+ve for your efforts in linking and commenting but I feel like most of the specials this month are a bit of a yawn. Mostly slow-sellers and new product launch specials in there

    • +4

I feel that's the direction these monthly members specials are heading unfortunately :(

    • +5

Yawn indeed. Wild Yak is mid strength at 4.1%alc too. I think I might give the Dundee India Pale Ale a shot, I know its not part of the special but $55 for 6.3%alc content beers comes to 43 standard drinks which ends up almost better than any 4x six pack special of the month like tiger at 5.0alc, and 31standard drinks for $40. Even a Zywiec Porter gets you 60 standard drinks for $90. Monteith Doppel Block 5.4% $51 for 38 standard drinks. Much better tasting beer out there if you get a slab and then you're almost getting as much alcohol content for the price.

On this topic, any more bang for your buck beers out there with a seemingly "high" price but still with just as much content? I miss the twistled thistle and pintails!

      • +8

Wild Yak is also cub which means #cub55 boycott

        • +5

If anyone's interested, I know my beer and Wild Yak is insipid. Barely any beer in that water, and a long way from the fruity hops I was promised. Get yourself a Sierra Nevada Torpedo or Weihenstephaner Hefeweizen or a Coopers Stout if you want a bit of flavour.

      • +1

if you're after ABV per dollar then why not just buy wine?

FWIW dundee IPA is nice regardless of its alcohol content

        • +5

More of a beer drinker. I'm just comparing what are considered average tasting mass produced beers in Tiger, Wild Yak and John Boston wasn't very nice either, to higher quality beer and showing it's not much of a bargain. May as well just go for a full slab if you'll only drink 2 ipa's each evening instead of 4 tigers. I bought the golden hen last week which had 4.1% for $34, not much value for money, but quite nice taste value.

          Here's another: Wicked Elf Porter. $52. 6.2% 38sd

I guess my point is that they're not exactly taking too many risks with their monthly specials. Would be nicer to see a lower abv drink or mass produced beer as a slab special for $30 or 2x6 for $15-18, instead of 6pack for $10-12. Or a higher quality IPA/porter for a $30-40 or 6pack for $10-12. They should write-off the monthly specials as 'break-even' or very marginal profit deals, like they did with the recent ipa deals that were near expiry. They won't go broke and will increase new customer numbers and sales as more people flock to the specials.

I've barely drunk any monthly specials for the past 6 months, all they seem to do as give a six pack the 1/4 value of it's slab value, instead of over-pricing the 6

        • @johndemonik:

Do you have any other recommendations for high ABV beers? I'm usually a lager drinker but having trouble finding something that's reasonably priced that's over 5%. I've cleaned my local Dan's out of the Heineken and Chang that they've had on special lately, but getting a bit sick of Heineken, I drank it because of the price not because I thoroughly enjoy it :P

        • +4

@bonezAU: my 2 cents- Cooper's Sparkling 5.8%, quality ingredients, can be had for $52-55 on special. I also enjoy the Cooper's extra stout, 6.3% regular price $60 round here but obviously not a thirst-quencher like the Sparkling is.

        • @bonezAU: Have a look in at Polish beers like Zywiec, Perla, Zamkowe and others if you like your lagers - most have an alc % between about 5.5% and 6%. Even though they are macrobrews, the higher alc means they have a bit more length in the flavour stakes. Also try German 'Marzen' beers, which usually come out in time for Oktoberfest. They are in the same alcohol range and are really full-flavoured. You're usually looking at about $6 for a 500ml bottle for these though. The Polish ones you can pick up for between $4-6.

Otherwise, dark beers, IPA's and Belgian beers often get up there. Feral Hop Hog is about 5.8%, Sierra Nevada Pale is 5.5 from memory, Little Creatures IPA is 6.3%, even James Squire's IPA is 5.6%. Of course, none of these beers will be as cheap as your Chang/Heineken odyssey since our damned government taxes by alc volume :(

        • @bonezAU: Have you tried to Gage Roads Sleeping Giant IPA? 5.4% usually around $53-55 at Dans.

  • Thanks OP …FYI the Gage pale is 6 pack for $12 you forgot to add the price in the post :)

  • lets get drunk…

  • +3

Gage Roads have been making some fantastic beers, the Single Fin is one of my all-time favourites, up there with Cricketer's Arms Spearhead and Karl Strauss Pintail. Must try this Breakwater. Feels good supporting a WA brewery too :)

    • Try their Little Dove. One of the better pale coloured beers in this country IMO.

    • +2

Gage Roads were phenomenal when they started, and then CUB bought them out and ruined real ale as they continue to do. Still make okay beers for the price though, but it's depressing to think about their constraints when they could be making great beer like so many others are these days.

      • +2

I think you mean Matilda bay.

Gage were bought out by woolies. And have now ceased that arrangement.

        • Ok, good to know. Too hard keeping track of which megabrewer owns what but I remember a promising brewery rapidly dropping in standards not long after they came onto the market. Hoping they improve now that the arrangement has come to an end!

  • +4

+1 for Gage Roads and Tiger, both well worth a punt.

Wild Yak on the other hand was forgettable in every way.

  • +2

Rekorderlig is only the 330ml bottles, not 500ml. I knew 4 for $13 seemed to good to be true. Somersby for $40 a carton's a good price though!

    • That's annoying, it fooled me too! $40 a carton is decent, good how you can mix and match the pear and apple too :)

      • only 12 bottles a carton?

You can get 10 bottles of Somersby for $15 at Coles liquorland atm.

        • 24 bottles in a carton.

The 10 bottles at Coles liquor land are actually cans and I think they taste mediocre compared to the glass bottles.

        • @ShamelessBargains:

Oh really? Thanks for pointing that out. I wouldn't drink cider out of a can either. I barely tolerate beer out of a can these days!

        • @serpserpserp: Yeah it's just not the same :/

        • +1

          @ShamelessBargains:
Cans shouldn't taste any different to bottles (infact they should taste better, in the case of beer)
All cans now have an inert plastic lining that stops any metallic twang that you used to be able to taste.
There's a reason why so many craft (and big) brewers are changing to cans, it's such a better packaging option

  • +3

When oh when will Dan's have a special for us dark beer lovers again?

    • I used to buy the Stoke darks from NZ at my local Dan's. They were unbelievably good value until they stopped selling the longnecks for 3.90 each! X<( still a good beer tho

      • What are they priced at now?

        • I think they stopped selling the longnecks, and the four-packs of stubbies aren't cheap, maybe $13.90?

  • +1

Went to buy some Orchard Thieves cider only to find Dan's discontinued it. Was one of the best I've had. Damn :(

    • Have you tried the Goulburn Valley Pink Lady? Really, really nice cider that tastes like the apples it's made from! They stopped selling it at mine but check yours. They also make a Granny Smith version which is okay.

  • +1

Pure Blonde Cider is rubbish in my opinion. I had to mix it with Lemonade because i didn't want to pour it down the drain…

    • +1

PureBblonde is for people that need to drink alcohol but hate themselves. You are clearly not this kind of person.

  • +1

Picked up a 6 pack each of the tiger and gage roads to try came to $21 don't know why I got it $1 cheaper.

  • Does 1st Choice price beat DM member offers?

    • +1

iirc, no, they don't. Its written in their policy on price-beating.

  • +4

The Mountain Goat Pale is the best offer of this lot by quite a way.

    • By all measures but raw price alone. Yet, forsooth ye walketh among ye ozbarg'nerds…

      • +1

        Wut.

  • The Yak is about $46 per case on the Coles and Woolies dockets at the moment.
