaper than Samsung.

Could you please recommend a good TV and bargain?
Is the cheap TV brand like Hisense, Soniq, TCL any good?
Would I need 100 HZ for gaming or just 50 HZ?
Which stores should I get the TV from?

I am located in Victoria btw.
Thanks all.

  • Might want to add this 43" LG to your shortlist?

    Apparently it's discounted.

But ironically that TV is probably comparable to this TV that was going for $230: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/270480, and you could get a 49" 4K Kogan for $550.

If you can wait a few weeks or more, it's probably best to take your time and see what deals pop up.

IMHO you don't need a "smart" TV when buying a ~$40 Chromecast will probably do just as good a job, if not better.

  • I liked this one: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Panasonic-TH-40DX600U-40-101c…

Wait for another ebay sale? Got it for $790.40

  • We're nearly at xmas. Should be some decent sales, pre or post, maybe?

  • Choice magazine latest review on televisions recommended the Panasonic Th40DX600U rrp $1090 but as stated above by bluedufflecoat they bought it for just under $800 on sale. The other 40" tv recommended was Samsung UA40KU600W rrp $1298 .

  • Smart TVs are stupid

  • Thanks guys,
Is Hisense TV any good by the way? Why are they so cheap or is it just the badge?

    • The only Hisense 40"tv Choice reviewed was model number K321UW scored 62/100 wasn't recommended but no major issues rrp $1000 my advice would be if you find one you like in the shops to google it & see if you can find some reviews on it .

    • I have had a 39" Full HD Hisense for 2.5 years. I think it's excellent for the price I paid ($297 with this deal). The antenna cable socket is in a stupid position on the side, but I just bought a right-angle adapter.

It doesn't look cheap or tacky either.

One thing that has happened, is that some of the terminals have started to rust. However, I live right near the beach so everything rusts. Plus I usually have the balcony door open next to the TV, so the salt spray comes straight in. There's always salt spray on the windows.
