  • What does the lack of band 28 mean?

    • +2

If your with Optus or Telstra then there will be some instances where you wont be getting your maximum 4G speed.

    • +2

What I heard is weaker indoor signal and poorer coverage in rural area. No impact on Vodafone.

      • Other way around I've found - slower 4G in cities, though same speeds rurally (Eyre Peninsula, SA rurally, Melbourne/Adelaide cities) on both Optus and Telstra.
In the past it was band 28 for rural areas, though they've recently being acquiring/recycling other bands to 4G.

      • +6

"No impact on Vodafone"…is that because vodafone already has weak signal indoors and no reception in rural areas?

        • Ouch

      • i'm in darwin, and my reception has improved since changing from my iphone 6 to this… i went from being barely able to surf in my room on 3g/4g to having no problems now. Even WiFi i'm getting greater connections, weird.

    • 700mhz frequency, the main benefits to the lower frequency is the better it is for indoors reception and gives a further distance signal so proviedes greater coverage in rural areas that use it.

    • +13

Band 28 is overrated. All I ever read and hear is the obsession with band 28. Band 28! Band 28! I used to have a redmi note 3, with no band 28 and it got great reception like my Australian delivered note 5.

I live in Darwin and frequently travel to outer parts and it's on par with the note 5.

As long as it's got the majority correct bands for Australia you should be right.

Of course band 28 DOES help, but it's not going to make your phone redundant.

      • +1

Now don't quote me because I'm probably wrong but my understanding is that 4G is all about download speed not reception, so you are getting your good reception in the bush on 3G.

      • +2

Yeah I was always big on band 28 as it was nominated as the national 4G band for Optus & Telstra going forward. I figured it was going to be like the Telstra 2100 when they rolled out the 850 nextg (where they said they were going to not roll out any more 2100 towers & moving to get rid of it.

But I don't think they're in a hurry to get rid of the other frequencies.

The big thing for the 700/28 band is that they have large frequency blocks to allow for faster data speeds.

But 5G will be here in a few years and it'll all start again!

        • I was expecting to be negged pretty bad when I wrote the comment, however it seems im possibly not the only one.

I just roll my eyes when people carry on with not buying a perfectly good phone for an excellent price because it lacks band 28.

Of course having band 28 is a bonus and great, but people need to understand it shouldn't be a sole reason to not purchase a phone.

Yes i shouldn't have wrote just coverage but download speeds also.

  • Only if my $300 Moto X Style dies today…

Pre-sale, sale? Is that supposed to mean the sale before the sale is cheaper? I always thought it was the other way around.

    • Nah, the post-sale sale is the cheapest

      • Isn't it? That's what I thought too.

        • Wasn't able to test at time of posting. Worth trying.

    • Thanks. I'd take Mi5 over this

  • How soon do these guys ship? I saw that nextbuying is unbelievably quick - reaches you in 4-5 business days. Any idea if these guys are as quick?

    • its a lottery. do a search both here and on whirlpool and you'll see the range. I ordered on 5/10/16..the countdown timer for end of presale reset three times. I paid extra for EMS shipping. The phone (redmi note 3- Kate) arrived today. That's one day short of a month.

      • Damn. Can't wait that long! THanks for letting me know mate

  • +2

Thanks for putting "No Band 28" in your title, which saves my time clicking in.
    Oops I still did.

  • Can someone recommend me a Xiaomi phone around the $200 price range that has Google play installed? I'm looking to buy one for my mum and it doesn't need to have the greatest of specs.

  • Can these phones do simultaneous 3/4G? Or does the second SIM switch to 2G if the first is at 3/4G?

    • +1

      Simultaneous 4G/3G.

      • Band 28 a big loss. Can you screenshot that?

      • Awesome, thanks!

  • +1

And this has same camera sensor as the much overhyped pix$el

    • +4

Now it just needs the camera app to do the fancy post-processing :)

  • +3

    Bandwagon 28 represent.

  • Can't decide between mi 5, 5s and the 128gb one. Help!?

    • depends on do you really want a better camerea.

      • +1

Good point. It does sound great so will have it for +$50 i guess :)

  • I need to replace my dual SIM G4. But band 28 is a big loss.

