Worth Buying The Samsung Galaxy S7?

My mate has a brand new Galaxy S7 32GB which he is selling for $650. When I say brand new I mean completely brand new, still sealed and comes with receipt. Is it still worth buying?

EDIT: To add some context. My friend had a Note 7 and then the whole exploding thing happened and he returned it and got a S7 from them brand new, however, he bought an iPhone 7 so he is selling the S7.

  • If you need a phone, yes.

    • My phone right now is the Redmi Note 3 pro. I bought it because I didn't really have money at the time but now I'm working a lot and money is coming in (was a broke uni student) I feel like I can easily afford to buy it. Lets say if I didn't need a phone would you tell me to wait for the s8?

      • +2

Well if you want it and the money, then get it. It's a good deal.

I've got one. Great phone, but end of the day it's just a phone.

If you don't need a new phone, then, it's a waste of money.

        • I'm probably gonna go pick it up. Really feel like I need a new phone tbh. This camera is just trash on the redmi and a lot of my time on my phone before was using the camera and social media so this inhibits that quite significantly.

        • @Ehx: Yes obviously you need a new phone what with posting slightly lower quality images to social media than you otherwise would.

        • @Diji1: Slightly lower? Alright mate. If you wanna act sarcastic and be no help at all to anyone gtfo.

        • @Ehx: You asked, I supplied, you didn't like it.

        • @Diji1: You didn't supply anything. You're annoying. There are a multitude of reasons why the S7 is way better than the crappy phone I have at the moment and just because I didn't write a wall of text explaining why every feature is useful to me doesn't mean you should be an ahole.

EDIT: Also, I'm not putting down the Redmi Note 3 at all. It's an awesome phone for a cheap price there are just so many features on the S7 and newer phones that are better.

  • Aus stock?

Also be on the understanding that if there is anything wrong with the phone you bought it, and your friend is no longer responsible.

    • +1

Yes, Australian Stock. The guy got it from Samsung after his Note 7 shit the bed.

Well it has 2 years Samsung Warranty so even if anything goes wrong it's covered, unless I (profanity) it up somehow.

I would say "No" stick with your Xiaomi for now.

While the S7 may feel so much better initially… all of those improvements will feel less significant once you've used the phone for a good 2-3 weeks. So hold on to your $650 for now.

The other reason is that the Galaxy S8 and Note 8 reveal is happening in 2 months.
That means you could potentially have the S8 or the Note 8 within 3 months from now.
So within 6 weeks the price of S7's will drop down to around the $600 mark anyway… so your deal isn't as great as you may think.

Now I'm not telling you to get the S8 or Note 8 instead.
I'm just saying the timing is bad. And you have a pretty good phone as well.
So there might be better handsets out that's also cheaper like a OnePlus 4, or a Xiaomi Mi 6, or a Meizu Bezelless phone.
And don't forget the yearly technological improvements that are about to arrive aka the Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD 835 will be released in that time, as well as the Nintendo Switch.

So you might even decide to get a mid-range smartphone and get a Nintendo Switch instead.
That Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro is not going to be obsolete anytime soon.

        • +1

A good camera, better screen and a faster/more responsive phone wouldn't feel as good in 3 weeks time? I disagree.

I could potentially have the s8 but I would also have to fork out about 500 more for it. Not preferable to be honest. Also, waiting 3 months just to get the S7 at 600? I don't think that is a good use of my time, as in I feel like $50 bucks is so miniscule at that point for the amount of time youre waiting just to get a deal from a shop for a cheaper price.

One plus and the other phones listed are better than the S7? From what I can gather that isn't the case. J respect you coming out and giving me a detailed answer and opening some options for me with the mid range phones but I feel like the timing/wait argument is an endless loop when it comes to phones. There will always be the argument to wait and wait and wait for the next iteration. Frankly, the improvements for waitingand waiting and shelling out much more money in the end doesn't seem worth it.

        • @Ehx:
Sorry it was meant to be "better handsets out OR that's also cheaper".

Like I've said, and other's have said… the S7 deal you're friend is giving you isn't that great.
There have been similar deals to it, but those deals are better than your friends. Why?
Because they were EARLIER, so the S7 was more Relevant.
The S7 is no longer a super-untouchable-high-end smartphone anymore, not by a longshot.

The camera's are passable on the Xiaomi, but they aren't great.
That's the one area where you will see the biggest improvement.
As for the display, the Xiaomi is better than passable so the quality discrepancy between the S7 isn't as noticeable.
A similar case to be made about the QSD 650 and the QSD 820.

          So what I really think?
I think the Xiaomi is a very capable phone. So much so that the "upgrade" to the S7 won't feel as big as it used to be between the high-end and the mid-range smartphones of yesteryear.

And with that case, I would say upgrading now would be a bad time.
Just stick to your Good Phone (and money) for a little while.
And within 3 months you will see big upgrades coming from most Android OEMs including Samsung.
I'm not making the argument wait something better is coming in an endless loop.
No, I'm saying if you're buying technology you should buy it when it is FRESH.

Ask me if you should buy a brand new Wii U, with extra controllers, accessories, and a dozen games.
          "No". Would be my answer.
Ask me the same thing but insert PS4 Pro instead.
"Yes, go ahead" would be my answer.

No point getting an iPhone 6 Plus (>$1,000) on 10th September 2015.
Wait a bit more, get the 6S model instead.

Also pointless getting an Nvidia GTX 980 Ti (>$1,000) on 4th May 2016.
Wait a bit more, get the GTX 1070 instead.

It's always easy to spend money, but its never as easy to save up.
If you be wise if your dollaroos, they will take you further.
This is coming from a stingy ozbargainer.

