Using Velocity points to buy electronics. Is this the best use of points?

Hey bargainers,

I've been looking at buying a pair of Bose QC35s and most places have them for around $450 now. I also travel internationally for work a bit so in the next couple of weeks I can get a TRS refund so it ends up being about $400 for a pair all up.

Currently I have about 55,000 Velocity Points and I can redeem those + $100 for a pair of QC35s from the Velocity store. I know everyone has different ideas about what is a better use of points. I don't really care about flight upgrades, and I haven't used my points for personal flights before anyway.

What does everyone think?

Since you have to put in $100, you're trying to work out whether 55,000 points = $300
Comparing to Gift cards, it looks like you lose out a bit.

You could buy $330 worth of Coles Gift Cards on the 18,000 points for $110 Special Offer and still have 1,000 points left over.
If you do or can easily shop at Coles, this would seem to be the better option.

Otherwise, the next best deal is the BP Fuel card 17,000 points for $100…
You could buy 3 of them, keep 3,000 points and get $300 value

The money you "save" by using Gift Cards instead of Cash you can then hold out for the best OzBargain cheapest place you can find for QC35s and then claim TRS. Eg this expired deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/271457

  • How much is the shipping? The headphones look really cool. The velocity price looks very competitive vs jb gift cards and price match. When booking hotels I normally get the Westfield vouchers and get flight centre to price match rather than buying hotel gift card or the velocity travel agent.

I know you've mentioned that you're not interested in flights, but just letting you know that 55,000 Velocity points plus around $80 in taxes is the magic number to redeem a one way business class fare on Singapore Airlines A380 or excellent 777-300ER product from SYD / MEL / ADL / BNE to Asia zone 1 - Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok etc. :)

How about 55,000 points sell to me $500 ?

Why is everyone wanting to buy my points. Have I missed something?

Well the Velocity store gives something like .7 of a cent per point value. Other people can get anywhere between 1-5c value per point from flight redemptions depending on how they use them. Your best option would be to sell the points for $550 (1c per point which seems to be the going rate) and then purchase the headphones and have some coin left over.

    • Because the velocity store is not the best use of points. In my case, 17800 points is a one way fare Brisbane to Perth, which is easily $200+, even more when you're looking at peak times.
