I originally bought a kmart bike for my kid, it broke then i bought one from the bike store and it was just so heavy when ever they fell it really caused some damage. Eventually after some trial and error i bit the bullet and bought the fisher price bike and it has been one of the best kids bicycles I have ever purchased for an <5 year old. I paid $380 from the bike store but it looks like ebay has it for $279

Low handle bars for better control especially for a girl. Solid training wheels that dont bend and warp, quality components. Aluminium frame so nice and light. No tool for the seat post and training wheels so easy to adjust or remove trainers on the fly when their confidence builds up.

I bought this bike for my daughter as well.

She usually rides a Cruzee balance bike and still does, however this came up on special on pushys for $50 and grabbed it due to its lower weight.

To be honest kids bikes are a minefield as captoobvious said.

Ive been racing mountain bikes for 20 years now so have a large amount of experience and kids bikes fall in the following categories:

      1) Kmart style shop bikes - Cheap but terribly made, heavy, will rust and look terrible in a month or two. The bike will become unusable after a short while and be a massive negative and possibly even put your kid of riding for a while.

      2) Bike shop bikes: Think branded bikes like specialised, giant etc. They are much better made but all still suck. The big companies know that people want a brand name and although they build reliable bikes they are insanely heavy. As an example the equivalent specialized i was looking at was 10-11kg….. my daughter weighs 13kg.

      3) The rare breed - These types are made by companies who genuinely want your kids to enjoy riding. Think of Cruzee balance bikes - Full alloy so no rust and weigh under 2kg. The fisher price almost falls into this category as its its alloy and well made, however its still a bit heavy - I think its around 8kg but to be honest that beats the vast majority of competitors.

The only brand i know that is specifically trying hard in this space is BYK as there bikes are well made and around 7kg

OP make sure you get your DC a helmet! The head is where the child's brain is!

    Any feedback?

    • perfect. its only fora few years then they will be too big for it.
      look at Kmart/BigW as well.

    • No better than a kmart bike, if you go down this path save money and just go to kmart.

Our local Big W had a couple on clearance recently. Just your luck as to what your local store has at any time.

My girls have had bikes from Big W, Kmart and Aldi - all have been great and done the job. Never had any issues with rust or breakage and kids have seemed to ride them fine. They grow out of the sizes quickly when they're young so I've never spent a huge amount.

  • If she's never had one before, get her a wooden balance bike (ebay is easiest?) and let her get a feel for being on a bike for 6 months first, guarantee you she won't need training wheels when she graduates up to a real bike.

We did this with our son (he's now 4) and last week he literally learned to ride a 'big boy bike' in 15 minutes flat. He still needs a bit of help getting started but he was doing circuits of the close almost immediately.

And we got the bike from the local dump for $5. So many barely used kids bikes its not funny. If you're the slightest bit handy it's a goldmine for kids bike gear.
