greay price but that resistive touchscreen!

  • How do these devices get their traffic info? Do they need internet connectivity?

    • +1

No. I believe it is over FM.

      • FM?

        • It connects to data services through your smart phone. Not sure if the data use quoted is for one hour of standing still, or driving in heavy Sydney traffic. Connects using Bluetooth to phone.
          From a Tom Tom review:
TomTom claims the data consumption is minimal – just 7MB per month for an hour's usage a day during peak traffic times – you will need to ensure your smartphone has enough power to maintain the connection for your entire journey, or you will lose the service

        • @Op54:

Thought that might be the case - any real advantage over just using your smartphone as a navigator?

        • @ryangus:
To use your own phone as a navigator, you need to get additional car charger, and a stable holder. For me, I use a cheap Lenovo Tab 3 Essential as GPS for commercial purpose.

        • @ryangus: Didn't some state just make it illegal to use your mobile phone at all, even in a cradle, or was that just for L / P platers?

        • My Garmin 1450 uses FM . Looks like things have moved have moved on in the GPS world since 2012.:)

        • @bbtlovebbt: I've been looking for a map solution and just happen to have the same tablet as you laying around. So you just use regular gmaps but with only the GPS turned on? That's enough?? I mean it doesn't lag as it tracks? Thanks for any help

After the death of my TomTom go 500 within 14 months of purchase, I am just away from this brand. The quality is not good.

    • +1

Same here. Only used 5 times in 12 months after purchase, it was dead when I need it next month after warranty. Bad luck.

  • 3 months safety camera alert free, would have been great if lifetime. I think My Garmin 2597lmt had it. Looking to buy another one but the product has been discontinued.

  • In market for 5" GPS within $150 mark (using phone is not an option)….don't mind if it doesn't have traffic Updates feature so wondering if this particular one is best i can get in my budget or any other options?

  • what does a GPS do that my phone doesn't?
