Whilst not an epic deal, it's a decent price.

Been looking for a "cheap" 2 bay Synology for my Dad and $158 is a lower price than I've seen it recently, the shipping is standard Aus Post rates, worked out to ~$13 for me in Perth. They also have the DS216j for $198 but that's closer to the "standard" pricing, although still slightly cheaper.

  Have been wondering about a gutsy 2 bay NAS that can transcode + torrent anything. How does this fare?

  I've zero NAS and zero plex experience but competent computer user.

    Not good. This is the base model and doesn't have the guts to transcode.

    You'd want something like the qnap ts251+ for transcoding.

    Or a 216play - personally I like the Synology OS better but they are a little bit pricier.

      This is one of the things that bothers me. I want a good OS with current/well made apps. Is Synology much better?

        Synology DSM is one of the best NAS solutions I've used and they keep the OS/apps fairly up to date, come with mobile apps etc.

        Not sure how well this unit performs per se, but for my Dad (who it's for) it'll be fine!
