Castrol Edge 5W30, $29.99 @ Repco (Starts 15/12)

230

For those who need 5w30 instead of the 10W30 the other place is selling, Repco will have 5W30 Castrol Edge from tomorrow for $29.99, apparently you save $44. The only thing for sure is youre spending just under $30, but whatever.

Its $5 dearer than the other place but thats the wrong oil, I couldnt find the right oil cheaper currently :D

  • Anybody know how Castrol Edge compares to Penrite HPR5?

    • +1

I feel penrite is better with my engine

  • Man what happened to the $15 oil deals - bring back the gulf western bargains!

    • +2

… this is full synthetic Barbie doll wee wee. Apparently it makes all your killerwasps extra slippery.

      • They used to do the gulf western Synx3000 between $15-$20 for a 10w-40, was decent value.

Hard to find a 10w-40 in a semi synth around the $20 mark on special these days.

Almost all of the "cheaper" oils are made from crude oil unless you buying a Group IV or V oil

Can this be price match with SCA?

    • Do SCA price match? Its openly priced so if they do, cant see why not.

      • +2

I've price matched at SCA before. The staff are usually aware that it is cheaper at the competitors, I've never had any issues before.

  • Just bought 5 litre for $50 last week. Fml

    • +1

Smash em with it. Or, buy another one at the cheaper price.. then return with the old receipt.
      Unless you've ditched it?

Castrol Edge 10W 30 is $24.79 in latest SCA catalogue

    • -1

OP addressed that already - it's right there..
"For those who need 5w30 instead of the 10W30 the other place is selling"

      • -2

"the other place"…it is better to put things into perspective by giving the price and name of that "other place" so that ozbargainers can decide for themselves

  • +2

There isn't much difference between 5W-30 and 10W-30, especially for Australian climates and especially in summer.

  • Futbol takes me many plessis… hotplessis…. colplessis… Butipreperforitall.

  • Need deals on HPR5, this is tempting though.

I personally wouldn't buy the 10w-30 because it's ACEA A5/B5 which castrol list as unsuitable for my Honda. The 5W-30 is ACEA A3/B4. Does it make any real difference I don't know but just to be safe…

ACEA A3/B4 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use in high performance gasoline and direct injection diesel engines, but also suitable for applications described under A3/B3.

ACEA A5/B5 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use at extended drain intervals in high performance gasoline engines and car & light van diesel engines designed to be capable of using low friction low viscosity oils with a High temperature / High shear rate (HTHS) viscosity of 2.9 to 3.5 mPa.s. These oils are unsuitable for use in some engines. Consult owner manual or handbook if in doubt.

    • we have the same thought

Also, I've done some recent research because I got bored one year, according to the ridiculously long and overly verbose oil 'Wear Protection Ranking List' (https://540ratblog.wordpress.com) this Castrol is at number 56, the only Penrite in the (American) list is at 86. This means nothing for any other Pentite as oils from the same manufacturers seem to vary wildly, the newer Castrol 5w30 Extended Performance is even lower. Somewhat interestingly, I think this Castrol is the highest ranking similar weight oil readily available (like in an auto parts shop) to us apart from various Mobil 1. That's excluding diesel oils, Amsoil (Incredible/Outstanding categories) and some other specialist oil because you can't get easily it in a shop, various High Mileage oils (because they may not be suitable for all cars) and various Penzoil Ultra Pure Plus because it may or may not be identical to [Shell Helix Ultra with pure plus*]. However all of the Penzoil/Shell Ultra are in the Outstanding or above category too.

Now you can read the entire site but highly summarising he concludes various things including that:
-You should change your oil at max 8000 km (5000 miles) but preferably 5000km (3000 miles) to avoid (tested) Wear from combustion contaminants that are too small to be filtered out.
-5W30 is in general the best grade of oil to use in modern cars and most of the best rated ones are 5w30.
-Do not use a xxW50 oil because you want to increase your oil pressure for some reason. It doesn't flow and doesn't cool itself/engine, will likely end up thinner and much hotter and giving less protection than if you used a 5w30
-High Zinc (ZDDP) content does not reduce wear and often seems to increase it. Yeah, you'll be tired of hearing that if you read the blog…

This is ONLY a test of an oils ability to resist/prevent wear, etc blah blah…not life of oil or anything else. There's a lot of interesting info once you filter through the repeated Engineer speak and a lot of anti-zinc prothletising.

The wear Protection reference categories are:
    • Over 105,000 psi = INCREDIBLE wear protection
    • 90,000 to 105,000 psi = OUTSTANDING wear protection
    • 75,000 to 90,000 psi = GOOD wear protection
    • 60,000 to 75,000 psi = MODEST wear protection
    • Below 60,000 psi = UNDESIRABLE wear protection

3-0W40 Mobil 1 “FS” European Car Formula, API SN, synthetic = 127,221 psi
This new “FS” version was tested in Summer 2016. This oil produced the highest psi value ever seen in my testing, from any motor oil just as it comes right out of the bottle, with no aftermarket additives. Very impressive.

