    1) You basically need IoT device to use this
    2) If you like me are curious how the hell it works, here is a demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28aUnKSJ_P8

    • +2

Thanks for the vid. Seems like a great pioneer device (like the Echo) but IMO is still a little cumbersome, laggy, slow to respond and the fact it can't act as a speakerphone, phone or even use VoIP is a real drawback for me.

Like smartphones of the past, it'll set the tone for faster more flexible and full featured devices of the future. At a price of over AUD$100 it's probably too much for me.

I love it. "cloudy with a chance of clouds". An interesting toy
but I suspect it will be similar to my experience with OK google. Ok google. OK GOOGLE. OOOH KAYY GOOOGLE! Sigh. Great idea/concept, but still too early. And not google bashing - Siri: I'm sorry I didn't quite catch that….

      • +1

It's better at OK google than my phone. But what its bad at is doing stuff, expect alot of "I'm sorry, I can't help with that yet" and my personal favourite "create reminder is not yet supported".

  • My calculations suggested it might be $167 with the exchange rate of B&H, but the lowest you are likely to find this side of Christmas.

Also consider the Amazon Echo Dot, which is better at the home automation side of things. Can be set up in this timezone, but full functionality would await Amazon finally launching in Oz.

  • Just went to the deal and its now $99USD… so around $133.78 Aust plus Post.
    cheers

    • Plus post…

    • Ops price is still correct with shipping.

      • Yes, but the Ops price is without shipping isnt it?
        cheers

        • it's with shipping (read POSTED)

        • @r0xz: don't know why people are negging you. OP said 'posted' in the title.

    Ordered. Oops…hehe

6 months of Youtube Red is a bit boring, but the fact that Youtube Red and Google Play Music are the same subscription makes it pretty good.

    • +1

Youtube Red has one killer feature that I love: No ads.

I don't watch any of the subscription only videos, I don't use the Youtube music app, I don't even really care about the ability to keep playing videos in the background/when the phone is off (though that's a nice thing to have). I do care lots about not having to sit through ads before watching videos. I'd pay a few dollars per month just for this, but to get it bundled with my music subscription is just wonderful.

  • So does youtube red mean google play or not?

    • +1

if you mean play music, yes

  • +1

Promotional offer is for new YouTube Red subscribers only. Current or prior subscribers to YouTube Red or Google Play Music are not eligible. Limit one offer per Google Home device.
Purchase a new Google Home and redeem the 6-month promotional offer by subscribing to YouTube Red via the Google Home app by 12/31/16.
Promotional offer requires enrollment in a YouTube Red subscription and provision of a valid payment method for continued service after the promotional period. To avoid being charged, you must cancel before the end of the six month period. After the six month period, YouTube Red will charge your payment method $9.99 each month plus applicable tax, on a recurring basis until you cancel via the My YouTube Red page.
This offer is only supported in locations where both Google Home and YouTube Red have launched, currently the United States.

Merry Christmas to me… and the OP!

I'm still waiting for my Dot ordered from these guys on the 16th October..

  • -4

To those that ordered this device, how would you feel if a group of unknown people placed a microphone in your house to provide some minor levels of assistance?

    • +13

How do you feel about that phone in your pocket?

    • +11

      puts on tinfoil hat

      • +8

proceeds to buy tinfoil through OzB

      • That's not really a valid comment any more considering the past three years of revelations regarding mass surveillance, but I see where you're coming from.

      • -1

Shame that you and so many others consider privacy a joke.

        • Did you not fill in the census as well?

    • I'd feel awesome about it. Why do you ask?

    • Currently I trust corporations more than governments.

      • Have you seen the recent Wikileaks about Google's relationship with the US gov?

      • Until the governments instruct the corporations to do their data collection. Just look at the UK now, as well as the US.

    • The US government can see you through you laptop webcam

At first I was super excited for this, then I realised my phone already has all of these capabilities. I'll wait for the next few versions.

    • +5

Darn it, I was getting all excited about finally taking the plunge (after passing on the Amazon Echo deal earlier)… but you make a great point. You've saved me $165, best bargain ever!

    • Not necessarily.

It has "Google Assistant" which is only available on the Pixel phones currently.
Google Assistant is supported in IFTTT, whilst Google Now is not.

  • Just bought. Thanks Op

Does this have regional limitations in Australia like the Amazon Echo?

  • Great price. I've got two Echo Dots though (as of this week) which WORK AMAZINGLY with my LIFX bulbs and Harmony Hub.

I do miss being able to use my Google Play Music subscription, not to mention that nifty cast-to-chromecast from Home feature. I guess that the trade off is having the Echo able to read my Kindle and Audible books to me.

So I'll probably wait this one out and see how well the Home takes off with all of the home automation gear.

    • My situation is identical to yours. My two Dots are en route. We have an Echo in the kitchen with lifx, wemo switches and harmony hub and it works well. I too wish it played nicely with our play music subscription but it's less of a priority than the automation features. I read an article where they interviewed an Amazon exec who said they'd bwelcome Google to integrate to Alexa but I can't see that happening any time soon. It's of limited use how it operates now unless you know exactly what you want to play, having tried using Spotify with it. I almost always went to the app to choose my music.

      • Right. I've got a tablet right by the Echo anyway that controls our music to our whole house audio (thank you Harvey Norman for those crazy cheap Pure Jongo speakers!)

