Looking for a cheap smartphone 5" or more for the motherin law. wouldnt mind the optus locked ones as we can get it unlcked.
Are you aware of any good ones - usually at coles or qoolies in half price specials.

Mother in law deserves the best. I will sacrifice my loved smart phone for her… theb get a new one myself.
Buy a Microsoft Lumia 640.
Only $99 for the Optus locked ones at Kmart. Works great. Has big fat tiles on the front that are easy to press and call/SMS people with.
Does whatsapp work with the lumia 640?
Lumia 640 has updated to windows phone 10. It should be working unless whatsapp doesn't not support window phone anymore.

The Alcatel Pop 4 (Optus) from a deal posted here in July has proven to be a surprisingly capable thing.
Now there's the Alcatel Boost Dex 5" for $79. Specs look very similar to the Pop4.
Pop's way better with
- 25% more battery (2500mAh compared to 2000mAh)
- Better screen technology(IPS compared to FWVGA)
- optus compared to alcatel
- way cheaper($60 compared to $80)

Yes, I agree on the screen (480P) and battery, but
Optus v Alcatel? They're both made by Alcatel. The OzB deal for the Pop4 was at Target, as was the linked Dex.
Did you mean Optus v Boost? I just discovered Boost is part of Telstra btw.As for way cheaper, yes the Pop4 was $59 in July, but the current (regular) price is $119. Currently the Dex is $40 cheaper. Having looked closer at the spec, I'd prefer the Pop4 of these two. Even though it's dearer!
It's a shame OP needs 5" minimum, as there's a few 4" cheapies out there right now for 30-40 bucks.

Be aware most optus phones will give you poor reception on Telstra networks as almost always excludes 3G 850mhz. It will be even worse when 2G closes down in a month.
