Getting a D-Brand Skin!

Hi all,

I've never seen the point in D-Brand skins. But I just saw my mate's Nexus 6P with a D-Brand skin and I loved the look.

I'm considering getting one for my DELL XPS 15 I just bought 5 minutes ago thanks to this deal.https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/276304

Any thoughts/recommmendations and suggestions?

Are they JUST a novelty item? Are they worth ~$25 for the laptop.

Do they often have sales or discounts? Are they difficult to install? (Video makes it look easy)

Any help appreciated.
Thanks

  • Before you buy, I'd ask if you trust yourself to install it…

I've played around with the skinomi skins for the nexus 7 when I had one… they're quite hard to install without stuffing up. Unless you can get it done for you or your friend is really good, I wouldn't recommend getting it. It is just a vanity item that may turn out horrible if not applied correctly.

  • This is what I know:

They're good at protecting against scratches (the main reason I got one)
They're not as easy to put on as demonstrated in their videos, but they're not too hard.
    Sales and discounts are rare.
They are sort of a novelty device, but help your device stand out from the crowd.
Whether they worth it or not is up to you. Personally I feel mine was worth as I don't need to use a case for my phone anymore.

    Hope that helps

  • I had one (I had to get it off because iPad mini version didn't have a hole for SIM tray).

I did like how they felt in my hand, I personally don't like metal finishes.
They are difficult to put on right, but you can kinda try again (to a degree) as long as you don't fold them or crease them.
They might be good for scratches but anything that cuts deep may leave marks on the skin (and probably on the device as well).

  • Never seen the point in buying an expensive status symbol that's designed to look good - and then covering it up with something that hides it.

Hence when I found Ringke cases I never went back. Ringke cases are clear TPU cases that fit well with cutouts precision engineering blah blah space technology etc.

Also cost about half the price of these covers.

    • no such cases though for the OPs Dell 15inch.

But I agree, I dont see the point of a sticker covering the item. For a phone , get a case, a sticker doesnt protect at all (and for me spoils the look)

      • +1

But matte white with Gold iPad Mini looks amazing. The sticker hides the antenna bit on the cellular iPads at least.

  • changed my mind, those skins look really good, so they are textured right?
I would find them impossible to install though. (was looking at the V20)

    • +1

They're textured. I have installed a couple of Dbrand skins on my Nexus 6P, and they're fairly straightforward to install! I'd rate it a 6/10 in terms of difficulty. For comparisons sake, I find them a easier to install than the traditional screen protector. I assume the installation process might be more tricky with something larger like a laptop though.

They do go on sale now and then. I think there was a 30% off sale just last week? Going through Ozbargain's history, there were 30% sale in November, September, June and March. So the trend seems to be every 2-3 months.

      • With traditional screen protector, they're relatively easy to install since they're see through though.

My experience with the skinomi skins was that I couldn't align it properly due to it being a solid colour.
