Connecting Laptop to External Monitor

Hi,
My laptop screen has given up and want to connect my laptop to my desktop monitor to extract my documents. How do I go about doing this? My laptop only has USB and HDMI ports. And my desktop monitor only has a VGA connector.

If you're just extracting documents, why not just connect it via HDMI to a TV rather than wasting money buying an cable/adapter you may never use again?

  • you could connect your laptop to your tv as well if it has a hdmi.

  • The documents are inside the laptop.

so you use the laptop as a filing cabinet! do you like the sound the keyboard makes?

  • interesting that people mentioned using a TV monitor. I have a Samsung 32" for my TV and other needs, it isn't well placed to use as a "monitor" but given it's size it may work despite sitting far away from the screen. So you're all saying that a HDMI to HDMI cable from the laptop would suffice? can one VGA to HDMI connect from laptops that don't have a HDMI port?

Do you need software or does the cable instantly cause the laptop to transmit to the screen you've connected to upon plugging in?

    • It will suffice and you can use a connector VGA to HDMI to output to TV. I used many different pc's and laptops to connect to TV with HDMI. OS should pick up new monitor when TV connected and show display with no effort. Give it a whirl, you will be pleasantly surprised.

      • Great! I thought you might need certain software but if it activates automatically that would be pretty cool. If I had a multi-function new age laptop that could become tablet mode where you could invert the screen down and use the keyboard on your lap whilst connected to the TV - that would be pretty cool.

I had never tried as now I had a HDMI to USB cord where I plugged usb thumb drives in for copied content from my laptop to play movies or media for the mrs (keeps her entertained) :)

        • Hey no worries. As long as the OS is somewhat out of the stone ages, it should work without any extra effort from you. Get a wireless keyboard and mouse and you may find yourself using that setup a lot.
Also the laptop may have a presentation button/feature, so you can disable local screen and only output to TV.

  • If they are on the same network why not just RDP to the laptop or browse \COMPUTERNAME\c$ to get your files

  • if chrome and installed and set to run in the background (set if default) you could use remote desktop to transfer anything to yourself
