    Heart Rate monitoring..

    That's the whole reason you buy ones with HR sensors. The others are just estimates. These may not be 100% accurate, but they are consistent.

    They use your heart rate, and a few basics bits of info about you, age, sex height, weight etc and then measure your heart rate to calculate your energy (calorie) expenditure over the course of the day. They're not 100% accurate but will give you a reasonable idea of your energy expenditure.

    They don't work particularly well for high intensity sports and may lose track of your heart rate at times.
