Great price for the 4GB RAM & 128GB MODEL AU$464.11

    • +26

      cheapest iphone ever

  • +21

This is what the Pixel should have been priced at. You can buy two and a half of these instead.

    • +2

What can you do with half a phone?

      • +4

Depends which half… or if it's split right down the middle, in which case it'll very quickly become a fake Note7. :P

      • Split screen :p

  • +4

Lovely. Anything on the mi5s plus?

    • +3

I would love to…However, I received an email from them for Mi 5s only. And as a true ozbargainer, I shared with my fellows!!!

  • +6

Wow, almost the same spec as Google Pixel for very reasonable price :)

I wish these were easy to put a custom ROM on them.

    • +4

Yeah, these look great. Unfortunately, no other Android device manufacturer provides the duration of updates that Google does on their own devices. If they did, I'd be snapping something like this up in an instant.

Custom ROM support for the Xiaomi devices also tends to be pretty poor from my observations, sadly.

      • +1

From memory I think the Redmis are better supported.

Popular phones with unlockable bootloader will get ROMs, really.

        • +5

'Popular phones with unlockable bootloader will get ROMs, really.'

So long as the manufacturers don't get in the way (e.g. not releasing kernel source, etc) that's a good summary of the situation.

Right now there's actually a great opportunity for a manufacturer like Xiaomi to come and take over where the Nexus line has disappeared. It seems like OnePlus is on the way to doing that already, but I'd be happy for two of them to fight over the niche =)

        • @2be8:

Been trying to get my Redmi Note 3 unlocked for 3 weeks now.
They have royally screwed enthusiasts the way they have handled their locked bootloaders.

        • +1

          @Danthemanz:

I think there is an unofficial unlock tool on xda.

I'd find it for you if I Telkomsel would bother upping the speed of my LTE.

        • +1

@Danthemanz: have you been sent an approval code? It's been a while since I unlocked mine, but from memory I recall flashing the official Chinese Rom first, then running the official unlock program. With the global Rom it would get stuck partway through. I've been running CM13 for a few months now and it's been rock-solid. If CM/AOSP was available reliably on the mi5s then I'd be on it like stink on a monkey

        • @ebosh:
Yeah i got my approval and ive tried it all.
Their support forum is just full of people with the same error, no one getting anywhere with them.

          Very disappointing.

        • @Danthemanz:

I had the same problem, but I used a guide posted from whirlpool which unlocked using the unofficial method- https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2566258&…

        • +3

@Danthemanz: I'm on mobile so I apologise for the appalling formatting. Also I'm not sure that this applies to the Kate model.

method you used to flash China developer ROM

In a nutshell, downloaded the Chinese developer ROM to the phone and flashed it via the built-in updater app. Once that was done, tried the unlocker tool again and it worked. Once it was unlocked I used the MiFlash tool to flash the Global stable.

          Here you go
          http://en.miui.com/thread-223915-1-1.html

Scroll down to where it says the following and read on from there. x

          Unlocking Bootloader Procedure:
          1. Download zip file (recovery file) of OFFICIAL MIUI China developer ROM for your device. Other ROM would not work. Then put it into phone storage. Go to Updater app, press the three dot on upper right corner, and select 'Choose update package'. Choose the zip file you just put in phone storage. The update will wipe all user data, please make backup beforehand.

        • @2be8: Absolutely! couldn't agree more.

        • @ebosh:

Ive tried every ROM available for it.
I dont believe there is a Chinese ROM for the "kate" version with band 28.
It should work with the Global dev rom according to others.

I havent done the unofficial unlock as it end up more work to flash ROMS back and forward.
Im already over it, the phone was just going to be a bit of fun as i already have others.
Im sure ill just sell it.

      • +1

4 years support. Just not android version support because they use custom ROM.

Xiaomi is known as Apple of China for a reason. Well, 2.

      • I've been running CM13 for my RMN3P and it amazing. As long as it's a popular device, there's going to be a solid community of some smart people porting over some awesome custom ROMS.

