Why Are Pencils So Expensive in Australia?

I was looking for a bunch of cheap hexagonal pencils for some modular sculpture that I wanted to make which looks pretty cool and fun to make. youtube link to tutorial and the video links to the US Amazon store which has the 72 required pencils for approximate $11AUD from the staples store but unfortunately they don't ship to Australia. no biggie, I'll just buy them from the staples store in Australia.

Closest thing I could find was this which is $13 for 12 pencils. And I wasn't gonna drop $78 on pencils which should be around $11.

The buckets of pencils turn out to be the most economic pencils with the Staedtler 100 HB pencil bucket for around $30 but it doesn't come with the little rubber on the end which I would have enjoyed on my sculpture.

Would anyone know where in Sydney I might be able to find a more economic purchase of pencils for my project? Ideally I would have around 80 pencils. so 4 packs of 20 or 7 packs of 12. 100 is really pushing it for my pencil needs. unless you guys could suggest alternative fun uses for pencils like the modular sculpture I linked haha

tl;dr
72 cheap pencils please. any ideas on where to get them?

My first thought for cheap pencils would ebay or aliexpress. But I've got no further than 'that looks cool, I could totally make that' and probably never will haha.

    • ebay fixes every market inefficiencies except 'shipping costs'

It's hard to tell whether they are hexagonal or not. They could be round.

$2 stores, and places that sell cheap crap (like the Sam's Warehouse type) sell big plastic packets of yellow pencils, to make up for how crappy they are. Perfect for what you need them for. Although I know Sydney doesn't have the same love affair with $2 shops as Melbourne does, you might be able to find similar stores at an Asian heavy district

    They're free at IKEA

    • Thanks for the reminder, time to stock up again

Matter of opinion and comparative geography. Pencils are CHEAP here. Just shop around and stop being a CHEAP SKATE!

  • Target has 50 pencils for $10 in their catalogue. No idea what they are like part from being in a tin.
