5 weeks in Europe

Hi everyone,

decided we will go to Europe in middle school holidays next year. Wife's a teacher, so dates are pretty set. Looking to fly out early Sunday the 2nd of July and prbably land in London. Then eventually making our way down to Rome to fly out on the 4th August.

Currently seeing Emirates for around $2000 return each. I won't fly Air India, China Eastern, China Southern, Malaysia Airlines or Vietnam.

Anyone have pointers on who to fly, and the potential itinerary we could do over there. Maybe even sneaking in a quick trip to Spain.

Thanks.

I am English and it kills me that Aussies only ever go to London when in England. There are some beautiful cities in the north of England dripping with history and culture. Liverpool is my favorite city, then you should check out the Lake District for some of the most beautiful countryside on Earth.

I'm not spending all this time in London, I am just flying into there.

KLM (2 stops partly operated by Etihad)
    MEL>LHR
    FCO>MEL
    ~$1600

I've just seen this, great price. Looking at booking it now!

      • Not sure how long you can do a stop over for by Amsterdam (one of the stops) is an awesome city and well worth a visit. I'd try squeeze in a stop over for a couple of days. It might now cost any more.

        • We may even just land there and spend a a few nights, then go to London.

Not sure what their pricing will be in peak but should be similar to emirates, but have a look at Qatar as they fly out of Rome. MEL>DOH>LHR and then FCO>DOH>MEL is doable on Qatar with only 1 stop each way.

LHR is always the most expensive due to taxes. Choose other options and use budget airlines to get around (or trains).

do not miss Barcelona, an amazing place to visit

    Itinerary:

    London -> Chunnel to Paris
Paris for a bit -> rent a car drive south to Montpelier, drop car there
    Get train to Barcelona
Fly to Italy (Milan?) and catch trains to Florence and end in Rome

  • I flew with Cathay Pacific Syd>Amsterdam return late May/early July this year for $1800. You can stop over in Hong Kong for no extra cost, which is nice, breaks up the flight and HK is fun! Cathay also flies out of Rome, Milan, Madrid. Excellent airline, comfortable flights. Open jaw flight the way to go!

  • One thing for sure is that your travel, food and accommodation will be much cheaper than here in oz.

    • Eating out is more expensive (though not so much these days), and groceries are cheaper. But yes, Oz is now roughly on par with Europe, and the cities like Sydney and Melbourne rank high on the expensive cities list.

      • Wondering what the Euro and Pound will be doing in 7 months. Hope we'll time this all well.

What should I budget per day? Hotel for around $150 a night reasonable?

        • Yeah you should be able to find decent places for that, and this more likely outside big cities.

  • Its our favourite time to travel - This year we flew Thai Airlines into Rome from Bne $1140, cruised around Italy, Turkey and Greece for 11 nights with Celebrity for $ 1600 each which included all meals, drinks and gratuities, we used a low cost airline to fly to Gatwick (Vuelling AIrlines) they code share their flights with BA. Cheap to use the train to get around the uk when booked in advance, then flew back via Thai and had 3 days in Patong.

Use sky scanners to source flights including internal flights, just remember you will have luggage restrictions and you will have to pay a little extra to carry more bags, lock the internal flights in early to get the best savings. Our dollar is still high so you are getting more for your money.

Once I had sorted everything out i went to my local Flight Centre to match the price of the cruise and flights and booked it all through them.

Happy to help if you want more info?
