Laptop Recommendation for University and Software Work

I noticed a few similar posts, however with the sales that are currently happening, I think some new recommendations might be in order.
Open to any suggestions around the 1-2k price range (preferably on the lower end, but can go up to 2k if absolutely necessary).

  • 8GB+ ram
  • Long battery life
  • Don't need dedicated graphics card
  • i5/i7 CPU

I really appreciate any help while these sales last!
Thanks

    • Boxing day sale

      • and like every other year it will be underwhelming. Sale price will just be ordinary price with some other extras thrown in.

Looking at you, Lenovo. They're mimicking the Domino's pizza' coupon code sale strategy.

  • If looking for a cheaper ultrabook with good performance, than the Lenovo Thinkpad 13 is a good choice. If you want to go higher and with better build quality, than you can't go wrong with the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon, Dell XPS 13, HP Spectre range.

  • Lenovo Yoga 910. Wait for it to go under 1.5k though, bit pricey at 2k.

I would recommend dell latitude or similar business laptops. They would give you more processing power rather than graphics, touch screen etc.

    • This ism't really true. Dell's business-grade Latitude range have almost identical computing hardware as their equivalent consumer-grade Inspiron range - same processor, same RAM, same integrated GPU etc. As a result, they perform very similarly. This is also the case for HP's EliteBook range and Lenovo's ThinkPad range.

What these business grade laptops DO have over the consumer models is generally:
      a) better security and networking features;
      b) a more robust build - some even have MIL-STD drop test and water/dust certification; and
      c) a longer warranty, with on-site service.

Get a ThinkPad T460s with an i5. They are light enough (1.36kg) with good enough battery to last a day (10.5 hours with i5). Well built, and RAM & SSD are easy to upgrade yourself. Around $1.5k during sales (current pre-Xmas sale is crap so wait for boxing day). However the all-black exterior might not be able to compete with the other laptops with half-eaten fruit on the lid when you are working in the labs or in cafe.