I'm with Telstra and the 2G shut off is 2nd Dec. So, every single phone manufactured TO THIS DATE that has sufficient features (incl B28) that's dual sim (AND dual active - where 4G is used on 1 sim and - at the least, voice calls can be received over 3G on SIM2) doesn't even exist. That's a massive gaping whole in the market because manufacturers are too busy locking bands out of phones for carriers in different region they've paid no attention to 2G and it being a thing of the soon-to-be past. It seems to be "too much" to ask for a good 4GX dual sim phone in Australia that handles 4G/3G radios simultaneously.

The lack of Google play (or peoples inability to root and add it) and brand unfamilarity will hurt Xiaomi's sales. I dont see too many dual-simm users jumping on board as the above "common" features required are now being implemented into new/planned models.

    • +3

      The lack of Google play

      ??? where is this mentioned

Almost every Xiaomi buyer on ozbargain has purchased a phone with Play installed, from what I see of previous posts.

      • I'm pretty sure Xiaomi's phones lack Google Play out of box.Unless that changed with the last couple of new models?

        • +2

the redmi note 3 -global edition(kate) that I received today came in a shrinkwrapped box, and upon turning it on had miui 7 global edition installed with playstore already loaded. It was all good.

        • @Gr8deel: Thanks. Hm. wonder if it's phone specific or thigns changed on recent releases. I read many reviews of their phablets/tablets that didn't include it

    • +2

      Mate, Motorola Moto G4 Plus

      • B28 ✓
      • Dual Sim Active ✓
      • Google Play Store preinstalled ✓
      • Show me proof of dual active? Do you own one?

        • +1

Yeah the Moto g4 is dual SIM 4g+3g.
So is the Moto z Play from memory.
So is the new lg v20, and a couple of others.

I'm looking at the v20 as it has the 3x slots for sims and memory card, the Moto g4 has this too.

        • +2

Technically the Moto G4 Plus is Dual Standby 4G/3G, not many handsets are dual active.

The Moto Z Play and Moto Z are also dual standby 4G/3G.

Note that you can set priority to voice meaning if you're using 4G data on SIM1 and a call is received on SIM2 it will stop your data and receive the call. This is the setup most users would prefer.

I don't really see the benefit of Dual Active, just means if you're on a call on SIM1 you can be interrupted by another call on SIM2. I'd rather the call on SIM2 be sent to voicemail as I have no need to have two simultaneous calls.

        • @daft009: Yeah there's dozens and dozens of flagship or high end devices out there which are dual sima nd dual standby, but 99% are 4G/2G. v20 is a nice phone, but lacks what I'd need in it - dual sim capability :(

@CLoSeR: The Zenfone 3 Deluxe is reported in some places as dual active, but i don't believe this is the case. You're right, not many are DA. But I'm yet to see single proof of 2nd SIM's 2G bands disabled and set to 3G only, where a call can be taken on SIM 2 while SIM 1 4G data is active (or temp disabled to receive the call). You seen any videos or screenshots on these phones reviews??

        • @roosta: what about the Oppo f1s? i think that is a dual standby phone which runs both 4g on both sims or 1 4g and 1 3g. Please correct me if i'm mistaken.

        • @roosta:

The aussie version of the V20 will be dual sim, dual standby 4G+3G, hence being sold outright only at JB, no carriers are taking it on board, I suspect because of that.

I too am looking for dual sim 4G+3g as I do quite a bit of international travel.

        • @angelkulit025: That model is dual standby, not sure if 3G voice works with 4G on SIM1 (or if it disables the data to take a call). Lots of phones claim this, but i'm yet to see one with it working where the voicecall is confirmed on 3G only band

@daft009: I only see the Nexus 4X, K10 and X Power sold on JB… If we are led to believe articules about this, it's a week away and will cost over $1000. LOL. Asus Zenfone 3 Deluxe might be far less popular, but specs crap on v20.

        • @roosta:

The Moto G4 Plus will do what you want, I have one. 4G on SIM1 and 3G on SIM 2.

Sim1 is setup as my personal SIM and I have it setup for preferred data use on this sim.

Sim2 is my work number and I am able to receive voice calls and SMS and MMS on this number flawlessly.

        • @CLoSeR: Can you please go into your dual sim settings, go to sim 2, change it to 3G only / WCDMA (nothing else) with 4G active on SIM and then try having a voicecall to your work mobile and see what happens?

