Recently Moved to a New Suburb and Have Met Not-So-Nice-People

Hi OzB family, just want to rant a little and also gather some opinions. I recently moved into a newly built house (7 weeks ago) located in G*****,Victoria and everyday I hating below groups of people a little more:
1) Commodore/Ford drivers- for they are the worst/rudest drivers I have ever encountered
2) Taxi drivers-just can't drive in general
3) Tradies- from both those who built our house and those driving the commodores and fords
4) People live in this hood

Today I encountered one 40s zone(road work but no man working until 1km down the road and the speed has changed to 70z by then). I did the correct thing and slowed down to the speed limit, only to have the taxi driver behind me tailgating and eventually overtook me from the wrong side of the road(single lane).

Soon later I entered a temporary 60s(permanently 80s) zone for road work(again no working man but I don't want to cop a fine). Did the correct thing again by slowing down and sticking to the speed, only to have the Ford driver in high-vis vest behind me to tailgate and stuck the finger at me. Annoyed as I was I brake checked him and he still didn't back off. He turned left 5 minutes later and I entered an 80s zone. I sat at 80km/h and the Commodore driver behind me started tailgating(single lane, yes I know I was doing 80km/h as I have checked my speed again GPS,but even if I wasn't, I would never risk it). I brake-checked him and he didn't back off so I slowed my car down to 75km/h. This is me everyday, I am sick and tired of this. My old suburb had lots of shit old drivers and at least they didn't bully other road users.

TLDR: Not-So-Nice drivers who won't obey road rules, bully the ones who do. What category do you fall into?

EDIT: edited out the harsh language. I was pretty annoyed at the time of writing.
EDIT 2: Just thought I would share some stats I found:

Keep calm and friendly, don't let them change that.

    Nutter.

Sounds like you need a toy inside your car.
When driving at night, you could squish/press the toy for it to light up.
Flashing Red-and-Blue will make the tailgaters think twice before continuing to tailgate you.
Don't ask me how I know this trick.

Brake check the wrong person and you'll end up in hospital. Is it really worth it? Besides, if they don't have insurance, and they actually hit you then drive off, then what have you achieved…?

    • +2

Agree. Brake checking under any circumstances is extraordinarily dangerous. I'll also add that if you really pick the wrong person your trip to the hospital may not be a direct result of the accident caused.

  • +4

Scum of the earth is overstating it a bit don't you think. Not sure what Commodore and Ford have to do with this. What you have encountered is annoying but you sound like a bit of a whinger to me.

  • +2

Stop antagonising the morons. No issue with doing the speed limit at all, but "brake-checking" them is just stooping to their level and asking for trouble.

Just smile and keep driving your (the correct) way.

  • +3

You are one of the people in the hood now remember.
And you should never brake check someone, that's worse than what the others you said did.

  • Ozbargain is full of yuppies (me included). I think most people are decent human beings here.

I think Australians need to take a page out of how the New Zealanders act on the road. Kind and patient people.

Sydney is filled with those scum. The tradies are possibly the rudest driver's I've ever seen.

  • What's the Suburb?

    Thanks.

  • Wow, that's how the polite drivers behave in my 'hood.

  • Get 2 dash cams rear and front 1080P to capture number plates, get even

    1. I had never done brake-checks until 2 weeks ago. The car is getting a little old and I thought I'd be happy to get a new one. However thanks for those who've asked me to keep calm and drive on, I will try to keep that in mind. It gets a little bit harder when you cop abuses day in day out and usually after a long 8.5hr shift.

    2. I like the idea of the toy that flashes blue and red light, but tradies don't really come out at night do they?

    3. RE:Commodore and Ford drivers, I was planning to put a disclaimer that it was a generalisation but during the heat of the moment I've forgotten to do so. But let's face it, most tradies drive those cars and they are not the nicest people on the road.

    4. Dashcams, yes, have been thinking about those since I moved into this new hood…I am also parking at a different train station and the car door was scratched on the second day. Might have to get those remain active after you've parked your car.

    5. This particular suburb is located in the north of Melbourne, it's expensive for no reason( hardly any PT options, no shopping center in close proximity, rather bare everywhere). Rich people here are rich because of **** dealings (so I've heard).

This particular suburb is located in the north of Melbourne, it's expensive for no reason( hardly any PT options, no shopping center in close proximity, rather bare everywhere). Rich people here are rich because of **** dealings (so I've heard).

why did you choose to move into a suburb that is expensive with no reason, and occupied by known drug dealings?

      • Maybe for drug dealings?

