How Often Do You 'Win' Luck Based Competitions?

I've never been good at luck, however I did win in a 25 words or less competition the game 'Witcher 3' many months ago when the game came out. Won approximately $70 worth of value?

Apart from that, I have won random small prizes such as movie tickets and as such. I'd say out of my participation, I'd win about 1% of my entries.

I was wondering if anyone has been a lucky winner of many sweepstakes or similar competitions? As if so, what goodies have you scored?

BONUS: If you are a usual winner of the 25 words or less game, what's your game plan?

I use to enter almost every competition I came across a few years ago and had quite regular wins but nothing of any huge import. Won a lounge, $1000 cash, various gift cards, DVD's, concert tickets etc. But these days I really cannot be bothered with the comps, they have become so much harder to win and a lot of them now require Facebook (which greatly reduces odds of winning due to the huge audience on there, and I do not have an account there anyway). 25 WOL comps are hard, and who really knows if they read through every response or just pick one randomly, I have seen some pretty ordinary answers win over the years. Comping is not as profitable as it use to be that is for sure. You see middle aged women on competition forums buying products and entering all day long but it is more for the thrill than anything else, use to be quite a few people in the forum who entered would win, but now it is much less, so many just end up wasting money and on useless products that they wont use.

  • Ten years ago approximately, the one time I won a $100 doorprize I left my winning ticket at home…….. still waiting for my next luck since then

    • Would you call this luck, or unlucky?

  • I do mainly 25WOL or a little bit of luck. I go small, as I'm mainly after theatre tickets and experiences. Enter through newsletters, 25WOL on fb. Never popularity contests, and there's nothing worse than a loop giveaway! - That and the rafflecopter, share/spam, follow on all the platforms.

Coolest thing I've won? A set box of special timtams, back when they first came out. Tickets to a Krispy Kreme tour, awesome MSO concerts (this was a one year, cbd limited comp, a painting pop ups overnight, first 20 to take a pic and share won), tickets to the adult circus, a wardrobe organizing set (the most useful thing I've won) and my mother's favourite - a year's worth of soup-in-a-cup for the office. I work from home, alone. There were 420 sachets.

    • That's a lot of soup!

Actually I also forgot, got a few workmates together and did a photo for a Facebook comp for Ben & Jerry's. We were one of the winning groups, and won a ton of icecream!

Let's just say I was Mr Popular that week!

I think it worked out to nearly 100 pints

I won a 5kg promotional Cadbury block in a "finish this sentence" comp.
I won a hand held dyson in a 25 words or less comp. The question: Why do you need this? The Answer: Have 2 French Mastiffs with a penchant for vacuum hoses and rolling in dirt. You need me to win to prove how good Dyson is!
I won a random draw for IMAX tickets and a copy of Prince Of Persia game when the movie came out.

But I have entered many many many comps. Stopped doing mail in ones when I worked out how much postage I was going through, only do online now.

  • Won two Imax tickets earlier this year via Facebook when Suicide Squad came out, unfortunately I had already seen it by the time I received the tickets and they announced they were closing down so had to go see Secret Life of Pets. I can understand after going why they were closing for renovation.

  • Won the Espionage raffle to buy the Pirate Black Yeezy 350s. Still costed $260 but resell value was well over $1000.

I very rarely enter competitions due to laziness, but I've been pretty lucky when I do!

When I was 8-years-old, my mum let me write my name on a Kmart sweepstakes competition form - ended up winning the first prize - a Ford Capri (sportscar). That same year, I also won a $200 gardening voucher for a colouring in competition at school and a $200 meat raffle.

Won a $900 mountain bike when I got a free raffle ticket with entry into a UTS Dance Party in my uni days.

Husband asked me to write a 25-words-or-less entry for an all-expenses paid trip to the NT. Won that.

    • Awesome! what did you write with the NT trip? I'd love to win a holiday one day. :)

I won Grand Final tickets with the promotion those chip companies run.
I didn't believe it when I entered the code and it said I won the "Major Prize". I still didn't believe it when they gave me $700 spending money as part of the prize and when I took delivery of the tickets. Only started to believe it until I scanned the ticket and they let me into the MCG.

That was about the last thing I won

  • Won a gift card, a few movie tickets. That's all

I always wonder if anyone won a car by signing up or subscribe newsletter

  • +2

Won two holidays, both to the USA.

One was an SMS comp on TV. It was the last day of my credit before I had to recharge so I just entered until I was out of credit (maybe 20 times?). Got a call a few weeks later and thought I was having a prank pulled on me.

The other was a single entry on the web. I thought I was entering to win a BBQ and didn't pay much attention to them. They emailed me about a month later, I almost deleted the email because I thought it was spam!

I've won a couple of other smaller things vouchers, movie tickets and a laptop from the Dick Smith Facebook page which was a question about your favourite computer memory or something like that and I wrote about how I loved my computer growing up and then my parents threw it out and I was distraught!

