Can't scrape together $5000 for a pair of HiFiMAN HE-1000V2's? Why not just settle for these mid-range cans. They normally retail for around 320 USD on Amazon so this seems like a great price. For those familiar with Massdrop's AK K7XX's, these are the headphone's that they were based off. Except these are made in Slovakia rather than China and also come at a lower price (after factoring in exchange rates).

  • Oh hell yes. My current K712s have been falling apart for a bit now. Was looking for a replacement and reaaaaally didn't wanna have to a get a Chinese model.

  • i've been looking at getting a decent set of cans and considered the mass drop K7XX units, or was going to wait for the Philips X2's to drop in price though not sure which way to go. Whats the minimum AMP I would need for these for gaming?

    Cheers

Reading around online, it seems that the K712 PROs are generally considered a touch better than the Massdrop K7XXs but their much higher price made the Massdrop editions an easier recommendation in terms of bang for buck. But now that the K712 PROs can be had for even less than the K7XXs, it's not even a contest in my mind. The X2s can be had for $100 more here (http://www.noisymotel.com/product.asp?ProductID=868) but I don't really know that much about them except they seem to be pretty well-regarded.

A lot of people recommended getting an amp for the K712s so I got the $65 SMSL M3 that's on Massdrop right now.

      • Yep, overcame my doubts. It's a no-brainer.

This is all me personally speaking.
I have had these K712 Pros for about 3 months now. I have been using them with the Creative Sound Blaster HD USB found at this link: http://us.creative.com/p/sound-blaster/sound-blaster-digital…

The Creative is enough to drive these easily. In fact I have tested them with my 15 year old Sennheiser HD555s and my recent HD6XX from Mass Drop.
The Creative sound card is more than capable of driving all 3 headphones.

I also recently purchased the Objective 2 ODAC+ AMP from JDS Labs.

Now this is all sound to my ears. So for you or others it might be different.
The Objective 2 with 1x gain is very similar volume wise to the Creative sound card. However I can tell them apart in terms of sound quality. The Objective 2 is ever slightly better than the Creative across all headphones. Just slightly. The Creative sounds great for how much it costs.

The Objective 2 has a 1x gain and 3.3x gain. With 3.3x gain you will go deaf if you crank up the volume no matter what headphone you listen with.

Now going back to the headphones. I took my K712 Pros to work and a friend of mine compared them to his K7XX from mass drop. The two are pretty much the same except the K712 Pro are a bit on the warmer side. Other than that they sound pretty much the same.
Comparing them to the Sennheisers however is a different story. Bit in short, when I first got my AKGs I thought they didn't sound as good as my HD555s. But after owning them for 3 months now I honestly cant go back to anything other than my AKGs. In fact I am really tempted to buy another just so I can have more :P

I have had my HD6XX for about 2 weeks now. A bit early to tell. But I can honestly say I doubt I'll like them more than my AKGs.

But as I said before everyone is different and what these sound to me might be different to you or anyone else.
This was just my opinion of these 3 headphones and how they sound on 2 different DAC+AMPS.
I got these for listening to music of course. But since I am a gamer and have tested them with games also, I can say they are amazing for games too but for games you could always go for something cheaper that still sounds great.

All I can say is that when I was at high school and going from on-board motherboard sound to what I have now is beyond compare.

      Hope this helped.

Thanks for sharing that mate. Reminds me of my time back in early 90's with my HD490 and Sound Blaster Pro (8 bit!) listening to S3M files (no mp3's back then). lol

      • Thanks for the info guys. I bit the bullet and bought these as from the above and reviews they are the goods. now to look for the amp / DAC. looking through the recommendations above.

Anyone used the topping range of amps/DAC, they look the goods but looks can be deceiving.

        Cheers

      Pretty much any amp will get you volume. If you want better sound quality, an Objective 2 amp will serve you well. They sound great, have heaps of power, can do all the little details you want for positional audio, and they're cheap (relatively speaking). I have one, and I can say it produces a better sound than the HP out on any of the gear I own, including;

      a. a Xonar Essence One
      b. an Audiolab 8000S
      c. a Pioneer SC-2022
      d. a Violectric V200

This is consistent across Massdrop K7XX, AKG Q701, Beyer DT250 and Audio-Technica AD900's.

The K7XX is a stallion. Don't cheap out on it with a sub-standard amp, or you won't get what you paid for.

  • I've been eyeing these as an easier-to-drive alternative to HD650 and stumbled upon these beautiful AKG's and think they're quite promising.

Doncha forget that the sounds could become way more well-defined with a decent DAC/amp. If listening to music at your desktop PC, you might wanna consider Asus Xonar Essence STX II currently through 3rd party seller on Amazon for A$276 delivered:

  • Came to see if the description mentions the vastly superior (price-wise) HiFiMAN HE-1000V2. Disappointed, I was not.

  • Be weary when purchasing from eGlobal. Just have a look on Whirlpool and OzBargain about people complaints with after sale support.

    • I would agree with this but in this case we're talking about headphones and not fiddly electronics like mobiles.