        • -1

          That's actually what I do…but legally :P

Because my parents have chosen the suburb( oh don't ask me why, they've made lots of strange decisions…).
I won't be there for long(hopefully) but I hate to think this is a place they will be retired in :(

        • yep, that's why they wear hi-vis and follow you closly, just in case you want a deal… a new customer, yaaaa

  • 1) Commodore/Ford drivers- for they are the worst/rudest drivers I have ever encountered

Maybe drivers of BMW and AUDI very nice and patient ?

    • Let me add that my sample size is probably skewed as there are significantly more tradies around this new suburb(houses are getting built, tradies like living in this suburb(?) and they all somehow happen to be driving Commodores/Fords).
I would say that the BMW and AUDI drivers I have came across in this particular suburb are nicer than Commodore/Ford drivers)

    • Sure, once the BMW and Audi drivers learn to use an indicator once in a while, they will be better. ;)

OP: I think that a few instances of poor drivers, has coloured your vision. The model of car is irrelevant, a bad driver is a bad driver. In my city it tends to be Subaru and Camry drivers that appear to be the worst, but that could just be the sheer number of them on the road. Probability would show that the more type of one car the greater the chance of encountering a "less than proficient" driver of said model.

Don't let them dictate your driving habits.

Do not resort to brake testing someone, it will go bad for you and when it goes bad, it will be very bad. If you already live in a suburb of suspect individuals, causing them more anger on the road is just "poking the bear".

If they give the finger, just give 'em a wave, you have done nothing wrong and have nothing to fear if you do not antagonise them.

NB: I second the Dashcam idea. :)

      safe driving!!

  • Do you ever stop complaining?

  • +1

Welcome to the neighbourhood, sounds like you are an asset to the place.
What a strange post, some fair criticism of poor driving with a side serve of stereotyping, judgementalism, and veiled accusations of crime.
I presume you don't work in a trade from your disparaging comments. Are there any other types of "those people" in your expensive area that you feel don't belong?
Maybe you could put up small signs with your opinions out the front of your place to share your thoughts with the other neighbours?

    • +3

      Some background/context

Give you an idea why OP looks so 'fondly' upon tradies.

      • Ah-ha thanks! I thought you would link the post where I complained about my builder(or parents')!

Just to answer your question mskeggs, my dad is in trades and he is the nicest dude I know. I've got nothing against tradies prior to all these experiences but it has been a real eye opener in the process of house building. We haven't really had good experiences with tradies in the last 12 months.

Spackbace, I have never had and would never look down on anyone's occupation. The claims I made were merely observations from the past 7 weeks and please pardon the language, I was pretty annoyed at the time.

    Is that Geelong?

  • +2

Just follow the road rules and you do you.
Honestly don't understand why people get so annoyed by other drivers, it's stress for nothing.

    • Thanks. I will try to remember that. I am normally a pretty chilled person but the stress accumulated from dealing with not-so-good builder for the past 12 months has slowly taken toll on me.

How to survive in da hood:
Rule number one: get yourself a gun

    • +1

Thanks for the advise! Since it is illegal to carry a real/fake gun without proper licensing, any idea if this would do the trick?

      https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Summer-plastic-banana…

      :P

      • Looks legit to me, just let 'em know you'll fill 'em full of potassium or beta-carotene…

      • +1

It's illegal to drive without a license.
But you went and got a license, so go get a license.

  • Is it Geelong, Victoria? lol

    • Haha it's not! Have I gotten my direction mixed up? It's up the other way, nowhere near the water(well not sea water).

      • Greensborough?

        • +1

          Deffo Gladston Park

        • @singlemalt72:
I used to lived around and thought the old folks were bad..until this!

  • Get a sticker made up for the rear bumper: "I drive the speed limit—> get off my *ss & pass already!"

    http://www.ebay.com.au/bhp/custom-car-stickers

  • if it weren't for the description of 70km an hour and no public transport i'd be saying it was Glenroy.
But i'll take Gladstone Park as the suburb.

  • +1

    Is it Greenvale?

  • Move again

  • But you haven't actually met any of them
Maybe if you did you might have some sympathy for people who work for a living
Either that or you could become a really overqualified cop

    • Who doesn't work for a living? All I asked from other road users is courtesy. Not riding all the way up my butt is a good start. I think there is absolutely no excuse to be behaving like that on the road. It's a few minutes of your life sticking to the speed limit.

I would really like to talk to all of them just to hear their side of the story.

      • all of them

        All 2 of them?

      • Perhaps you should talk to people instead of taking your road rage to the internet?
