Replacing an iPad Screen

Can someone confirm it being told the correct info
I took my iPad to a place to get the cracked screen replaced however my mistake over the phone I told them it was an iPad 2
Dropped it off and he said it's an iPad 3 and the only screen I have Is for an iPad 2
I said isn't the screen exactly the same
He says no the ribbon cables is in a different spot on the iPad 3 hence why there is a different screen for it ??
Is this correct ?

  • Just go to a different place.

The installer will know what he is talking about.

Lol, you think he is lying so he doesn't have to repair it nor get paid? I'd assume it's not his first time replacing an ipad screen.

  • Hey I have No idea - I was under the impression it's the same size screen.
I never said he was lying I just wanted to make sure ?

Well you do imply that he could be lying.

    • It's the same screen size, but iPad 2 and 3 are different products.

  • However, you wouldn't be able to use an iPad 2 diggie on an iPad 3. The cable just isn't long enough.

The board sockets (connectors) are the same. The iPad 3 digitizer cable is longer though. So you can use the iPad 3 digitiser on an iPad 2 with a couple of folds on the longer cable. However, you wouldn't be able to use an iPad 2 dig on an iPad 3. The cable just isn't long enough

    Repairer is correct.

The digitisers connect differently as the mainboards are not the same. The 3 & 4 however are compatible with each other.

  • You should order the screen and install it yourself. Save some $$$ and use whatever screen you want, you don't have to be dictated to by no shop assistant!

Yes, the repair shop is ripping you off . in fact you can actually cut down a Samsung tablet screen to fit into an ipad (any model) and for half the price.

  • You really think apple is going to use the exact same screen for each ipad? Technology gets better over time, so apple will want to upgrade the screen, not to mention what would be the point of making a new ipod if they were all identical to each other.

  • I want to replace my iPad Air (1) screen as it's cracked. Apple said can't replace, need to buy a new ipad. Chinese repair shop said no problem they'll replace for $50.
I was just wondering if someone could shed some light on the quality of the screens they would use? Is the quality of a cheap retina screen replica comparable with the original one? Will the touch sensor be as accurate? Will the colours look exactly the same?

    • My experience with the cheap Chinese screens was horrible. My son's iPad got screen replacement 3 times and I ended up taking it to Apple store, paid extra and got the replacement unit. The cheap Chinese screen got cracked for no reason after few months

    • Try it for $50. That's better than buying a whole new iPad.
