  • Can we change the DNS settings on this device to work on Hulu and Amazon prime? Or does it have to be through Router?

Cheaper at AliExpress. Just bought one for $73.99USD delivered (with $1 off coupon) https://m.aliexpress.com/item/32763245427.html#autostay

Plus 7% back with cashrewards (if they give it)

      "ships within 60 business days"

then add the shipping time on top of that

      likely 4-6 months……………………….

      • Mine said shipped within 5 days. Hmm. Maybe I got in just in time, guess I'll find out next week

  • Looks interesting but reviews are light on detail so far so I think I'll wait.

Biggest thing for me isn't 4k, but dts instead. I'm looking for something to to play Plex from that doesn't muffle the voice track with dts audio

    • +1

I'm not sure what I'm missing, but I run Kodi on a Nexus Player and get DTS out. I've got Plex as well but don't use it - I would have through it would be doing DTS too if configured for pass-through.

Would I for example have problems with DTS-HD?

      • Hmm, not sure, maybe its me that's missing something. Ill have another look over the weekend.

I'm the reverse, as I use Plex but don't use Kodi. I understood the problems with DTS to be an Android problem which is why I was surprised to see it here. Maybe it's not really a DTS problem Ive seen and just the way 7.1 is merged into my tvs stereo speakers

        • If you've got HDMI to TV, then Toslink (Optical S/PDIF) audio to AMP, then your TV is probably restricting the format to 2.0 PCM.

I think the only way to get the sound working properly is if your TV and AMP support HDMI Audio Return Channel (ARC):
          http://www.hdmi.org/manufacturer/hdmi_1_4/arc.aspx

Basically the HDMI cable from AMP->TV also has a reverse channel to send digital audio from the TV->AMP. So the theory is you can plug a media device into the TV using HDMI, but still get multi-channel sound on the AMP.

In my case, the TV supports ARC, but my AMP does not. So, I've got the Nexus Player plugged into to the AMP directly using HDMI, and the picture is then sent to the TV over HDMI.

This may be a problem if there are few HDMI ports on your AMP. Particularly so, if you've got an older AMP that doesn't have any HDMI ports…

BTW, There are adapters on eBay which take HDMI in and give separate HDMI/Toslink outputs. Apparently the audio output is taken from the HDMI ARC from the TV. Just search for "HDMI ARC Adapter", they're around $20.

I bought a nexus player last year and found the UI painful and a lack of local apps so I got a Roku 3. Love the Roku remote with the headphones I use it all the time, I still dont have the local apps thought.

Is there an Android TV app for Channels 7, 9, 10, SBS, iView and freeview? I sideloaded the some of these onto the nexus player but they just didn't work.

    • SBS has android app, with some exclusive web content too (last for few months?)

    • One app for all/most free play channels.
      https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=au.com.freevie…

      • Supposedly it's terrible and still forces you to open the other channels apps half the time as well…

        • +1

I have only used it a couple of times so may have issues BUT it shows whats on each channel and how far through each program is, that alone would be worth it on a tv box.

    • No kodi on Roku is there?

      • Don't know, I use Plex, Netflix, and sometimes Amazon Prime.

    • +1

What's so painful about the UI? It's the standard/official Android TV UI

      • +1

You're right it was the apps I sideloaded that were painful. I resorted to sideloading because it just didn't do what I wanted (and it still didn't help).

The App Choice for Android TV is still very limited 33 int total:

        Netflix
        UFC
Spotify Music - for Android TV
        The Economist Films
        ESPN
        Fox News
        Twitch
        TED TV
        Bloomberg TV+
        News360: Personalized News
        Pandora® Radio for TV
        CBS Sports
        Haystack TV: Daily News
        Kitchen Stories
SPB TV - Free Online TV
        Dailymotion
        Washington Post Video
        Red Bull TV
        USA TODAY
Vevo - Watch HD Music Videos
        MLB.TV
        Crunchyroll - Everything Anime
        Rai.tv
        KOLA
        Radioline: Radios and Podcasts
        CNET
        AlloCine
        DramaFever - Dramas & Movies
        Pluto TV
        Madefire Comics & Motion Books
        Rormix TV - Independent Music
        Kodi
        CineTrailer Cinema & Showtimes

It does have Google cast which helps but I have a Chromecast anyway.

The big plus with the Roku is the Private listening via the remote (or App on some models), there are thousands of apps but most are crap, most of the above apps would be covered (Apparently Kodi is not).

I previously had a HTPC but when my hardware died and MS dropped media center from Win 10 I changed up. Now I have a Panasonic PVR with Blu Ray,the Roku and Stream Chrome sessions from my laptop when I want to watch catch up TV. I still prefer the HTPC over what I have now.

There are a few more than that. That seems like a list from it's launch date.

The trick to sideloading apps is to make sure they re leanback launcher compatible. If you throw something on there that is meant to be used with a touch screen then it's not going to be fun.

There is an unofficial SBS and and unofficial iView app that you can sideload. Presto also have one which you can get through their site I think. There's an app called Puppetmaster tv which let's you make you own channels in a similar way to Roku. It has the BBC iPlayer and a few other good plugins as standard.

