Cathay Pacific (ranked #4 airline in the world) and Etihad (ranked #6) are having a sale on flights to Europe. Travel in Nov and Feb.

For the routes that Etihad flies, it is often the roughly the same price as Cathay Pacific but has a shorter stopover time from Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. Cathay Pacific also has London, Paris, Rome and Manchester on sale (but they are a bit more expensive than the destinations listed here).

    Most of the really cheap business class fans require positioning though. Fares from Australia are usually really expensive in Business Class. That said I would like to see great business class fares too

    From experience, Cathay allow for HK stopovers (usually an extra like $30-ish or so i've found) and they also allow for open jaw bookings for similar prices e.g. Syd to Mad then Ams to Syd I would expect, would be allowed for the same/similar price

    that's half the problem, i think there's like 9 ranking companies, and they all have wildly different top 10/20s, so at any given time there's like 20 airlines going "we're in the top 5!"

    i like to think there's basically 3 tiers

    T1 - full service 'trusted' airlines (included luggage, food, booze, everything in the ticket price) - qantas*, virgin*, etihad, airnz, singapore, cathay, emirates etc
    T2 - medium service (ie might have to pay for luggage or not get proper meal service, or they might be slightly sketchy) - malaysia (could be t1 depending on your point of view), qatar, garuda, china southern,
    T3 - no service(pay for goddamn everything, but 'at least the base ticket was cheap') - jetstar, airasia, tiger, scoot, ryanair etc.
    *long-haul international stuff i mean, not domestic/bali econo-flights

    and with that, if you book on any t1 airline you're usually in for a good experience (i'm sure 300 people will offer their differing opinions but on the whole you should be OK). the T2 stuff can be good for a mix of cheap fares and still get reasonable service. the T3 stuff is fine if you travel by yourself with no luggage and don't eat or drink and want to save every last penny, but can work out more expensive than T2/T1 carriers once all the seats/luggage/meal/booze costs are taken into account depending on your circumstances.

        i haven't flown with a huge amount of carriers, but Air NZ consistently impress me and i can't say i've felt overly cramped, singapore have been great too. (admittedly i'm only 5'10")
        can give you feedback on etihad after march, but air nz will get you to north america and singapore will get you most of the way, if not all in the other direction to europe (infact air nz will actually do auckland - lax - london)

        on the domestic side of things, if you can get in the first ~12 rows on a virgin flight there definitely seems to be more leg room than down the back. i spend a lot of time in rows 3-6 (economy) and occasionally will deliberately book myself in the back row (i'd rather a spare seat next to me for arm room rather than leg room) from about the emergency exit backwards all seem definitely smaller with the knee clearance :)

  really need some help. need to book flights to milan end of feb for 10 days. korea air has $1050 rtn. with all sites when i try to do stopover prices go up considerably. yet it incs one free stopover.on skiddoo emirates is $1266 but it doesnt even allow multiple flights search. the fare allows one free stoppver. on emirates website the best price i could get is $1355.

  so annoying. i end up taking the fare to flight centre for price beat and they can organise free stopover.

  btw we booked msc cruises 8 days aud $400 for triple share. only $440 for twin. its oceanview. genoa, rome, palermo, valletta, barcelona, marseille and genoa. I am really hoping to pay $1500 inc flights so need the cheapest fare but willing to spend an extra $200 if it's Qantas/Emirates for shortest route there.

  For low season might be worth waiting for cheaper fares since there's even $950 fares now to Rome.

  Help Ozbargainers! it's a girls trip so we need to spend as lil as possible.

  This is such a bargain holiday as tge cruise is all inclusive. a shopping day in milan, day trip to cinque terre/la spezia, and probably have to stopover somewhere on one leg due to long connection. we cannot be away for more than 13 days inc travel.

    Try Thai Airlines, we did a cruise from Rome this year and used them with a stopover on the way back, Flight was only $1143 return from Brisbane. Another option is to look at what airmiles you have and use them for at least one flight?

    I've always found that there is some kind of free stopover addon whenever I go to travel agents. That's why I just take the cheapest deal I see and email an agent.
