Kitchen Chef 3.5L Air Fryer $79 Delivered @ My Discount Store

150
BFEARLY25

I have been looking for an air fryer(fan forced convection oven). I always felt the 900mm oven was over kill to cook 6 chicken nuggets. Couldn't get food to become crunchy in a microwave. Didn't want to hassle of cleaning up after using a deep fryer.

Saw the Phillips Airfryer XL for $329 at Costco, but couldn't justify the price. Found an expired deal on Ozbargain for a Kitchen Chef 3.5L air fryer here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/275916

The coupon code BFEARLY25 still works, bringing down the price of the air fryer to $74 + $5 shipping. I have no idea for how long the coupon code will work for. Maybe the store rep can let us know the expiry. This model seems to have good reviews and is as big as the Phillips XL. This is about the cheapest air fryer of this size and spec. The only thing that is similar in function and cheaper is the Kmart 13L convection oven for $45, but it takes up too much room, longer cooking time, and is also ugly(subjective). Good if you want to cook a large roast chicken and vegies.

can we really roast a chicken in it? if yes how long will it take. And/or what-else can we really cook in that?

    • On the Kmart one youncan roast a chicken in it. I dont think 3.5L one is big enough. Maybe a size 9 chicken.

    • yes you actually can! I do it in mine all the time, takes about 45 min but the chicken comes out really nice and moist. I usually do whole small chickens (around 1.2 kg max) or butterflied chickens. I put in a kilo chunk of marinated sirloin the other day and it was also very nice. Great for crisping up veges too. I have the smaller size but thinking about getting this one now.

      • Thanks.

I have a Eurolab Fryer 4litre and no way could you fit a whole chicken in it (no even a average size half leg of lamb)
Mine does not cook any quicker, but it heats real quick been compact.
I cook chips, heat frozen pies etc and cook schnitzels, its very convenient, if the packet says cook at 200 degrees for 15 mins that what I do.
Also the general opinion with these is cleaning is a bit awkward.
I use mine quiet a lot and would buy another one hope this helps new buyers.

    • I meant the Kmart 13L could be used to roast chicken. 3.5L is too small for that.

  • lol most of the commercials I've seen for these types of fryers involve party pies, nuggets and sausage rolls as the 'healthy' alternative to frying. No wonder half the population is obese!

You are right, reheating pre-fried food isn't healthy. However you can do healthy cooking too. Anything you can do in the oven you can do in one of these. Save electricity by only heating 3.5L rather than the whole oven.

      • yup I agree but I can guarantee you a large majority of people would use it to cook junk food as a healthy alternative :)

I bought the Philips Viva Airfryer for convenience and definitely started eating more chips/wedges/potato gems because of it, but you don't need to use it exclusively on junk. I've had mine about 2 weeks and have successfully experimented with:
Omelettes (baking tin required - anything that will fit in there will do)
          Marinated chicken
          Chicken wings
          Roast pork/beef
          Ribs
          Frozen fish
          Schnitzel
          Roast vegies

We own a conventional oven, so the airfryer basically halves cooking times and has a better overall result. Also love the fact it's set and forget - I can whisk up my omelette and throw it in the airfryer for 10-12 mins while I get ready for work. Downside is it's only big enough to fit servings for 2 adults.

        • @Ayedeevee:

Great for a quick breakfast too - toss in a frozen hash brown and a couple slices of bacon, 200 degrees for 10 mins and done.

      Why?

  • I got one of these off ebay and I use it almost every night. Main reason I got it was I can't eat fried food while on my diet but I was craving beer batter fries!

No regrets at all. It's awkward to clean, all those holes in the base are great for the fan forced heat but it's where all the food drippings get stuck. I use an old toothbrush for that.

Most surprising food I cook is a frozen steak, straight from the freezer. 20 mins and crispy like a roast.

The other main reason this is useful is we have a celiac in the family. This way she gets fish and chips like the rest of the family without needing to clean out the deep fryer.

    • Can you put water in it and steam food?

      • Never tried, sorry. I steam my stuff in the microwave with the red decor range.

But my advice to everyone is to grab the two level rack accessory from the Phillips airfyer. There are two sizes, get the smaller one. It gives you an extra level for your food so everything isn't so squashed.

  • We pretty much just use ours for fries/chips which it does great , also great for a late night snack " after a few beers " without the worry of a potential chip pan fire when i fall asleep lol.

    • I can imagine it being good with Spring Roll and Chicko Rolls. Tasty evil temptations.

yeah, it's actually a great product but the entire marketing around eating healthy is just BS. People seem to believe that the household oven is standing between them and a healthy lifestyle, then they buy this thing and cook up rolls, pasties, nuggets and all sorts of other junk. If you want to eat roast chicken, it's far cheaper and easier to buy it from Woolies.

  • Got the Air Fryer couple of hours ago. It got delivered to the neighbours house by StarTrek/Auspost. I have cooked wedges and Gyoza, both turned out exactly as it would in my oven. Except it was quicker and perhaps a little bit more crunchy. It could take couple of years to recoup the $79 by saving electricity. Hope it lasts longer than 2 years.
