Average Speed Camera

Hi all, I have just been up to Bathurst for the weekend from the Central Coast, on the M7 I noticed a sign mentioning "We are monitoring your average speed", not speeding I didn't think much more about it…as we were going down Mt Victoria Pass there were 'Average speed cameras' and again out at Bathurst.

Has anyone ever been booked, or know anyone that has via either of these locations for average speed violations?

As far as I know, average speed is only used for heavy vehicles, at least in NSW.

    • Yep, in NSW only for heavy vehicles. Other states do use it for normal cars. I think eventually NSW will too…

      • edit: never mind, I've checked my facts now.

  • Don't know anyone that has, but the technology relies on number plate recognition software. You see the cameras usually on the underside of bridges, snapping away.

    • They also (at least used to) do aerial speed checks against spaced painted lines on the road.

I still don't know how average speed targets speeding drivers.

You could sit below the speed limit for a while, then speed for a while and still average the speed limit.

    • They're probably more trying to track down truck drivers being forced to get to destinations quickly with no rest rather than pure instantaneous speeding.

      • They're probably more trying to track down truck drivers being forced to get to destinations quickly

They have other means for that already.

And in other states average speed is used for passenger vehicles.

        • The have other means for drivers averaging under the speed by complementing fast driving with slower. Averaging is not attempting to be the sole technique. And if a passenger has averaged over the speed limit, might as well nab 'em.

        • @Janko:

My point was, it isn't accurate if a person stops for a little while or slows down.

Then they could go well over the speed limit for the remaining stretch and still be under the average.

"Point-to-point speed cameras Measuring the average speed of vehicles over long distances, point-to-point cameras in NSW are only used to monitor the speed of heavy vehicles."

    http://roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au/speeding/speedcameras…

    • A truck is monitored and does 400kms in 3hours 40 minutes. The truck must have done an average speed > 100 km/h (which is its legal limit). Therefore at some point it must have been speeding. Therefore Truckee gets a fine.

  • WA is getting it's first point-to-point speed camera in the coming weeks on the Forrest Highway and it will be targeting all vehicles, not just heavy vehicles. It's over a distance of approximately 18km's…..it's gonna be the first time I've sat on the speed limit over such a long distance. Just need to remember it's there the next time I travel through.

  • Does anyone know if average speed cameras are also instantaneous speed cameras? Some average speed cameras are so far apart you can take rest stops inbetween. So if it only monitors number plates, can you just stomp through them?

  • Thanks everyone…the one down Victoria Pass is a mandatory low gear 40kph zone…can understand that OK…the one at Bathurst heading east seems strange…the one on the M7 is probably a psychological ploy at car traffic, to keep evert body at the designated changeable speed limits.