        • +1

Yeah, sounds like the RMN3P is a clear exception to what I've otherwise observed. If this one gets as much traction I'll probably end up buying one =)

    • +4

Google pixel is over priced. There is no doubt about that.

    • i can honestly say that there is little reason to ROM anymore. I used to be a ROM addict but in the last couple of years, every ROM/Kernel etc I've tried has always been worse than the original.

My son has a Mi4 running MIUI8 and it is awesome stock. My Nexus 6P and wifes Note 4 also awesome on stock.

I have tried various ROMS on all these phones and can't see anyone would bother anymore.

Back in the day of my Milestone/S3/X10/G2/etc etc you would always see a benefit, these days, i just cant see any compelling reason apart from freedom which of course is OK!

  • Wow, this is better price than aliexpress… impressive

    • +3

This is $20 higher than the Chinese retail price.

      • Yes and? We can't get it at that price unless you have connections or plan to go overseas

        • +11

Lol I'm trying to agree with you.

        • @Wonderfool:
Haha to me that sounded like you were quoting a cheaper price from China :p

          All good mate :)

  • +1

While I do agree the Pixel price is absurd, having the same hardware does not equate to having the same experience. Case in point, read the review at http://techtablets.com/2016/10/xiaomi-mi-5s-review-in-depth-….

    • +5

Yeah, but aside from camera quality, it's far from faulty. Xiaomi is still making one of the best non-amoled screen, one of the most intuitive ui for the average peeps (screw permission manager though) while still providing a whole range of options for customisation. It may still have a few bloat, but it still does constant updates, especially for the mi line.

They're great. I will put them above oppo and one plus any day. They're no htc or samsung, but they don't try to be, and their price reflects that.

    • +1

Yep, they still manage to have a crap camera. Made my Mi5 unbearable.

    • how bad is the camera compared to the samsung galaxy or iphone current models?

  • +1

    Any 5s+ codes?

  • Only white one available?

Hopefully they make a global version just like the Global version xiaomi note…

  • +1

No band 28 means useless for me. I'm on Aldi mobile 2hivh uses telstra band 28 for 4g

    • +5

You're not limited to just band 28 for 4g in Telstra. You guys have 4 different frequencies that accesses the 4g network.

Though I'm not sure if that's how it works for aldi. Maybe.

      • +5

I have Telechoice (also a Telstra reseller) and get plenty of 4G throughout Sydney and surrounds with no Band 28.
I wouldn't hesitate over that omission unless you know you have no 2100Mhz coverage (basically non-town centre rural)

      • You are right but problem is where I live it seems to be on band 28. Because I have a phone without band 28 reception almost zero with 4G bUT with band 28 I get full rceeption

    • +4

Useless is a bit harsh. I'm using a phone with Telstra 4g that has no band 28. I seem to be able to access ozbargain fine.

    • +3

I'm on Aldi as well. My Mi Max runs great. Only have 3G where I live and 4G at work is faultless. I definitely wouldn't worry about a lack of band 28 UNLESS it was the only band in the area you frequented.

      • Yes band 28 is the only one for me in my area

        • What town/city/suburb/area do you live? I am just curious as I live in a "remote" place and there are other bands available. Just curious to see what kinds of areas only have B28.

    • As someone who doesn't give a single toss about mobile internet, if a phone doesn't have band 28, can I still make calls and texts with an Aussie (Aldi) sim card? There's WiFi everywhere I stay for more than five minutes, TAFE, shops, home, friend's houses, etc. so I get by fine on Aldi's 30 bucks a year prepaid setup.

      • Only time you need band 28 is when you live in the middle of butt (profanity) nowhere. Like if you drive 20 minutes away from taree train station, yeah.

I lived with phones with 2 frequencies missing, forget band 28.

      • At this point in time you couldn't make a call on band 28 even if you wanted…

      • Youll be fine.. Been running with a OnePlus One for over a year and no issues not having Band28. Living outskirts of Sydney.

