Kogan Warranty Offer for My Defective LG G3

Hi all,

I need some of that lovely Ozbargain advice for another warranty issue. A few weeks ago I sent my LG G3 off to Kogan for a warranty claim (deadzones on the screen). They've just confirmed the defect but stated that it wasn't possible to repair and that they don't have stock to replace.

They've offered me the below as replacements:
- Motorola Moto G4 Plus 4th Gen XT1642 Dual SIM (32GB) - Kogan retail price $399
- Asus ZenFone 3 ZE520KL Dual SIM (32GB) - Kogan retail price $379

I originally paid $439 (plus postage) for my G3. I've never seen a retailer offer a different product like this for a warranty claim before, is this a normal practice these days? Especially to offer replacements with lower retail cost!

My biggest gripe is the 1080p screen, I've grown very fond of the 1440p on the G3. I'd be annoyed to lose NFC too.

So Ozbargainers, what do you recommend?

Update: Thanks all, have decided to go with the refund. Will probably wait for the next deal on a Nexus 6P.

  • And no double tap to wake! Damn it!

  • Nexus 5x

    • I can see plenty of accessories for the 5X on Kogan, but not the actual handset.

I second the recommendation for the Nexus 5X.

The options they gave you are inferior, in particularly their SoC's.
Ye olde QSD 800, 801, and 805 really hold their own.
The only chips Qualcomm makes that are comparable are the QSD 650, 652, 653, 808, and the QSD 810.
The Snapdragon 820 and 821 are far above, in a league of their own.

Otherwise, just ask for a refund.

        • Thirded. When my G3 broke I got given a 5X as a replacement, best phone I've ever had.

But then that broke and they gave me back another G3 :(

  • I wouldn't take either, I'd tell them neither of them has what you originally wanted in the LG G3 definitely go for either a refund, better phone, or same replaced phone.

  • gee not just L4 L3 also have issues. bootloop mainly. well need to stay away from this brand.

    • My Nexus 5X was built by LG… its been happy days thus far.

      • So was my G4……then one day.

  • How long did you use the LG G3? If you had used the mobile for months then you will not be eligible for a full refund. The retailer/manufacturer is allowed to take depreciation into account for calculating refund. This is as per Australian consumer grantee. But this does not apply to Kogan.

    • Had it for about 14 months. I know that is a possibility but I've never seen a retailer actually enforce it.

      • i thought kogan only has a 1 year warranty period?

        • Looks like they're honouring Aus consumer law.

        • @ashanrath:
When Kogan began offering refund or replacement on the G4 (I didn't but from Kogan) that was a great PR move. I'd certainly be tempted to buy grey import from Kogan…
QD-AU said they have to recieve the phone back to them within 12 months for the warranty to be valid.
Not to mention the delays with comms, the freight delays and rejecting delivery of my return parcel. Certainly don't know customer service brings back repeat business.
14 months is a decent service.

  • I'm not sure how can you push overseas seller for refund. I would say choose from option they provided.

  • In my experience with Kogan, you have to specifically ask for a refund. They will never offer one up on their own.

    • I'm getting that impression. I've replied to their email and asked if they could do a Nexus 6P (I'd be surprised if they said yes) or if not that I wanted a refund.

Ask for a refund. What they are doing with offering you a phone of lower value is illegal. They ARE NOT going to give you a 6P. They might let you pay the difference for a 6P however.
