Is HDR 4K TV for PC and PS4 Gaming? Advice

Good Afternoon fellow Ozbargainers.

Anyone used a TV for gaming and found it acceptable for gaming on PC?
I am going to put into * points to make this quicker

  • Wanted to upgrade Monitor for a while now - Have few years old 24 inch
  • Decided to wait until Monitors support HDR as want to upgrade to PS4 Pro
  • Bout to buy ps4 Pro but still no HDR monitors
  • use My ps4 on My monitor, switch between displays depending on what im using

So im wondering, is a Telly any where near as good as a monitor for gaming?
Refresh rate seems ok (100hz?) but what about response time, will it be rubbish? Anyone used any? Was thinking about maybe a 32 inch, and I litterally sit at a desk about half a metre from screen if that.

Any 4k TV available today will max out at 60fps using HDMI because that's the maximum bandwidth available with current HDMI technology - better stuff is around the corner but not available yet.

Having said that, I grabbed a 55" LCD a few months back to use as a desktop monitor, I was tossing up between multiple 27" screens or one big screen which I could partition. Just bear in mind, you'll need a pretty beefy video card to game in 4k (980ti+) and that anything you buy now won't be TRUE 4k, it's all upscale at the moment.

      Agree with Gronk.

I went through a similar dilemma about 2 years ago. 100hz refresh rate is misleading as there is interpolation between frames as I understand it, so real frame rate is limited to 59.9fps, and the rest of the frames are rendered via processor to make it appear smoother resulting in… TV input lag! Use the link below to compare your reaction time on a monitor vs. a TV and the results are significantly different. This matters for FPS shooters, if that's your bag. You gan set your TV to GAME MODE under picture options which lowers the input lag because of reduced post processing, but it will not be close to that of a monitor.

I wouldn't bother with anything less than 40". You are making some compromises with using TV to start with - but I could live with these if the picture size is enormous compared to a monitor. Once you get to $800 territory you can afford a decent budget gaming projector (eg. Optoma GT1080 from Amazon ) which will blow everything else away for size provided if it's practical for you to use one.

Buying a 32" TV to use as a monitor just seems crazy to me because why don't you just buy a cheap 30-34" monitor? It will be better for gaming even without expensive gaming monitor options like adaptive refresh.

  • TV's as PC monitors suck due to many many reasons. If you like I can expand. A simple reason is: it'll look shit, the 'gaps between pixels' are huge.

  • I think you guys are right, but I might take the plunge if I can fight the right 40" HDR 4k TV. Atleast until I upgrade my monitor.

Can anyone recommend and reasonably priced 4k 40" TV's with HDR?

    • 40inch is a bit small for couch gaming on console. I'd seriously re-think exactly what you want to do, because it's not making much sense.

      Hey mavis,

I just bought the 43" version of this (http://store.sony.com.au/KD49X8000D.html#start=1 ) for the exact reason. I pick up my PS4 Pro tomorrow but have been using it for two weeks on my PC (i7 4960X, Nvidia 1080) for some 4K gaming. The TV is perfect for gaming as it has very little (not noticeable) input lag. Here's the review (http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/sony/x800d )
The only issue is, I got mine from Sony with heavy discount due to my PS4 Pro preorder (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/271574 )
If I was paying full price it would be a bit different I guess, as I could have cross-shopped it with many other models.

I'm having no issues with the PC 4K gaming. And can drop by to provide comment on how it goes with my PS4 Pro in the next few days (I want to upgrade it to and SSD first).

  • Been using TVs as main display for computer and console gaming for years. Currently have a LG 65 inch 4K TV which supports 4:4:4 full chroma and HDMI 2.0. My 980 SLI can't keep up 60 fps through out, plus a lot of games don't support SLI.