  • the silver models will be worth nothing soon, the bezel is f**king hideous if you've seen real images.. it's really a huge shame whoever designed the bezel to be that bad, cause the rest of the device looks so good

  • +2

This isn't an international version, which means the phone comes with all unpleasant Chinese apps and Google apps aren't pre-installed. Even worse, since this is a grey import, you have no local warranty and you would have to root it by yourself. $460 for essentially a DIY phone? I'd rather stay away from this phone until Xiaomi releases an international version of it.

    • +2

Agree with most likely not international version of ROM.

Not sure about local retailers selling international ROM version of Xiaomi devices (not easy to find, and they probably charge more). They all need to import these phones from China anyway. One of the retailers selling ones which have Chinese ROM and indicate that if you were to root the phone and install the international global ROM, then the warranty would be void.

At this price point, it starts to become a worry (lack of support and warranty), which is a shame because the phone is flagship quality.

      • If only the Axon7 doesn't cost 700AUD, we wouldn't have this problem.

        • That awkward moment when Axon7 is dearer than S7.

        • @motor89: where did you get it for that price? Snapdragon edition doesn't count.

        • @Wonderfool: Node no. 269476.

        • @motor89:

Not local stock, otherwise the axon 7 is only $600 or $550 for US version. But yeah, i get what you mean. Rather a htc or s7 at that price.

      • You can swap to international by downloading a file, dropping it on the phone and hitting go.
There is no unlocking for stock ROMs, Chinese or otherwise.
I'm also concerned that you think there is some amazing warranty on the international versions, one way or the other any warranty is going to be overseas.

Edit, sorry this was intended for the guy above you.

  • +1

I got a mi5, which I love, but I hated MIUI, so installed another ROM. Might be worth checking whether there are any available for the mi5s yet before buying this.

    • Even if there is, it'll be buggy as shit.

      • +1

Why? I've always had custom ROMs and most are good.

        • It just came out and kernel hasn't been released. There's some new hardware on this thing too.

  • -1

    I want buy a smartisan M1L and it has band 28 wow:D

  • +1

For someone who isn't very savvy can someone explain the significance of the whole band 28 thing that the post addresses? Is it tha tbig of an issue? Or is it a major band required for aus telco 4g speeds/connectivity?

    • Generally used in rural or regional areas. Im 300km from Perth and i have a Xiaomi Mi4c and notice a small difference. I will definitely go back to a phone with the 700mhz band so i can use the Telstra network to a much better extent.

      • thanks! Band 28 = the 700 mhZ, which is the new telstra band they're now running on these days, correct?

Short of not having the band 28 does it generally default to another band or 3G in rural/regional areas? Or would one just be left with no signal - both mobile reception and/or internet wise?

      • Am I correct that 700 MHz is important for those using Telstra 4G NEXT? Is it important for those who use Optus or Vodafone. I use Amaysim SIM card (Optus is the provider) and I have no idea if 700 MHz is a necessity. Can someone enlighten me please?

    mi 5s 3gb ram 64gb silver $392.62 AUD http://www.banggood.com/Xiaomi-Mi-5s-Mi5s-5_15-inch-Fingerpr…

I recommend changing shipping to priority direct which is ePacket for @2.97, which brings the total price to $395.59. This way the phone should arrive in 1-2 weeks rather than 2-5.

    • priority direct

Does it come with a tracking number?

    • +2

      Yeah….definitely,
I have Galaxy s7 edge, and still bought mi 5s with priority direct & shipping insurance…
Lets see how my investment will go?

      • Give us some update please!

    • Wish this was out yesterday. Knew I should have waited.

      • If you bought from banggood and your order has not shipped, you can cancel it from your order page or contact their support to cancel it.

        • Thanks, but got the ZUK2 & has shipped.

    • thank you. I think I'll get this one for my wife who's phone I destroyed.
Seems close enough to the galaxy S7 and half the price.

