Would You Look around before Spraying Your Windscreen Washer?

I find it annoying when the car in front of me spray while driving fast, which causes droplets on my windscreen.
Some droplets may be nothing, but if the car in front of you is trying to wash away those bird poop and you have your window lowered.
Then I learnt not to do so when I can see cars behind me.
Would you also care about those may be affected around you? Will you still push/pull the trigger when you have a convertible driving right next to you?

I do it when someone is driving too close behind me. Otherwise, I do what I can to avoid it - change lanes, wait etc.

If it gets on your car while you are driving (and not stopped) then you are following to close.

Don't think so. When you're driving and cleaning your windscreen while doing so, wouldn't physics means that the water flies further than usual? If people are following me too closely, I brake in an attempt to try and get them to leave a greater distance between my car and their car.

Also I hate people who do this (I cop this quite a lot). Wait until you're stationary!

    • On high way i leave 5 second gap and I still got their left behind.

What I did is drive faster than them and do the same and see what they feel.

  • Was in my mates car recently when this happened to him. He promptly overtook and returned the favour.

I do this intentionally to tailgaters. Annoys the hell out of them. Otherwise, I am respectful and only use it when no one is around.

    • I wouldn't have thought it could work over such a long distance — my car is about 4.8m long, plus the gap between us would have to be extremely close — perhaps in a traffic jam it would reach?
I will probably try using my rear window wipers if someone was tailgating from now on — that will send a very clean and clear message, perhaps put some cider vinegar into the tank for added effect…

      • It's surprising how far it does travel. It's not the jets themselves, but the splash that gets redirected off the wipers and windscreen. Tiny droplets that dry almost instantly on your windscreen, then you wipe and it smears, then you need to wash.

I had it happen a few days ago, not tailgating and in a 60 zone. I got so angry that I chased the other driver to their home and spat on … No, wait… It didn't matter at all and actually got me to wash my windscreen that was already a bit dirty.

      • The water drops aren't traveling to you… you are traveling into the water drops :)

An every day risk as i ride a motorbike. Only had it happen to me a handful of times though, just move on its not that big of an issue…

    • Yes I get it done to me - angry drivers that don't realise it's perfectly legal to lane filter at low speeds. Couldn't care at all, I get rained on regularly anyway!

…and you have your window lowered…

Didn't know they made cars with wind down windscreens!

      Maybe a Jeep Wrangler?

      • alright! you got me there! haha

  • it's a good way to say #$%* you to those lovely tailgaters

I wait until I am stationary. Unless my windscreen needs to be cleaned urgently and there is no one behind me. I hate it when people spray their windscreen when moving in traffic because the spray can travel a long way. And it only seems to happen when I have just washed my car!!!

  • One of the nozzles on my old car used to miss the windscreen completely and shoot the water right over the top of the car… I'm not that mean but I could have had a lot of fun on the freeway…

  • I wait till I come to a stop I don't do it when I am driving because it fumes me greatly if I am sprayed. I keep my car clean most of the time.

  • First world problem…

    • … because poor people don't drive cars, ergo in poorer countries everyone uses a horse and cart ?