Home automation/remote and kitchen timers and shopping list is by far a bigger priority for me, so I'm happy for now.

    • Does google control the harmony hub? That would be very handy.

    • How specific can the Echo get with LIFX? Kids have them in their rooms, dimmed down in their chosen colour at night.
Missus is complaining about having to use a phone to change them every night though, so would be great if she could just tell the Echo to set each light to its night scene individually when needed.

The Google Now commands for the LIFX are underwhelming, only seemed to be able to turn on/off all lights at once.

      • +1

Dimming is super easy - "dim my kitchen Lamp to 30‰".

I'm not sure how to do colours or scenes. A quick google search indicates that it's possible, but I don't have time to test it right now.

        • Seems at the moment colours are limited to the US natively, but can be done by using with Yonomi.

Good to know you can control individual lights though.

Another low quality product from Google that spies on everything it can about you to serve you ads.

    • +5

I for one welcome our new robot overlords.. Long live google

    • +2

What are the other low quality products? Their phones are good, Chromecast is good, VR is good. All their hardware seems pretty decent.

  • Just ordered that cheap android tv that was posted here the other day. Is there any integration between these 2 devices? E,g can I blurt out something like 'Play Rambo' and boom there it is?

I'm an iPhone guy, but Apple is feeling stagnant more and more….2 google devices in the home and maybe a pixel next?

    • What TV model? But short answer, if it support google cast then google home can control it.''

      • The Xiaomi Mi TV Box 3, has Android TV 6 on it apparently. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/277438

So if I have Plex or Kodi on the AndroidTV, will home all control of it? Also someone mentioned Amazon controls harmony hub, can google do that?

        • Yeah it runs Android TV from the looks of it. So it will only support casting, just like casting from a phone or chrome browser. Can't really control KODI or Plex yet though from the reviews, hopefully there will be an API soon

  • I'll wait till they bring out this but with a battery. Tempting though.

  • I have not received my echo dots from previous deals. It's been over a month. So I'm guessing it could take quite a while to ship.

Reminder: This is a half baked product, that may get better with time.

    Pros:
    - Good speaker
    - Plays (US/World) news
    - Plays most music
    - Can cast to Google Cast devices.

    Cons:
    - Some music is "not avaliable in your area", even though you can listen on Google Play Music on mobile/desktop, missing music is arbitrary.
    - An impossible set of steps required to play synced music to multiple Google Homes via voice. (And you can't select songs, or albums, only artists to play sync'd)
    - "Create reminder is not yet supported" (No calendar, reminders etc)
    - Can only Cast Youtube and Play Music.

    • Where did you find out about the 'cons' list? Particularly point one (music not available) and which music streaming service does it relate to?

      Interested as I've ordered one.

      Thanks.

      • Not sure what he's on about but it's wrong.

        https://support.google.com/googlehome/answer/7030379?hl=en

        • Australia based reviews I've seen for the Google Home do not highlight point 1 and 2 (which is why I am curious to hear, as they're very specific comments)… points 3 and 4 are not 'cons' for me, just the price you pay for being an early adopter.

For me this is the most interesting tech release in a long time.

        • +1

I have the device, most (95% of) songs are playable from Google Play Music.

But some albums aren't, it's very strange as you can play them from your phone or computer — but not the google home. I think it has something to do with the home accessing Google Play Music US.

I don't know if the same issue exists with spotify/pandora.

        • @lukemartinez: Thanks lukemartinez. Good to know. I use Google Play Music so will keep my eyes open for this issue. I wonder if it's the same in reverse, some albums are available in Google Play Music US and not AU.

I have a chromecast audio so will be playing around with multiroom support.

Overall you don't seem overly impressed with it.. is that the case?

        • @mooney:
I think it will get better with time, but it's not there yet. Not by a long shot.

Multiroom support is almost broken, especially with music. You can only cast Genres and Artists, not individual songs, playlists or albums. It'll get there though, eventually.

(I'm talking about multiple google homes multiroom support — not chromecasts. Not too sure about them)

        • @lukemartinez: Hi. Just want to let you know. I received my Google Home and had the same issue with Google Play Music, however I resolved it by changing my regional data on my iphone (I set my google home using iOS google home app) to USA and voila - now it works great.

        • @mooney:

Thanks for letting me know — i'll check it out, I appreciate it.

      • I've had the device, and two of them for a few weeks.

  • Looking at the deal at Best Buy plus fwd to ship to Australia. Total is the same about AU$160 - $170 delivered.
BUT delivery in US to forwarder is 3 Jan 2017, Then negotiate with forwarder exact delivery method and finally shipped to you.
I guess 2 month or so all up.
Decided to skip and hope it will be available in Australia with local guarantee for a reasonable price.

  • Back in stock but note B&H requires 2-4 weeks for them for the item to actually come into their warehouse. Not enough time for Christmas.

  • Mine shipped on 25th. How long does it normally take to get from bhp to Oz.

  • Showing as $205 shipped for me?

  • For anyone buying please note that the 6 month YouTube red offer does not appear if you activate the device in Australia. You'll only see the standard Australian chromecast offers.

I'm not sure if registering the device using a US based vpn will make any difference, but too difficult for me to attempt atm.