      • too late, 64GB version sold out.

        • +1

I just checked, you can still pre order the phone. Banggood says stock should arrive on the 31st of October.

        • @Pacbough:

Thank you. It seems they uppped the number for 64GB as there is now 509 + 1 ordered.

  • wow, it looks really good and cheap as well.

the comparison between this, google pixel and S7 is helpful

    • +2

The comparison says that S7 and Pixel are better than Mi5s, but whether you want to pay a premium for either one of them over Mi5s is debatable.

      • all have the same chipset and GPU, only S7 has better CPU when you take S7 edge.

Secondary Camera is not the best in Xiaomi Mi5s but has more micro pixels than those two.

        Xiaomi and Pixel has USB-c.

Quick Charge version 3.0 in Xiaomi, 83% in 30 minutes while 60% in 30 minutes for S7.

I am commenting this for my convenience as well.

        • QHD vs FHD, Better pixel density, f/1.7(lower is generally better for low light photography) with OIS vs f/2.0 without OIS, but with a dual LED, P68 certified - dust proof and water resistance vs No IP rating, SD Card Slot vs No Card Slot, Qi/PMA wireless charging vs no wireless charging, Gear VR vs Daydream VR vs Xiaomi VR.

        • Mi5s and Pixel both run a SD821 which is 10% faster than s7 edge SD820, unless you are talking about the Exynos 8890 S7 edge.

        • @senz:

The SD 821 on the Pixel runs as fast as the regular SD 820, but it uses the improvements in the production process to reduce power usage by ~5%

          http://www.xda-developers.com/a-look-at-what-has-changed-fro…

        • @StrayfireX:
"The Snapdragon 821 is engineered to deliver a 10% performance increase over the 820 with the Qualcomm Kryo quad-core CPU, reaching speeds up to 2.4GHz."

          https://www.qualcomm.com/news/snapdragon/2016/07/11/snapdrag…

        • @senz:

The key is "up to". The implementation of the SD 820 in the Pixel only clocks up to 2.15Ghz, same as the SD 820.

"The Pixel phones are the first devices we've seen that feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821. The original sales pitch for the Snapdragon 821 was that it was identical to the 820 but clocked a bit higher—2.4GHz instead of 2.15GHz. Now the Snapdragon 821 has arrived, but Google isn't running it at the maximum clock rate. Instead it's back to 2.15GHz, just like the Snapdragon 820. What gives?

The Pixel's 2.15GHz "Snapdragon 821" performs as well as the typical Snapdragon 820. We saw no benefit from the extra "+1" on the end of the model number, though perhaps that should be expected. The Snapdragon 821 has the same internal designation as the Snapdragon 820: "msm8996." Maybe Google got a higher-binned SoC from Qualcomm, but there's not much more to it than that."

          http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/10/google-pixel-review-b…

  • I had an issue with Banggood recently when I preordered a similar phone (the Black 128gb Ceramic Back edition Xiaomi MI5) with an ETA on stock of about 2 weeks, they held onto my money for a month before emailing me that the item was "sold out and is cleared from the stock" and gave me the option of paying an extra $45.50 for the same phone in the white version (with a significantly inferior glass back). They then refunded my money after some iffy correspondence.

I found this quite irresponsible on Banggood's part as they didn't limit the amount of pre-orders they received. They may have limited this sale to 500 orders but I would still take this with a grain of salt as there's no knowing that they'll get enough stock given my poor experience.

TL;DR: Pre-ordered similar phone, Banggood stopped selling the phone and offered me to pay extra for an inferior product.

EDIT: Aside from this, I have previously bought products from Banggood (non-preorder) and have had a good experience with them.

    • yeah…thats a bit unfortunate.
I have been using banggood from a while now and can say i prefer to pay a little over on banggood than buying from any other website.
Overall, I have had really good experience with them. However, I always prefer to have shipping insurance for my postage.
