Have you tasted a good kebab lately?

Sorry in advance if kebab is not your cup of tea.

Remember 20+ years ago I tasted the first kebab in life in Australia, it was wonderful.

Recently I have been tasting bad to worse kebabs, to the point I stop eating any meat kebab and only have falafel roll if I must have one.

Many chicken kebabs would have actually 80% chicken skin 20% meat as I estimate.
I don't eat Beef/Doner Kebab often as I couldn't tell what is in those minced meat.

Besides lectuces, tomatoes and onions, everything else seems to be extra - homus + tabouli.

Not sure if it is just my luck. When and where did you last taste a great kebab?

Kebabs should only be consumed between 3am and 5am.

    There's your problem.

Your in Melbourn… Get a souvlaki or get out… ;) they are stripped marinated meat, so your all set.

If you get sick trying to find, put an onion through a food processor till smooth add lamb herbs praprika, lemon rind and some juice, white wine, salt and pepper to thinly sliced lamb, marinade 2-3 hours or over night.

Taziki: Greek yogurt, grate a cucumber and squeeze excess moisture out, fresh garlic. Mix, salt pepper I usualy add also.

I haven't eaten a kebab in Australia in years. But I have great memories as well. The only bad ones were from major franchises.

I'm completely with you regarding so-called "extras". The reason I love(d) Australian kebabs is because the places I used to go to gave you all the salads and sauces - humus, tahini, tabouli, garlic sauce etc. I don't even care about the rodents, hair and sawdust. If you couldn't taste the kebab the next morning after brushing your teeth you didn't have a real kebab.

In Europe what they call a kebab I call a meat and salad sandwich.

Same here too mate I remember when kebabs used to be perfect now they either too big or too dry or no flavour it's not like pork rolls that imho have stayed the same over the past 16 years.

As a side note if you want a really good Lebanese bread and cheese meal go to either yagoona or revesby for a cheese meat or labneh with jabneh. I am sure they serve it elsewhere but it is basically just cheese and meat with lemon and chilli drizzled sauce wrapped in a small pizza bread. Very nice and imo better than a kebab in terms of heaviness and consumability.

To me it's the Lebanese version of a pork roll.. not too big and intense or expensive as a kebab but also not too small like a tiny cheeseburger.

They go for around $5-7 dollars kind of like a pork roll these days.. great daytime meal up there with gozlemes

I only go for kebabs made by Turkish peeps.

Best ones I've had have been on Main St, Blacktown (there are a few but one is the real deal)… and one in Wiley Park opposite the train station on King Georges Rd. Dem Turks know how to make a good kebab.

I always ask for cabbage to be added. It's red cabbage, pickled and shredded. Chili and garlic sauce as well.

The chicken at Wiley is juicy. Prefer it to the beef but both are delicious. Their hot chips are rather mindblowing too. So crisp.

Had some bad ones too. One from a food court which came out resembling more of a spring roll than a fat kebab full of goodness. It was light in weight, loosely packed, sad, didn't have that crisp bread from the sandwich press, and the flavours were all wrong. The pickled cabbage they added was also clearly out of a jar - not home made. Horrible.

    • In Australia I only go for the non-authentic-Turkish Shawarma-style kebabs made by Turkish peeps :)

Since Shawarma toppings are Levantine in origin you'd have to go to Lebanese, Syrian and Israeli restaurants outside Australia for my kind of kebab (tabouli, tahini, humus etc), since unfortunately gyros and doners are more "authentic" abroad (i.e. boring).

  • Ararat in Broadway Fair at The University of Westwrn Austrlaia definitely has the most amazing kebabs probably in all of Australia! The brrad that they use for the wrap is just delicious.

  • Most kebabs are shit these days, i look for yeeros instead or get pides.

I find the kebabs i have depend on the area.
Find an area with a large turkish population and you're sweet.
In Melbourne the best Kebabs can be had from Roxburgh Park, Glenroy & Broadmeadows.

If you want a proper chicken kebab go for chicken shish - rather than rotisserie (shawarma).
If the bread is not on pide bread and on 'lebanese' bread you're going to have a bad time.

Flemington Kebab House on Racecourse Road is my local. They serve up pieces of real lamb fillet and not that doner kebab mince.

The ladies out the back make the Turkish pide each day on the premises.

    • sounds delicious.
great to know some shops do serve great kebab.

    • i've seen that place always packed. I've never had a chance to try it.
      Next time i will.

      • Mate you gotta try it. I'm heading there now… :D