I enter occasionally, well whenever one pops up, just got to keep a positive attitude and not really expect anything to come of it. If you win awesome, if not, oh well!

  • Just joined the QLS, attended a conference and won their survey prize. Also won 200 on scratchy once.

The lady at the Mall said I won a framed family protrait worth $350. After 2 hours photo shoot session my credit card is down $2000 :(

    • This also happened to me when I was 18, except I didn't have a credit card so they put me on a 2 year intrest free repayment schedule. Ahh the young days, so naive & so stupid.

    • Beware of photographers, they do that at wedding expos. Everyone "wins" a photoshoot and gets one standard printed out photo.

  • When Kit Kat were doing a promotion with Google a few years ago I won a few $5 Google Play vouchers and a Nexus 7 tablet.
That's pretty much all I've ever won.

    • Nexus 7 tablet.

Pretty sure I saw those flyers at 1 of the local IGAs only a few months back! I was like "oh cool, no one has mentioned this yet!", checked the dates on the terms, entry forms were like a year or 2 old!

Take a picture and email Google. You could probably get some Play Cards out of it ;)

      • It was the 2013 model I won, so more like three years ago =p

Ive entered a handfull of luck based comps. Never won a thing.

However I enter a fair few skill based comps (mainly photography/IG comps) and only enter when I know I have a chance of winning or a great idea etc.

    So far I have won:
An Intrepid food tour in Thailand including flights ($2000)
An Air Asia photo comp, ($1000 spending money, $1500 worth of camera gear, $2000-ish worth of flight tickets)
    Hello world comp ($2000 voucher)
    Shin Ramen ($300 dinner voucher)
and a handfull of other smaller photo comps ranging from $20-$100 vouchers/cash/prizes etc.

Got a few more in the pipeline which I have a good chance at winning so will wait and see if this list grows!

I've got you all beat! A Nigerian prince is about to get back to me with about $205 million dollars. All I had to do was provide all my bank details, credit card, driver's license, tax file number, and a bunch of other details. Scanning in my passport and both sides of all those cards was a bit of a pain but worth it. I quit my job this morning and now I'm just working out what I'm going to spend my money on and where I'll retire. First I'm going to buy a boat.

  • Mine I've tracked from here -

Win Various Prizes from Boost Juice 'Free The Fruit' - Android/iOS App — 2 prizes
Win Assorted Prizes from Roller Fortune Instant Win — 3 prizes
Win 1 of 3 Lilysilk Packs from beautyheaven — 1 prize

    Total: 129 entries, 6 wins

There was a LOT more on the boost juice game though - I worked out I had gotten more than $100 worth of free boost juices so at least 15 wins on that :D

The best competitions to enter are in store ones - I used to work in a pharmacy where we would have a few 'win in store' competitions and almost noone ever entered them so the odds were huge. I ended up winning an awesome Jim Beam steel chequerplate esky in an in store competition (even though it was a national contest) so I'm sure those competitions are the same everywhere.

During my teen years my luck was awesome - I've won tickets to gigs, free cds, eskys, videos (from waaaay back in the day!) t-shirts and heaps more.

Every now and then I get back into entering, but I havent had so much luck as I did in my hey day :P

  • I did won a nokia mobilephone (around $200worth) back again, just by tweeting a tweet in the audience of around 100, yeah thats pretty good and the only win i ever had

  • I recently won a leafblower and assorted other prizes, a cd player in a raffle, a jb hi fi $50 voucher and some post it notes in a work raffle. The smaller the comp, the higher the chance of winning. The last 3 prizes were won in small local competitions. I also won a boat trip for my class when I was in highschool.

  • Won a surface Rt, Dali Zensor 1 speakers, Sony Muteki Speaker, 5 sets of good headphones, $100s of Giftcards, Movie tickets etc.

Once I entered a movie competition 9 times (3 different sites with 3 different addresses) and won 9 double passes!

    • Were you the only 9 people that entered?

      • Hah! It ended up costing me money as I was going away on a trip so had to mail them to various friends. 9 x postage stamps. Doh!

I entered my first ever '25 words or less' competition late last year: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/223826

I remember coming home from a night out in town after having too many drinks — unable to sleep, I randomly entered a few competitions on Ozbargain. 3 months later, I get a message on Facebook stating I'm a runner-up to the competition and I've won a $1000 Flight Centre voucher! I initially thought it was a prank as I had no recollection of entering the competition! Turns out drunk me is a creative genius.

Given I'm currently living in London for the next few years, I plan to use the $1000 voucher to book a short trip back home to visit family and friends in February 2017. Return flights from London are EXACTLY $1000 so essentially a free flight(s) :)

  • I once won Asus Tablet(latest then) from Western Digital during their promotion period.

