Possibly Sold a Used Console from Target

Hi guys

Last year I purchased a Xbox One Kinect bundle from a Target store. The box was opened so a request was made to note this on the receipt. The person serving me was happy to do so and advised it was a new console, not a returned one.

Earlier this year I contacted Xbox Customer Support regarding a separate issue. During this call, I mentioned that I had been unable to register the console on the Xbox website for warranty purposes. The Xbox representative offered to register the console for me over the phone then advised that it was out of warranty. This was odd as it was purchased in September 2015. With Microsoft offering 2 years warranty, it should last until September 2017.

I wanted to find out if this console had been previously purchased or registered. Management at the Target store initially agreed to give a refund then did a back-flip pending further investigation. Xbox couldn’t provide information regarding registration of the console other than the warranty dates.

Xbox have provided me with different and conflicting information such as:

  • The manufacturer’s warranty period was from June 2014 to June 2016.
  • That this manufacturer’s warranty starts from when a console is assembled.
  • There is a possibility the it may be a return or refurbished console.

I opened a case with the Department of Commerce WA and the lady looking at the case has mentioned the following:

  • Target has been advised by Xbox Customer Support there is no way the console is used.
  • If I can’t provide proof that the console is used they will close the case.
  • I asked her if the warranty dates I had been given from Xbox would be enough proof and she wouldn’t answer.

If anyone has any further advice to support my case, that would be appreciated.

If the warranty is for two years it should be from date of purchase.
You may not be able to prove that is was used easily.
But if it's faulty and cannot be registered then you should be able to get a replacement or refund under Australian consumer guarantee.

  • the whole this seems ridiculously stupid to me.
you have the receipt with the purchase date so either Microsoft fked up or target staff member did something wrong and it was returned.

Id say target screwed up as whats their reason for having an unsealed xbox ive never seen an xbox on display at a target store. has to of been a return.

At the end of the day you don't care about MS. You have 2yr warranty via Target as they sold you the console. Focus on them.

Their claim that the warranty begins on manufacture date is laughable though.

  • barely a year old?? You have a receipt?? Deal with target directly!!

  • It's hard to prove an item is used after you had taken it away and opened it. I recently purchased a quadcopter only to find that the remote control cover is loose when I opened the box. I knew that was trouble but luckily the remote control still worked after I reassembled it. It would have been a nightmare to take it back to the shop to prove anything.

You need to focus on the real problem and that is the xbox registration or a full refund. You won't get any information out of MS.

  • I remember years ago purchasing an Xbox 360 with HDMI port from Big W Seaford SA when it was on sale (stupidly cheap + staff discount on top thanks to a family member). Box appeared sealed, but cannot remember checking too closely. Unpacked it, has a quick look at my new toy, and straight away noticed screwdriver marks on the back of the case where someone had obviously pried it open!! Not happy Jan - straight back it went for a new one. They swapped it no questions asked.

It can happen - if a staff member is dumb enough to accept it back as a return, then stick it back on the shelf, thinking they're doing the right thing. What crap that the onus is on you to prove it's used :/ (Yes I know Big W isn't Target, but its proof that it can happen - dodgy customers + stupid staff = anything can happen!

Unfortunately as so much time has lapsed, you might not get anywhere with this - hope you do though… it's the principle of the matter!! One of the reasons I am very hesitant to purchase anything "opened" or "unsealed" (plus it detracts from the feeling of being the first to open a new toy :)).
