I just got one last week and saved abit of money already. No annual fee and earn a point per dollar spent. Recommend Amex Essential. If you apply via referral you get $75 cash after $750 spent within 2 months and your referrer will get 10k points. And no you can't get debit card.

It's credit card, not debit card. American Express "Essential" has no annual fee so if you are not a big user of AmEx then this might be an option. Less points per spend, but you still has access to the offers. Use American Express referral wiki to sign up to get referral bonus.

I got a AMEX Discovery card since 2011 and got myself a AMEX Essential in the past month. They both have no annual fee and they both have many offers. I referred friends to both cards and earned bonus points & cash. Have been saving a lot for the past few years.

AMEX Essential as others have recommended is probably a good starter card. However, depending on your situation, you maybe should consider a card with an annual fee. Depending on which card you pick, the annual fee may indeed be worth it.

The standout card right now is the AMEX Explorer which gives you 100k (110k with referral) Membership Rewards Gateway points (equivalent to 75k points with a lot of the Frequent Flyer programs - or almost 10x SYD-MEL one-ways excluding taxes).

The card has an annual fee of $395 but comes with a pretty versatile $400 travel credit which you can use on car hire, hotels, flights through AMEX travel (book online or over the phone). You could even use this credit to book something for someone else and just get them to pay you back the cash (if you wish to recoup the annual fee).

You earn a really solid 2pts/$ on everything except utilities/telco/govt.

Free travel insurance, smartphone screen insurance, and (I believe) 4 free supplementary cards (that's how many you generally get on AMEX issued AMEX cards).

The main stumbling block may be a minimum salary of 65k annual.

    • I think with the explorer card, you can also earn 2 points on utilities and telco. only 0.5 point for government.

  • Several people have been asking this question lately, and my recent comment is here. It gives you a link to all Amex offerings, so you can select and narrow down the features that suit you. And some info about the 3 free cards - since free cards are what I have and know something about. Hope it helps.