        • @Kangal:

Just another question because it seems like you are pretty level headed when it comes to this stuff haha.

Got another offer. Brand new s7, 64gb micro SD comes with and a aftermarket case for $600.

          Still in box

        • @Ehx:

Sounds like a good deal, for now.
It's not like as soon as the S8 comes, that all the S7's stop working or something.

However, I do expect the S7 to drop in price to $500-$650 after March 2017.
But if the S8 is the same $1,000 price and only a incremental upgrade, value wise, the S7 might be the way to go. So if the Xiaomi Note 3 is bugging you that much, I'd say go for it.

I mean, I'm using my Nexus 5X and loving it.
Sure the screen, is dull, has a glass gap, is too bright at night, and only 1080p.
          Only 70% screen/bezel ratio. A chunky 8mm thickness. And a slim 2,700mAh battery.
While the internal storage is only 32GB without microSD. Let's not forget the lack of OIS.
And the 2GB RAM QSD 808 SoC is anaemic and slower than mid-range QSD 653 SoCs.
….so your current phone would be a slight upgrade for me.
….however, I've grown to resist the temptation of a Nexus 6P, S7, Note 7, Pixel XL and iPhone 6S Plus.

        • @Kangal:

My xiaomi is having a bunch of issues atm. Screen bugs out and I have to reboot, constant network disconnects and has trouble sending texts and receiving calls sometimes. Screen bugs out randomly and flashes lmao.

        • @Ehx:
If that's the case, I'd say pull the trigger on the S7.
The microSD and case are virtually worthless.
So a Brand New S7 with 64GB internal storage for $600…. good buy.

I would like to recommend the OnePlus 3 (64GB) and OnePlus 3T (128GB)…
However those are difficult to get in Australia and they lack some 4G radio bands we use.
But if that wasn't an issue, and you opted to get one, you'll realise they go for the same price.
So basically an S7 is a good buy in comparison.

Just be careful with the S7 as its VERY fragile, slippery…. and none of the screen protectors and cases fits well around them due to its slippery, curvy shape.

        • @Kangal:
The Spigen Armor case fits well, has no chance of coming off by accident and has more than enough lip to be able to place the phone face down with no fear of any scratches. Had one on my old M8 and it was fantastic, so much so I got the S7 version.

  • Can't comment on the price as I'm not the best at picking out what the bargain is right now but I love my S7 edge, it came with a bit of bloat, and you can't change the rom to any stock or AOSP easily (or as well as say a nexus) so if you're the type to change those things you may feel a bit sad.

But I love everything else, so much so that it didn't even end up being a deal breaker for me.

As JB1 says though, it is just a phone, theres only so much it can do, and as you can imagine pretty much a better one comes out every x months. Still though I feel the S7 is good enough to be in the premium tier for a while yet.

Also useful that its so popular so most apps and games have little problem with compatibility.

    • Flashing the rom is still feasible. It's been a long time since I first did mine but I wouldn't advise against it.

      • Oh really? Do you have any links of an AOSP rom for it? I can find a few with touchwiz (basically similar s7 roms), but not stock AOSP. No idea if I'm just not searching properly, but couldn't even find one on cyanogen haha.

        Would much appreciate it!

the new one is coming in like 3 months.

the price here, 650 is only $50 or $36 less than new from a shop.
So this would be doing your friend a favour.

I don't think Aus stock makes a difference, they're from the same factory.

    • +1

Where can you get a S7 for 36 dollars more from a shop?

        • +2

"From HK". Would rather not deal with that. I need the phone sooner rather than later and if something happened mid-way of shipping that would be a mission to sort out.

        • yeah, but it was just the 'where'

        • +1

          @snook: Fair point.

  • Galaxy S7 is an alright phone. Unless you are thinking about getting something newer (next year and next year's models are really close), you could do worse than Galaxy S7.

That said, the price is… eh. I wouldn't call it an amazing bargain. Mobileciti did $699 recently. The price will probably go down further as time passes. I'd assume it'd go down to that or maybe little bit more on Boxing Day sales? Just speculating.

Judging from what I've been hearing about S8 (rumours, so they might've been completely wrong), they were looking at better camera (which kinda goes without saying with newer model it seems) and bigger screen to body ratio (90%+). If that interests you (and if you are willing to pay the extra), that might be a better choice. Though at that point, your option becomes much bigger, as it'd approach the price range of Pixel and other phones.

    • The price is the main reason I'm considering the phone. Would not really be interested in dropping another 500 for camera improvements (the s7 already has an amazing camera) and a bigger screen. There are probably going to be more features but I think a plateau has been hit with the current state of mobile phones.

      • Next year's model probably would be an "overhaul" model, given how S7 was kinda like a S6 with beefier battery and water resistance, hence why I was asking whether you wanted a new model. I am not a camera person, so I can't comment on the camera quality much.

As I said, I don't think $650 is a great bargain, I wouldn't be surprised if you find a shop selling the phone at similar price soon (especially since Christmas/Boxing Day is coming up). Plus the price would only go down from here, since S8 is on the horizon. Eh, $650 is at the upper end of the price range I'd probably be happy to pay at current stage, though part of me would probably want to wait longer for a better bargain.

  • +1

right now yes it's a good price not great but good.

end of September i paid $680 for brand new sealed Galaxy s7

the phone itself is great only one other mobile id get over this if i had the money which is the google Pixel XL but thats like $1300 lol

  • Don't bother buying the s7

The amoled screens die after 6 months

Google purple screen fault, numerous times and samsung / dealers blame "water damage"

  • S7 and i7 are exactly the same phone anyway!

  • Excellent phone. However, prices might fall quite a bit when they release the 8 shortly.