7-5W30 Mobil 1, Advanced Full Synthetic, API SN, GM dexos 1 approved = 117,799 psi

9-10W30 Mobil 1, Advanced Full Synthetic, API SN = 115,635 psi

25-5W30 Mobil 1, Advanced Full Synthetic, API SN = 105,875 psi
This is an earlier version that is no longer available. It has been replaced by a new formula version that now has GM dexos 1 approval. See above for the new version’s ranking position.

    Just curiously
52-20W50 Castrol GTX, API SN conventional = 96,514 psi

56-5W30 Castrol Edge with Titanium, API SN synthetic (gold bottle) = 95,717 psi

59- 5W30 Castrol GTX, API SN conventional = 95,392 psi

62-5W30 Valvoline SynPower, API SN synthetic = 94,942 psi

64-5W30 Valvoline Premium Conventional, API SN = 94,744 psi

    86-5W30 Penrite 10 Tenths Racing 5, synthetic = 88,992 psi

90-5W30 Valvoline Nextgen 50% Recycled Oil, API SN conventional = 87,563 psi

97-5W30 Castrol Edge w/Syntec, API SN synthetic (formerly Castrol Syntec), (black bottle) = 85,179 psi

100-5W30 Royal Purple API SN synthetic = 84,009 psi

103-5W30 Mobil 1 Extended Performance 15,000 mile, API SN synthetic = 83,263 psi

122-10W30 Mobil Super 5000, API SN, conventional = 76,461 psi

    123-5W30 Motul 8100 X-clean, API SM, synthetic = 76,166 psi
For reference, 5W30 Motul 300V Ester Core 4T Racing Oil, synthetic, produced a wear protection capability of 112,464 psi

126-5W30 Castrol Edge Extended Performance, API SN, GM dexos 1 approved, synthetic (gold bottle) = 74,899 psi

128-5W30 Royal Purple XPR (Extreme Performance Racing) synthetic = 74,860 psi

133-5W30 Mobil Super Synthetic, API SN, GM dexos 1 approved = 73,601 psi

134-5W30 Castrol GTX Magnatec, API SN, GM dexos 1 approved, synthetic blend = 73,566 psi

160-5W30 Toyota Motor Oil, API SN conventional = 68,069 psi

166-10W30 Royal Purple HPS (High Performance Street), synthetic = 66,211 psi

    176-5W30 Motul 8100 ECO-nergy, API SL, synthetic = 61,880 psi

I've ignored which oils have the highest TBN numbers and best thermal breakdown temps etc. because I can't be bothered to extract that info right now but it's all there if you're interested.
So according to his list the best tested oil you can buy is:

3- 0W40 Mobil 1 “FS” European Car Formula. But oh crap, I dont actually know if that's available here? The next best that I did find from one internet source, it's $107/5L though:

5- 5W30 Pentosin Pento Super Performance III, for gas and diesel engines, API S”M”, ACEA C3, synthetic, made in Germany = 122,711 psi

    http://liquidintelligence.com.au/pentosin/pentosin-motor-oil…
It's completely coincidental but I've actually spoken to this guy before because I bought some brake fluid, he seems cool and very willing to answer questions about his products. I don't think he sells crap stuff.

Aaaaand that's all I wrote folks, goodnight!

*None of this forms either my opinion or recommendation for your car, I thought I found some interesting info to share but personally I'm currently switching to this Castrol 5W30 then whichever of the Castrol, Mobil1, Shell Ultra or Amsoil 5W30/40 the cheapest when I need it. Thanks ;)

    • So what youre saying is I won? Plus vote for the effort.

Plenty of different oil at dedicated oil distributors. One near me stocks heaps of brands and variations in drums for public sale. Im sure not as many as the US gets though. But still, a lot more than SCA and Repco etc.

As sad as it is, I found the write up interesting. Many dont remember the ad oils aint oils, but they was right. I also loved the dinosaur tears (conventional) based oil in among the Barbie Doll wee wee. People dont believe it can be good oil.

      • Well it comes in a gold bottle so that's just like a medal for you right? ;)

The Quaker State and Brad Penn oils look to be very good, never seen them here. I dont know why buy the decent wear rating on the Valvoline Nexgen recycled oil surprises me, however it's TBN is appallingly low so I wouldn't run it more than a few thousand k's

Edit: wait, Quaker State is a division of Shell, it's probably rebranded Helix too so another plus vote for Shell. Maybe.
Haha, when you look up Quaker State at Wal-Mart (which is probably where they sell most of it) the Shell Rotella is listed with it! The full synth 5w30 Ultimate 5quarts is only US$19.77 too. Damn Australia taxes.

  • SCA prices matched Repeco and actually did it better by 50cents :) Combined with Amex $75 spend this is a great deal.
