Store rep any chance of offering a discount on n-acetylcysteine?

      • Do they even stock n-acetylcysteine?

    • +11

Wow that's a first. A neg for being too cheap.

First of all, we've limited it to 2 packs per person. And secondly, we've insisted that you come in and pick it up so a pharmacist is available for you to discuss the appropriateness of the medication.

You are aware that people can buy Paracetamol and Ibuprofen from supermarkets, that don't offer any quantity limits or any professional oversight, right?

      • -3

Thanks for responding. I don't intend this to be patronising, but I find it really commendable that you/the OP have a good range of bargains, and are willing to engage with polite, reasoned criticism.

Yes, I'm aware that supermarkets impose no controls over these kinds of purchases. Two things about that:
        * Supermarkets also don't offer them this cheaply. Even the cheapest private label paracetamol at Woolworths is 70c per 20pk. Supermarket customers would have to buy 10 packs, costing 9 times as much. They're not promoting bulk purchase.
        * You're a pharmacy. You have a responsibility to provide good guidance on medication, and promoting bulk purchase of over-the-counter medication — 25 times the max daily dose for less than $1 — is not responsible. Your pharmacist is not going to intervene if someone wants to buy 78c worth of paracetamol.

I'm on board that OzB shouldn't police the social or moral standards of bargains. Supermarkets don't particularly care about how unhealthily their customers consume their products, and price them accordingly. I think pharmacists are rightly among the most trusted members of the community, and their retail presence should accordingly be responsible about how they price medications.

As a pharmacist I'll intervene if I think a medication is inappropriate whether it is a 78c sale or otherwise. Not just due to some sense of civic duty, but rather because as a registered health professional and proprietor my name is on the door and I've accepted legal liability for medications sold within the shop.

If you have visited our store, you'd realise that we're a small business with a higher ratio of experienced staff covering the shop floor compared to other chemist franchises.

I understand where you're coming from in regards to pharmacists and pharmacies' duty of care, and the pricing of medications to discourage inappropriate use, but I think that horse bolted when Chemist Warehouse and other big box chemist discounters came to town. Not to mention the ready availability of medications like paracetamol/ibuprofen etc available in service stations, supermarkets and Aldi.

        • @HugoHugo:

The reality is pharmacy has been one of this country's most protected industries and many of Australia's pharmacies do not like any competition on price whatsoever. More often than not their arguments against competition are dressed up as concern for 'consumer welfare'.

        • @HugoHugo: Good on you Hugo — thanks for your reply.

Like I said, it's really great to get a range of bargains — especially so from small businesses. I get that Chemist Warehouse and similar pharmacy discounters place volume above customers' actual health, and that it's tough to compete with that. Their retail attitude to people's health is truly lamentable. I hope you agree.

And my criticism isn't directed at your capability as a pharmacist. I'm sorry to infer that you're bad at your job. That wasn't my intent.

You're also a retailer, though, and you must realise that price drives consumer behaviour — obviously you do, which is why you would advertise a (probable) loss leader to bring people in store.

It's just that the behaviour you're driving is the equivalent of someone buying 10 packs of the cheapest paracetamol from the supermarket at 1/9 of the price — behaviour that would seem odd to anyone. The fact that it's a pharmacy promoting it legitimises that kind of purchase behaviour, because you're implicitly trusted with people's health.

I hope your promotion does well; I'm glad you and your colleagues are looking out for your customers; and I hope you get people in store — I'm a big fan of small business.

What a lousy reason to neg. I'm sure if I had a Paracetamol adddiction the regular $2 price won't break the bank. Have you ever read the voting guidelines?

      • +1

Paracetamol is non-addictive (although some junk science websites suggest otherwise).

If you take too much, you don't get addicted, you get liver damage.

I think this pharmacy is part of shop small as well. Spend $20 get 10 amex cashback if you have not used them all up.

    • +1

Yes, we are. You'll need to come in and do it through the EFTPOS machine though. It doesn't work through PayPal.

  • Doesn't work for me. Expired?

    • Oops, sorry - I had to reset it again. It should work now.

      • Thanks works now!

  • I prefer real painkillers, oxy/vic/forte/panth

    No point doing things halfway.

  • +1

    omg a local ozbargain! :D
    i'll drop by later today…hehehe

  • Telfast 180mg 70tabs at Chemist Warehouse are $30 so they aren't much of a bargain. Cashback $5 the come down to $25

    • +1

Fair enough - the 70 pack is $0.35/tablet whereas our 50 pack (which isn't available from Chemist Warehouse) is $0.43/tablet. They also have 30 tablets for $17.99 which is $0.60 a tablet. So we're offering the halfway point along the pricing continuum.
Also their shipping is $8.95 whereas we're charging $5. :)

  • Just bought this for $4.50 from ebay :(

  • How do you feel about cheapening the pharmacy industry and not promoting OUM with "We have Panamax at $0.39 per pack"?

    Genuinely curious.

    • That's a bit of a narrow view. They aren't allowed to complete against the big box discounters?
