Sony MDR-1000X NC Bluetooth Headphones $493 (+ $4.95 Shipping) @ JB Hi-Fi (RRP $699-Late 2016 Release Model)

340

These damn new headphones just got released in Sep 2016 and have better reviews than the Bose QC35's I own!! The cheapest on Amazon US is $398 USD. For a local stock, this is a bargain. Unfortunately, the website says its online only! But hey… for a brand new release, over $200 off is pretty good. I wish I got these instead of the Bose (Bit of a sony fanboy here)

Some of the reviews, if anyone is interested in knowing why they are worth the $$:

  • How much money can I make by selling my kidney?

    • Depends who you sell it to… Sell to a Chinese restaurant and you'll be lucky to get $10.

      • Damn, I am still out of 487.95$.

  • Keen to audition these. I wonder if they'll stock the Champagne coloured ones soon too

  • +1

For anyone sitting on the fence - believe the hype. I bought a pair of these from Accessory Jack a few weeks ago and they tick every single box solidly.
The price will be off-putting for some though.

    • Would you vote this over the QC35s?

      • +1

I've had both and would say that i prefer these. Better sound signature for my taste and some genuinely handy features that Bose don't offer. The only down side is that i feel they look a little bigger on the head and it can be difficult for people with small heads to get a great fit.

        • They defo look bigger.
The one thing that I've noticed is that the QC35's feel comfier, but that's subjective. The MDR 1000x's seem to hold on to your head tighter, which is good for cancellation. It's not uncomfortable, but I do notice it.

  • These have been getting rave reviews for their audio quality and NC but you have to wonder why it's been discounted so early on.

Either Sony is trying to compete with Bose's price point or they're trying to clear out the current product revision (lots of owners on head-fi have noted irritating creaking issues, some had even returned due to this).

Anyone here have any creaking issues on their Sony headphones (hear.on etc)?

I've got one from Amazon UK for around $420 AUD and these are truly amazing!

The sound quality is well better than the Bose even when you're using them passively (aka NC off). The noise cancelling is around the same as Bose's, but the advantages of the MDR 1000X are the features; you can turn of the NC, activate 'Voice Mode' (although it doesn't work well with guys voices), activate 'Ambient Mode' (amplify your surrounding noise), and quickly mute the NC and amplifies your surrounding by putting your hand over the right ear-cup (so you can talk to someone or cross the road safely without taking the headphones off). I will say I wasn't expecting to use the 'quick attention' feature that much, but it works really well when you need to quickly talk to someone or someone is asking you something. There is also a touch pad (located on the right ear-cup) where you can play/pause/skip songs, turn up/down volume and activate Google Now/Siri.

HOWEVER, the only downside to the MDR 1000X is the creaking noise on the left ear-cup. You can hear it slightly when turning your head (it's like the sound of tapping one of your fingernail on the table once), which is disappointing for the price. It seems to be an actual fault within the left ear-cup folding construction, and many have reported the same issue on Amazon and Head Fi. Not sure if they've fixed the problem with the Aussie stocks.

Other than that, the MDR 1000x is a really good NC headphones for that price + Aussie stock too!!

    • The creak sounds bad! From 2 min forward in this video .. what a shame https://youtu.be/35-NSMfOTBY

      • Mine is not that obvious. It looks like when he is talking, the mic is moving with his jaw making those extra creaking sounds

    • Hi Classical,

I am tempted with these so I did a lot of reading and the downsides I found are the following:
      - clamping force a bit high
      - ears tend to warm up faster than the Bose QC 35
      - ANC has a hissing sound

Could you comment on these ?

One more question, once it's plugged to a jac, the touch controls don't work anymore. Does it apply to the quick attention function ?
I"m just asking this because if you're on a flight, watching a movie and can't use this function, then it's a real downside
      THANKS!

      • Hey vbladev13,
        1) I can only feel the clamping force after 4 hrs of listening. It's still comfortable tho

        2) They do warm up faster than the Bose qc35, but not a lot.

3)In a really really quiet environment you can hear the NC. However, you have the ability to turn off NC if you are in a quiet area. In a nnormal/noisy environment you won't notice it.

        4) When using the jack, you can still use the quick attention feature and changing between voice/ambient mode. However, you won't be able to play/pause/skip song and turn up/down volume.

Hopefully that answered all your questions!

        • Thanks for the answer Classical!

I want to get them for travelling on long flights so I guess I won't be hearing the hissing ANC sound

Tempting to get….but so still a lot of cash….tempting!

        • @vbladev13: All good! If you're traveling overseas, you can claim $45.27 back making it only $452.68 (including shipping).

I guess you just have to try them on… I've tried the qc35, Momentum 2.0 wireless and MDR 100abn for 4hrs+ each. I didn't like how you can't turn off the NC on Qc35 and the sound quality isn't great. As for the Momentum 2.0 wireless, the sound quality is really good but the NC suck. The NC on the MDR 100abn is not bad with the ability to turn on/off NC, but I thought there was too much bass!

However, the MDR 1000x combines the excellent NC on the qc35, sound quality from the Momentum 2.0 wireless, features from the MDR 100abn + some extra features.