The Moto G4+ is a little under spec'd for me, since i want a propper LG G4 upgrade.

        • @roosta: Take a look at the Moto Z which was just released.

As per your query, if I go to Settings, Mobile Networks, SIM2, Preferred Network Type. There are two options "3G (recommended)" or "2G"

It's currently set to 3G (recommended)

          Under SIM1 I have the option of 4G (recommended), 3G or 2G.

Lastly under Sim Cards configuration if I change my preferred sim for Data to SIM2 the options above are swapped. So either slot can be elevated to 4G, it's not restricted to slot/SIM1.

        • @CLoSeR:

OK great. So what happens s when sim 1 4g data is active and someone calls you on sim 2. If set to 3g then you should be getting a call on that band. Does it pause the internet, or switch internet on sums when call comes through? What manual setting cover that, or is it automatic?

        • +1

@roosta: I don't notice anything significant, if im using data for example watching Youtube and I receive a call on Sim2 the call just appears like any other inbound call.

Voice has priority so the call is just received, perhaps if you have data set to priority the call will be rejected?

Only thing which caught me by surprise when I first configured this handset is if I receive an MMS on SIM2 the data connection will temporarily switch to SIM2 to download the MMS then switch back to SIM1.

        • @CLoSeR: Appreciate your help buddy.

  • DHL shipping is fast but no guarantee Geekbuying will ship it when they say they will. i.e. plenty of stories of shipping dates bumped.

This phone doesn't have Gorilla Glass protection — it's just plain ol' glass according to review and the gsm arena guys managed to actually scratch the display after a week of use

Screen protector recommended by GSM Arena.

  • All gone? :(

  • Does anyone can recommend me a good Xiaomi phone which is fully campatible with Vodafone network? I am very confusing, there are many versions of Mi. I am thinking of Redmi note 3 special edition and Mi Max, but not sure. Thanks.

    • I'm with Vodafone and I am using Redmi note 3 special edition with no issues.

      • this website is not up to date, I just checked the Xiaomi Mi5, it is actually compatible with Vodafone network (B5 -850Hz), but the website says not compatible.

        • Are you sure it's LTE?

        • @closey:

Yes, I read the information on geekbuying website

        • @divious:

Thanks for the info. Looks like it only applies to the "White International" version of the Mi5 (which I didn't even know existed!). But it's only got 3GB/32GB, with no memory expansion :(. I would like at least 64GB storage.

Edit: Looks like the non-international version white/32GB has the same bands. Very interesting.

        • @divious: Geekbuying live chat tells me that the 3GB/White model with 850MHz listed (363112) is out of stock. I tried to get them to clarify whether it has B5 but they wouldn't say anything but "out of stock".

  • This phone isnt worth it yet unless you are chinese. There is no global rom. This is a bigger deal to me than lack of band 28. Could take around 6 months to get full english support.

  • how difficult is it to find a ROM to flash to and get Google Play?

    • Xiaomi.EU ROM. Need to get developer permission from xiaomi though but I managed that in ten minutes. YMMV.

  • +1

just wait Xiaomi Mix its stunning

    • is it international version or still lack of band 28?

      • No B28 for the Mix.

        • Hi,

Thanks, so the Redmi Note 3 is the only Xiaomi phone supports band 28, doesn't it?

        • @divious: Yep the Redmi Note 3. The Xiaomi Note 2 might be getting a Global Version with B28 but I could be wrong.

  • is this out of stock. There's no button to place the order?

    • +1

Looks like the case. Marked as expired now.

I just wish Xiaomi used Stock android instead of there crap MIUI garbage.

    • +1

Well you know what they says, one man's garbage is another man treasure.

  • +1

Any one wanting English Roms with play store etc.
    Just use this
    https://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/6-10-27.35843/

They support plenty of devices, updates are weekly and MIUI 8 is great.

  • Received this the other day. It came in English and with Play Store already on the phone (I selected Hong Kong as my locale during setup). If anyone else struggles to get NFC working — it's far less sensitive than my old phone but still works — make sure to target the chip which is near the camera (e.g. with a YubiKey).

Other than that and the fact the weather app doesn't work for any location (known bug, should be fixed), great phone for the price.
