New 3DS Non-XL Hard To Find

Why are the non XL versions of the 3DS so hard to find? It's like the only ones left in stores are clearance. Have they stopped making them?

  • I think they are being phased out for Australia, as in existing stock is not being restocked when sold. Mightyape and Target no longer list it. EB are dumping the cover plates and no longer offer new onlne, just refurbished. JB still list some white and Animal Crossing stock. Amazon US just sold some black and white embossed for the first time last week, so maybe Nintendo worldwide are shifting unsold world stock there (after territory flashing)?

Oh bugger. I guess I'll robably get a a 2DS for children with small hands then

  • 3DS XL is widely popular because of the bigger screen. I'm guessing they sell a lot more than the smaller one. 2DS is better for your children's eyes anyway and presumably more durable - my partner accidentally dropped his 3DS on carpet the other day and it cracked so he can't close it now.

    • why better for the eyes, you can turn the 3d off.

This is my dilemma as well at the moment, buying one for my 6 year old for Christmas. But the 3DS-XL is the only one readily available. I would prefer to get him the standard 3DS over a 2DS, the 2DS looks a bit awkward and ugly lol. Are the games interchangeable to fit all units ?

All '3DS' games work on all 3DS/2DS variants. There are a couple of 'New 3DS' games that are for 'new' only, but only Xenoblade springs to mind.

I got my daughter a 2DS in the end. Seems pretty solid for a 5YO. I haven't tried it yet (It's her Christmas pressie) but from what I read the 2DS will play all 3DS games as well as DS games. Just trying to find a cheap source of games now.

    • Thanks, I think this might be a good intro to using this sort of thing

For cheap games just go round to all the pawn shops or sometimes you can get things for cheap on eBay.

    • All 3DS games except those marked as "New 3DS" only which is only limited to a few titles if at all right now.

Either way the 2DS is a solid device as a gift without having to break the bank.

      • As far as I know, the only New3DS exclusive game is Xenoblade Chronicles, but the c-stick makes games like Majora's Mask and Monster Hunter more comfortable to play. Also heard the 3D is better because it tracks your eyes. But in the long run, OP probably made the right choice because in the long run, the 3D feature is not the reason most people buy a 3DS.

I bought my n3ds (non-XL) from this deal. It is available nationwide and there were plenty of stock from the target I got mine from (Canberra, ACT)

    • Thanks - I am going to see if this is still going at my local Target.