        • @Classical: Where can you try them btw? I went to many JB Hifi and they never have them out for testing. I would really like to test them to see how comfortable they are and see how is the hissing of the ANC

        • @Classical: Doesn't matter
Ordered a pair yesterday, I'm sure I can't go wrong with these

    • How is it compared to Senheiser PXC 550 & QC 35, Which one would you reccomend in term of overall rating

  • Thanks OP, just bought these last week from JB, at a very Non-OzBargain price! Will have to a price guarantee with ANZ. On a side note these are the first ANC/Bluetooth headphones that I've really enjoyed.

  • Another thing I would add to any potential buyers, these look big on your head (more so than the QC35) and if you have a small head you may struggle to get a really nice fit.

  • Anyone know if these headphones will connect with desktops and laptops with bluetooth?

    • +1

      Yes they will

  • Picked up a pair in store today, great headphones.. Really comfy and OMG the noise canceling is amazing. If you are thinking about it, pull the trigger! I was thinking all day and finally got them, and am so pleased I did!!!
I've also got the bose qc20, and these are honestly way better.

only thing holding me to buy is the stupid rrp 699. In US, it is only $50 more than QC35. Why it is AU$200 more in rrp? so the saving of $200 is questionable. If the rrp is 550~600 in AU then the $200 discount is more a bargain. Will wait for Xmas and hope to see a better discount here.

  • Just got the last one from the Sony store at Castle Hill. They were able to price beat JB. I got it for $470.

At the Sony online store if you are a member (free to join) they are only $419.97
    http://store.sony.com.au/MDR1000XB.html#srule=price-descendi…
Think you get free shipping on your first order too.

    • Shows up as 699.95 for me (logged in)

      • are you a sony x member? Im not sure if there are 2 different types of login.

        • Thanks is there a easy way to join Sony X? I had a look at their Facebook but I'm at a loss

        • @hubbske:
Thought you could just do it on the sony store website. I think there is a banner along the top to click on? I've had it a while and cant remember how I got on it.

        • @smoo: Thanks for helping looks like they're full atm on sign ups if anyone was wondering

  • Really on the fence about getting these or the QC35's. I want to pick up either these or the Bose before a flight in early December. That issue with the creaking of the left ear-cup sounds really off-putting to me and I think the Bose are more aesthetic. Also, not sure if these have a microphone for making calls etc? I think the Bose have that function, but not sure.

Any owners of these and or both able to comment any guidance?

    • 'creaking of the left ear-cup sounds really off-putting'
That's when you turn on the amplifier

'Also, not sure if these have a microphone for making calls etc?'
It have microphone, but it can't automatically switch to the phone when there's a call/nontification I reckon. I found it annoying from QC 35 sometimes

      • Thanks @rodinthink. I actually caved and took advantage of the offer at JB today. They didn't have any display models so I wasn't able to try them out, but I can always return them if need be.

        • Yes, buy firat return later =p

I got qc 35 and planning to buy this as well as I had quite a big head.

Sound and bass is better and they have practical button ANC cancel & Amplifier (switch is good unlike qc35, cheapies switch)

Tried to use UltimateKids Gift card 10% off for online purchase but I dont think I can make the purchase. T_T

        • @rodinthink: Haha, yep. I made sure that I was able to return them. I'm going to open them up in a bit and get them charging, and will have my first go of them later tonight. I'm hoping that they are as good as I've heard, and if you are looking at getting a pair after already having the 35's, they must be good!

        • @dalb0013:

I surprisingly got it instore and able to buy it at $493 from $699 (way overpriced compared to amazon $399 price), already test it. Here is my opinion:

          1/ Simultenaous Connection.
As I said before the things that Sony MDR 1000x lack of compared to qc 35 is when you want the dual connection/ switch to the other gadget.
I reckon 7 seconds to hold the button for bluetooth pairing is quite silly , should be shorten to 4 seconds not sure if Sony provide firmware for this Headphone to modify / customize it. Anyway I personally found the dual connection to be annoyance as it always interrupt me when I watch netflix, quite distracful. But if you usually had bunch of important call / message I will reccomend QC35 as SOny will make you so focus (Member the ANC?)

2/ Playing/pausing the music is not as responsive.
Another thing is to notice is that when you want to play and pause the audio. It's not as sensitive as advetised and you need to touch the specific area which I found quite annoying. Also note when you took the headphone off perhaps try not using your right hand. Its not a big deal, but if you do use your right hand, the touch sensitive pad will definetely make you accidentally skip or volume-change the music. But I feel the ease when I want to raise or change the music, the convience to of touch pad is definetely a must if you skip/volume-change the music.

Other than that Perhaps Sony win in ANC very slightly ,sound bass quality, practical Ambient voice button & ability to turn off the ANC (even though I dont see it useful as it only give 2 hours additional battery I reckon).

Just want to let you guys knows in advance, You can purchase this Sony MDR 1000X Headphone In-store (Ask the Manager not the salesman) with Ultimate Kids Gift Cards which is currently 10% off (tomorrow will be the last day)

For those who confuse between QC 35 and Sony MDR 1000x, [SOny is the obvious choice] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqjziP_MkL0), can't go wrong with it.

    • Can you shed some light on the ultimate gift cards? I'd be happy to pull the trigger on these today.