  • Won a Wild Turkey poker table a few years back from an SMS comp. Besides that, can't recall ever winning anything else……

  • never in my life

also a relative of mine has been in the surf lifesaving lottery for 40 or so years and never won a thing.

For competitions I actually entered: 0
For competitions that I did not enter: I think I won about 10 or more. Supposedly, I won UK jackpots 5 times, US jackpots 3 times. Those winnings apparently require me to pay tax first.

Does the free mars bar promo count? Back in highschool we won like 20 bars in a row :)

I won a trip to Sydney to play SimCity (2013) a few weeks before launch. EA paid for flights, accommodation, dinner :) we had to sit outside in a giant glass box in 35 degree heat, was not the best and I felt really sick that day from lack of sleep and the heat. Spent a lot of the contest in the toilet dying sadly.

Won the boxset of Game of Thrones books from StudentEdge 4yrs ago but still haven't opened them from the plastic

Won double pass to see Warcraft at IMAX for an advance screening on 7th June, it was awesome

This is a bit of a story butttttt a few years back UBANK had a competition buy a Heraldsun/The age (can't remember) and the first X amount of people to enter will get a 20 dollar credit to their account.

I read the TC's and C"s and realized the competition opened midnight that night not the day of the sale a friend and I got maybe 10-20 papers each to see if it would work. Bang on 12 oclock we started getting wins, jumped into cars and drove around buying all remaining Heraldsuns that weren't packed away from servos that were still open

Ended up both winning like 2K each.

I also won a Sony TV with similiar TC's and C's something along the lines of "First entry on this date' so I waited till midnight and did it.

    • I would love to do time based entries. The next time based entry comp I can think of is the 7/11 day

  • I have never won a lucky draw, its about time the started unlucky draws so that guys like me also get a chance.

  • Total: 656 entries, 1 win.

    ^Enough said.

Only won a runner up prize of a DVD via a Civic Video comp.

Umm…I won 2nd place easter raffle in year 2,4 and 6 :) then I'm pretty sure that luck went down hill and I've won nothing since.

  • I just won $1000 out of a $50'000 prize pool in a semi-luck based new competition based on Game by Game Fantasy AFL Football.
It took a bit of effort (if you call going to the pub once a week to watch footy, effort!) but first place was worth $20'000, second $10'000, third $5'000, all the way back to $500 for twentieth, as part of the final.
Check the deets here, it's pretty fun to get all your mates involved.

Never won anything significant but a few years back, my credit card was running a promotion/competition to get 30% cashback on purchases to a maximum cashback of $1000. Wasn't mentioned it was a lucky draw or first come first serve. Nevertheless I had to pay a deposit down for my wedding caterer and lo and behold 8 weeks later, I got $1000 back in my statement. Was super psyched about it to finally "win" something big for the first time.

  • There's an upcoming 7/11 comp! Start loading your film!

The promotion will be conducted from 12:01am AEDST on 07/11/2016 to 2:00am AEDST on 08/11/2016 (“7-Eleven Day”).

  • Does everyone use their real name when entering competitions? Just wondering what happens if you win a major comp using a fake name?

    • Why wouldn't you?

Seriously, what is the harm in using your details?

    • Definitely need to use your details even little comps sometimes want proof. just be picky about your entries check t&cs

Won the $5 sweep for Melbourne cup again this year. I only work part time so wasn't there when they found out I won but rumour has it everyone just groaned. 😜. I started work late so I got the last horse drawn so everyone else had more chance than me to win. I am super lucky. I'll have to start entering competitions a bit more again though. I've only won one more overseas trip since my AMA last year -not luck based that was skill.

    • What skill? :)

Lol 'only' one more - Might wanna re-think that ;)

  • I've never been good at luck, however I did win in a 25 words or less competition the game 'Witcher 3' many months ago when the game came out. Won approximately $70 worth of value?

I used to enter those all the time because I thought, what's there to lose? But all that spam in your mail? It originated from somewhere. Take a guess where.

And no, I've never won one of those. They're not even drawn under government supervision. There's no way to verify there was ever any prizes up for grabs to begin with.

I stopped entering these long ago. One, out of cynicism of winning anything, and two, to avoid spam.

  • I only win 'game of skill' competitions, I don't think I've ever won a random draw competition.
Actually maybe just herald sun entries for sporting tickets, think I got some AFL and soccer tickets through those.

My success rate in skill based entries is very high - I enter knowing that I've already won. I'm very tactical.
I've never won a trip though, only items!

    Some of my winnings are:
    - Signed Sydney FC jersey (photo entry)
    - Standing laptop desk (25 words or less)
    - $500 Nike prize pack (25 words or less)
    - $1000 Rebel Sport voucher (photo entry + voting)
    - 55" 3D smart TV (photo entry)
    - Sony Rx100 IV camera (video entry)

My tips are to carefully read the T&C's the understand your best chance at winning, and put in a little more effort that everyone else's entry. Also check the number and quality of the current entrants to see what you're up against.

