can be up to 5 hours in transit at Auckland if flying Sydney to San Fran or longer like 7 hours if flying Sydney to LA.
Often the cheapest Air NZ fares are for worst connections & then they upsell for better connections.

Might want to make note that the Sydney flights can be done direct with United for the same price (as per IWTF link).
It's years since I flew with United. It's that bad, or at least it was. That's what happens when it's union owned airline.

Solid deal but just remember the flight will have a layover both ways in Auckland eg MEL-AKL-SFO. Layover times will vary and are around 2-4hrs.
