'Some gaming every now and then' can you describe the games you want to play?

A gaming-ready laptop is around $1k to $1.4K, which gets you either an i5 or i7 + Geforce GTX 960M.

    e.g ASUS GL552VW http://www.warehouse1.com.au/epages/shop.sf/en_AU/?ObjectPat…

The prices then curves very sharply upwards if you want somthing better. GTX 970M for $1.8K but at that point you're better off getting a laptop with a GTX 1060 (cost $2k) as it's so much faster.

There are also laptops with the weaker DirectX 12-ready Geforce 940MX, e.g MSI CX62, this'll set you back $1099.

  • Following with interest.

I am also looking for a laptop around 1-1.5k. Maybe a little more, if it is really exceptional. I'd love something as slim as the new Macbook Pro and with plenty of power and storage, with a FHD or UHD screen if possible.

    • Your budget is a little low, but the Dell XPS 13 might be a good start.

Previously went on sale for $1234 for a basic Core i3 version.

The core i7 version retails up to $1.8k

The QHD + touch variant retails for a whopping $2.5k, which some lucky Ozbargainers got as a free upgrade when they bought the Core i3 variant.

The performance of the XPS can be extended by adding in a Thunderbolt-based external graphics card.