    • Haha, sounds like you are my direct competition! I do the exact same and have a very high success rate of winning (see my post above and now just below) Prizes over the past two years have totalled about $15,000 :D

      • Just read your post! Indeed we have similar styles.
Where do you usually source comps from? If not ozbargain? Because I'm so selective I find I never find enough I want to enter.
Jealous you are winning holiday/flight/trip related prizes, I never seem to win those.

        • I have a few places. However I have noticed a definite drop in skill based comps the past year or so.

          Sometimes I enter from here.

Photo contest insider is a great site.

Friends also send me comps they come across, especially anything travel related.

I few camera stores and other places have monthly comps I enter most months (teds camera has one each friday on their FB page)

I also follow a few "Compers" on IG and check in on their profiles every week or so and backtrack the hashtags to find the comps. These people enter every insta comp without much thought and never win haha.

    • Have you noticed that skill based comps have pretty much disappeared and its all sign up and lucky draw now days? Maybe we ruined them by winning everything? haha

  • Merged from How Lucky Are You?

Have you ever won something significant in your life which worth $$$? I think the most I ever won so far is $15-20 from lottery (yeah not significant at all, just my luck).

    • Nope.

    • I once had a dream I won the lottery. I couldn't shake that feeling so during my lunch break, I headed to the local hotel and played a round of pokies. After spending $3 I won the statewide jackpot of 10k.

    • i once found $2 on the ground

The fact that I live in Australia, make me believe I am very lucky :-)

      • Agreed. Not many places or times in history when it would have been a luckier place to be.

        • People keep saying that as I watch housing, health care and education slip beyond the reach of many.

        • @syousef:
Fair points, and I agree over a 5 year time frame or so, but over a decade or few it doesn't get much better anywhere else.
All the more reason to point things in the right direction for the future Aussies.

Best i have managed was back in 2005 Vodafone competition,
All expenses paid for 2 to the Monza F1 GP in Italy. Included flights,5 star accom, private transfers to the track each day and into the corporate f1 paddock where we were guests. Got to meet Michael Schumacher & Rubens Barichello and also full put walk.

To win you had to txt a codeword to a certain number. best part was if you were a vodafone customer your entry was free. There was no T&C saying that you could only enter once.. so over the next 3 days on lunch breaks and while sitting at home watching tv just kept sending txt after txt.

3 days later got a call from Vodafone and i was shitting my pants that they were calling to say i was about to be charged for the 1000's of messages!! but no she was calling to say I had won!

Merged from OzBargain Competitions Entries: How Often Do You Win?

    Hello,

For those OzBargain competition entrants, how often do you win?

I've won 1 gift card in the last year which was awesome and it's great the refer friend chains work for the competitions.

I was generally curious about people's entry habits and how often they have success. Concerning my entry habits, I never re-tweet or publicise competitions but sign up for lists, follow etc.

    C

    • I am addicted to the competitions section and would probably average 1-2 wins a month. I stick to Australia only competitions and also don't retweet. The refer a friend definitely works, I have won a Bissell Pet Carpet Cleaner and a Kettle and Toaster from stancash because of OzB referrals.

The majority of wins are usually movie/sporting/concert tickets, although I have scored $500 cash before from Canstar and even won a couch from Fantastic Furniture! All of my wins come from OzBargain so a huge shout out to gnv9 who does so much work in that section.

  • Merged from Free Competitions Has Anyone Ever Won?

Now lets get this straight there is a loads of competitions posted on ozbargins which are free to enter via facebook, twitter, etc

These usually take personal details like your mobile number and E-mail resulting in the endless spamming from junk mail and telemarketers.

There are 1000s possible 10s of 1000s of members/viewer on Ozbargin has anyone won? NOW when I say won I am talking about prizes with a value of greater then at least a $500< Ie new mobiles, cars, holidays etc

I’d say I’ve entered several hundred … never won anything…..

So has anyone else or are they just scams to get your details?

    • -2

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/448314

sigh what else don't you believe?

Me personally, off the top of my head:
Trip for 2 to Bathurst including hot lap
      Dyson V6 absolute
      Xbox One halo edition
A few custom eskies (with TV's, radios etc)
      Power banks
      Toaster
      Gift cards
      Eftpos cards
      Movie tix

    • I don't believe majority of prizes by random unknown websites/groups/streamers etc are real but instead are just designed to collect your data.

Some of them and especially major brands (e.g. ASUS) definitely will be real but they're mostly all international so expect tens of thousands to enroll so chances are minimal.

The Aussie All4Adventure one was real for sure: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/413726

      • -1

I'm not doubting it's not real but why point to that 1 in particular? Were you the winner?
