Serious Question: What to Do with PS4/Xbox One?

Hey guys, I hate to be creating a thread, but I was hoping someone else has dealt with this issue before.

Since the PS4/Xbox One both have some processing power I thought there would be other uses aside from gaming and as a HTPC.

I'd love to hear some productive uses they can be used for!

Paperweight or decorative piece? What were you wanting to do with it beside playing games or media?

  • I'd suggest Folding@home apps, but I have no idea whether such things are available for consoles.

    • There was one for the PS3 but I don't think there's one for the new consoles.

Get another 50 of them and hook them together to create a minisuper computer

On my Xbox One I watch netflix, iview, youtube, play games and watch stuff on usb. I can't really think of anything else you could use it for.

      Same on the PS.

Not really anything else. They aren't like the last gen of consoles that weren't as locked down. PS3 launched with Linux capabilities (taken away over time) .These consoles are just consoles. Sure, XBONE you can do more stuff with through the MS store, but nothing of huge interest.

you play the game w/ family and friends, thats probably about it, everything else i do is on PC.

  • They don't have efficient architectures for the price. The pS3 on the other hand utilised a new experimental 6-core Cell processor, that could unleash some really really good threaded processing. They were used a decent amount as 'supercomputers'.

You want a pc buy a pc.

  • They are gaming consoles at their core that can do a decent amount of media related things. If you want to play games, grab one and enjoy the added media capabilities.

Otherwise buy a stick pc if you are just interested in a HTPC.

  • Does anyone have a price list of the components used in a Xbox One/PS4?

  • For people who are interested, I did some searching and found this: https://www.onmsft.com/news/xbox-one-s-teardown-sees-signifi…

  • Certainly not worth buying one at $300 plus. I use my Xbox to play games i cannot play on my pc (exlusives, splitscreen, free for gold games etc). Obviously, same would apply to PS4.

  • Here's what you do

    Sell your PS4 / XB1

    Buy a tablet

I recommend either a Samsung Galaxy Tab S/S2 or Nvidia Shield Tab (but there is many many more)

Pixel C if you wanna feel like a baller also kind of future proof but double the cost at like maybe 33% improvement in some graphics and CPU ram performance in some areas.. we still don't have a 2016 tablet this year that really outshines the rest but it's ok because the current ones are very ok and my guess is the next one's will start supporting 2k resolutions and maybe even 4k resolutions with much more ram and battery power well maybe not battery power since battery technology has kind of stood still for some time now anyways going way off track

Then pimp out your bed and grab an anker 30ft micro USB power line+ cable for roughly $30 aud ask the store rep on here for a discount

Look for a tablet mount to further ease the eventual stress you will feel on your arms

Relax back and enjoy entertainment in bed with your new tablet

Only downside is having to lift up half a kilo worth of stress constantly so yeah be prepared for exciting new arm muscles or just sore arms

Only downside ATM is no 4k YouTube or Netflix content or media

Most streams are 720p some 1080

  • Thanks for your ideas!

  • Boot up time and power consumption means I have an AppleTV as well as game consoles. Plex and other apps would take far too long to launch from a cold start and standby mode uses more power than a media box running.

    • When you say "Plex devices" are you referring to a PC running Plex?

      • Yes