You can also watch live tv on it with the Live Channels app, if you have a HD Homerun or something running TV Headend - or if you just want to stream channels it will add them into the mix as well.

If anyone wants to get Amazon Video on there box, have a look at an app called TV App Repo.

        • @pete123:
Another option is to install TV Launcher and use that to access side loaded apps or use as main launcher. Leanback launcher does annoy me a bit, but I really like the live TV function that integrates live TV with streaming channels too.

  • not sure what CPU is this only have mali 450 GPU

the new nexbox has mali 820 GPU

    • +3

No difference at all unless you play games (and possible minor things like power usage).

And if you want a media player to play games on the (much higher priced) Nvidia Shield TV is a much sounder choice.

    • Another issue might be Netflix HD/4K might not work..not sure as I don't own a nexbox, but most Chinese android boxes have this issue.

  • Could also get a refurb Amazon fire TV from Amazon USA via a mail forwarder if you like….similar price

    • +2

You could but you'd be stuck with an Amazon Fire TV.

  • Is this better than a Nvidia Shield TV?

    • +1

Nope. It's not in the same class.

It's the sort of thing you'd be looking at if a new Nexus Player was released.

    • +1

nah the nvidia shield would stomp this but its also 6x the price.

you would compare this to a nexus player or roku or chromecast generally

    • Nvidia shield TV is the best Android TV box and this is not even close.

    grabbed one cheers OP

just for those wondering, yes the Aliexpress one is a few dollars cheaper and i was going to buy that but in the final purchase window it said shipping was upto 60 business days.

    thats nuts!!

so i grabbed this one instead

also one thing to note whilst you get free shipping on this one its worth it to upgrade the shipping/insurance as its only $3 and means you will get it in a couple of days rather than a month

    • But gearbest are notoriously slow as well. Might take 60 days too..although will admit my experience definitely haven't been that long..

  • Sigh. I ordered this from them as soon as they came back in stock and paid ~$125.

    • +1

Sorry for your sad story, but to cut to the chase, What is it like? I mean this player, not your over spending.

      • and further reading, i bought from geekbuying, not these guys. Seems my mind cut out after the g ;)

        Still waiting :(

  • dwaddled too long and missed the last deal on this .

so tempted to get this one … can anyone answer though - with apps like Netflicks that are going to run on this box, do we need to have a US netflicks account first for it to work?

  • +2

    Wifi only……pass.

    • Pretty sure you can use this with a $5 USB to Ethernet adapter?

      http://www.gearbest.com/tablet-pcs/pp_15035.html?currency=AU…

      • ya need gigabit 1000, that one is only 100mbps max. plus they suck, i've got one and it works sometimes.

        • Yeh I'm using a USB3.0 Hub + GigE Ethernet combo adapter via a OTG adapter. Initially it was a bit flaky, but after reseating the cables it's been bullet proof. It was just a cheapie off eBay too.

      • I did that with the Nexus Player and while it worked it wasnt the best. Cause then you just used up your one and only USB port. Id rather buy something like this instead.

        http://www.everbuying.net/product1208122.html

Cheaper and does the job even better.

  • I bought one from Walmart via Shipito. Netflix runs fine over the wifi as do a bunch of US and Australian Catch up like ABC, 7 Plus and SBS. The advantage of buying it from Walmart is the free offers ($75 worth) it ships with and US apps pre-loaded. Side loading others is relatively easy..

    • A bunch of complaints above about it not working with Australian catch up tv services. Were you able to get them working fine? I'll track them down if that's the case.

      • +1

Check out https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2447003 to get the sbs and iview app. Working fine for me.

      • +1

Yeh for some reason only TVs that come with AndroidTV built in (eg Sony), seem to come with the apps like Plus7, iView, TENplay etc.
Unfortunately these apps aren't available on the Play store (for AndroidTV) for some reason.
And I can't seem to find the APKs for them either.

But if you really want Aussie catch up TV… The work around is to use Kodi with the add-ons for Plus7, iView, TENplay etc.
The UI experience is not as pretty as the official apps, BUT the best thing is u can watch everything with NO ADS!

        • Thanks. I couldn't find the APKs, but am a big Kodi user, so I'll definitely check this out. Thanks!

        • Those aren't really apps. They are Freeview plus thingy made to look like apps. So there's no APK to take out.

        • +1

          @t3chshopper:
          No worries mate.
I sourced the Kodi add-ons from the repo linked here…
          http://kodi.wiki/view/Unofficial_add-on_repositories
Just search for the term "Australia"

I think there's other sources too, but I'm no Kodi expert.

  • Shame it doesn't have an ethernet port, it ticks every other box for me.

  • Does this player play media from a USB HDD fine?

  • try these coupons GBNEWNOV GBAFFNOV

  • Two new versions just came out.

    http://www.cnx-software.com/2016/11/17/xiaomi-introduces-mi-…

The Mi Box 3s seems very solid. It is still the chinese version though. I am sure it will be released in a US version soon enough.

    • But the specs on the box listed in OP and the specs listed for the MiBox3s look nearly the same?

  • No comparison to the Chromecast 4k?

  • Netflix in HD? Are you sure about that?

    • +1

Yep - AFAIK it is one of the few streaming boxes certified to play Netflix HD.

    • Definitely.
