Woolworths eGift Card Details Hacked and Funds Emptied

I just noticed that one of the e-gift cards I bought recently from this deal was used by someone else in woolworths chullora and as per latest comments on this thread same thing has happened to at least another 2 ozbargainers. I have called Woolworths gift card service team on 1300665249 and let them know and they are investigating now. Please check your egift cards if this has happened to you as well

  • Thanks. One of my gift cards don't work at all. Says I've either got the number wrong or the pin wrong. Will have to call them tomorrow too.

  • Woolworth send out eGift card details via email, including the pin, so if your email account was hacked, then the person would have access to all the card's details….. (ps: 500 millions of Yahoo's email account were compromised…)

    • Don't know about others but my email is secured by 2 step verification process so I doubt it's been hacked, although anything is possible. Edit- I use gmail

  • checking balance via the woolworths money app gives an error says the server is offline

    down for system maintenance, and has been most of the day tues oct 25th

    But used today at Woolworths petrol and BWS without any issue, and balance shows on receipt.

  • This is worrying, I have some WISH gift cards I haven't use. Checked the balance and seems OK, hopefully they've solved the issue.

  • Interesting. My Woolworths Money app has not worked for about 5 days. The balance does not update and the app claims it's offline. If I restart the app I'm told the system is undergoing 'System Maintenance'. Could it be that the eGift card system was hacked and Woolworths has quietly pulled the whole thing offline? It would be worth asking Woolworths officially and going to the media if true.

    This could be a very big story.

    • feedback i got from staff was that the app will be working again from today. I reckon the app was compromised and led to these hacks and now they are trying to fix the security risks

      • Came to this thread from Googling the Woolworths Money app error message. This is worrying, some kind of official announcement would have been nice.

    • call Woolworths gift card service team on 1300665249 and let them know about this. Most likely they will send you a replacement plastic gift card after some investigation

    Is it back yet? I've been trying to check using https://manage.everydaygiftcards.com.au/ but it still says Temporarily Unavailable. Is there another way to check?

    • If you go to the Dan Murphys website add something to your cart, then go to checkout and select redeem gift card, then enter your gift card details u can get your balance but not your history. Just don't go ahead with the purchase if you are just after the gift card balance.

  • Has everyone that has had issues been using the app? Have you got the Android or iOS one? I am starting to get really worried as use giftcards all the time.

    I'm interested in whether the transaction happened in-store or online.

    It would help to determine whether we should as as community stop purchasing these e-gift cards until we find out where exactly it was compromised. It is our money, in the T&Cs it even states we lose out if something happens to the gift cards. We have a right to know.

    In the meantime, I suggest to others to keep only as much as required on your e-gift cards and use them in the week you get them.

    I live in Melbourne and the transactions happened in Burwood plaza in NSW.

  • My $50 eWish card was emptied on 24/10/16 at 12.01pm in Burwood Plaza Woolworths.

  • Just saw this thread. Had an egift card emptied around the same date as your forum post, at Burwoood Woolworths. Burwood seems to be the hot spot. Hopefully they have the scumbag(s) on video each time, & are investigating.

    Also used the app to store my ecard. Might have been the weak point as no problems with anything else since. Changed a load of passwords as precaution after the theft.

    Reported to the gift card website within 24 hours of use by thieves, & had a replacement plastic card sent out after about a week. Customer Service people were very nice about it.

  • Just noticed one of my eGift card was emptied on 20 Oct 2016 from a location I have never heard of (or been to).

    I contacted Wish Gift Card support online and will ring them tomorrow as well.

        Funny they sent me a plastic gift card. Did not give me the choice of egift card. But after having that stolen the plastic card is what I wanted!

        • The didn't give me any choice either. I waited for days but didn't receive any call. Checking my email and saw a replacement eGift card sitting in my spam folder.

    I would also like to point out that both Wish Gift Card and Coles (& Myer, etc.) Gift Cards enhanced their websites in late Oct/early Nov to require ReCaptcha ("I'm not a bot") check.

    It seems someone (or a hacking group) brute forced the systems to hack the 4 digit PINs.

    I don't believe ReCaptcha is the solution (there are ways to bypass them cheaply). I actually like Westfield gift cards way better because they use Ref number instead of pin to check balance.

    Coles Gift Cards have Reference No. printed but is not used for balance verification.

    called Woolworths gift card service team on 1300665249 and was told wait up to 48 hours for response.

  • Sorry for digging this post but this just happened to me recently. Bought a $250 wish card from Qantas store which has multiple transaction in Werribee and Point Cook that I don’t recognized. May I ask what was the outcome some of you had back in 2016 with Woolworths for this problem? I called them but they seemed to point to Qantas for this matter.
