No offense OP, but "half price" is the standard price for most of Kathmandu's merchandise.

    • Yep. Which is then still upto double other regularly on-sale down jackets of equal quality or better. Haven't bought any from them since discovering LandsEnd'

Very correct- this is both standard $$$ for Kathmandu and overpriced. As is everything at Kathmandu (only their microfibre towels are decent)

        Here's why:
        1. 550FP duck down is very low quality among specialist outdoor brands. Commonly US, European, and UK brands will use 750, 850, 950FP goose down.
        2. Polyester shell- very generic. No high quality polyesters (like pertex) being used.
        3. No DWR- or at least its not mentioned.
        4. 440g weight- given the generic polyester, if the overall weight is 440g its likely to have very little down.
        5. Construction- looks sewn through, not baffled. Sewn through creates cold spots.

You might point out that a Pertex Quantum 950FP goose down DWR baffled Jacket from the like of RAB is going to be much more expensive. But my point is that this Kathmandu jacket is the lowest standard in all categories and better jackets can be found elsewhere. Mountain Designs often have similar styles with slightly better quality + cheaper if you want an Australian brand.

None of this matters if you want a jacket for the city or car camping and like the style. I just wanted to post this in case people expected to buy quality equipment for remote walking or ski touring.

Is it Gore-Tex like George Costanza's one?

    just in time for summer

  • Deal isn't epiq for summer, but good effort on your first post, OP!

  • What's better for the dollar, Kathmandu down jacket for $149 or Uniqlo Ultra Light down for $80?

    • Seems only XS left so you're out of luck.

Person I'm buying for is basically a hobbit so it's fine.

    • I received the Uniqlo ultra light down as a gift and am not a fan of it. It's probably adequate for the Aussie winter (eg Victorian) and arguably more stylish but will not be much good in colder climates. On the other hand, I bought a Kathmandu duck down men's hooded jacket v3 for about $180 and it's been a fantastic investment. I've worn it to Europe and the US during their colder months and it's performed well. I remember coming across the Epiq range and my impression was that the jackets were not as 'expensive as the main down range, but seemed very similar during in-store browsing. Either way, it's Kathmandu for me regarding down jackets.

    • Uniqlo ultra light is well regarded with trekers. Good weight to warmth ratio.

But that's the thing, you need to be active in it to stay warm.
This would be better, but not wind or water proof.

I used a macpac halo down jacket (similar to this) + marmot water and wind proof shell in -2 snowy Europe fairly comfortably (with gloves and beanie) for reference

  • The Epiq is a good jacket. I bought the men's when on sale several months ago. Very happy with it.

I do agree with first post.

But if someone were buying online most items are in their eBay store.
Can get 10% off with current eBay promo

  • Macpac halo down jackets are on special for 99 dollars again

  • I'd go Macpac or The North Face
