Is this the cheapest intel 7th-gen FHD laptop deal at the moment? Looks like it so far

    • Definitely is! been keeping a close eye out for laptops recently. Tip of the hat for the Filthy Frank reference @OP

Sorry if I'm doing it wrong.

    You're doing it right :)

$779 @ Domayne, listed as Ideapad 510-GB but same model number 8OSVOOGVAU

  • Why do they show the screen lying flat? What's the point??

    • +5

      To show hinge range-of-motion.

  • +4

How does this compare to Acer Aspire E5-575G-5230 on sale for $799 at the goodguys?
    i5 - 7200U
    940MX - 2GB
    16 GB DDR4
    1 TB HD

    • +3

depends if FHD matters or better gaming capability and more ram

tough choice id say both has its ups but if resolution isnt deal breaker id go for the Acer as i favour the spec more

        Thanks.
Gaming, well I still play Civ IV on occasions but that's about it.
Basically I need to get rid of my desktop and get a lappy. My current PC is a 3570K, 16GB RAM with an Evo 250GB. The Acer seems like the best option I've found so far for sub $800 but I'm not too familiar with laptop hardware.

920mx gonna struggles at gaming @ 1080p anyway, so no point getting full hd for gaming.

that acer is a better choice for you.

          @phunkydude:
Specs-wise yes. My advice is to try the keyboards on an Acer and a Lenovo model (preferably identical but if not, just one from a similar range) and see if you can tolerate typing on each.
It's a personal thing and there's no right or wrong answer, but I don't like the keyboards that Acer use and would buy the Lenovo instead because of this.

    • Great Computer (ACER from The Good Guys ) and specs as listed here.

      And with 16GB of RAM

      Very happy buyer

  • Can this be upgraded to an SSD?

    • +1

probably, might have an m2 slot as well

  • +1

    is keyboard backlit

    • +1

i doubt it at this price point

    • +1

Looks like it on Amazon, assume it's the same

      • +2

I grabbed one, no backlit sadly

  • It doesn't state if it's Windows 10 home or. PRO. Does anyone know?

    • +1

      will be home ode1

    • +1

      Definitely windows 10 home

  • What's even the point of the nvidia GPU?
It's only like 20% faster than the iGPU.

    • not really, its less taxing on the cpu, better battery life and generally much better than igpu for sure

      • Discrete GPUs are worse for battery life than iGPUs that's one of the main reasons they were implemented and the use of one gpu over another should put no special strain on the CPU, the only resource shared by the iGPU and the CPU is RAM and if you're putting a whole GPU in your system to free up 1GB or so of memory, you've gone wrong somewhere.
All of this would be for naught if it was a decision between iGPU and the 920MX, surely the faster one has it's merits even if it's only slightly faster, but the iGPU is there either way so might as well drop the discrete one and free up some cost

        • Not really true at all in my case but I agree to some point

I get better battery life with my AMD r7 than I do with the Intel GPU so I am not sure how they works out as my CPU usage is much less on battery mode

Either way it may be a different case by case scenario for everyone but I am doing much better on discrete than integrated due to the better power saving and underclocking the actual integrated gpu does

Granted I get 10 hours to my e560 battery I have no complaints

        • Hey, just wondering if your e560 is the i56200u one? how is it. considering buying it for school but not sure.

  • Could someone tell me if this will be fast enough to view large photoes?20mp+?my current laptop takes a a few seconds to see the next photo, sometimes even freeze.

    • Most of the time that depends on the speed of the storage device. This is a hdd so it wouldn't be as fast as an SSD, but the specs of the computer itself are definitely good enough to view large photos.

      • Thank you.

Just wonder how much cash reward you could get?
Their website just said up to 50%.

  • I wish these manufacturers would trade in the GPU for an SSD. A 920 GPU is worthless for gaming, and barely better than the iGPU. Doing so would save weight and battery. I would recommend this to my parents as an upgrade apart from the GPU/lack of SSD. It seems like an Australian thing that so many of the laptops sold here have shitty GPUs for some reason, whereas in the USA there are many more choices without one.

ended up purchasing - am happy with the lappy thanks

FYI, for anyone still considering, I tried one in store. The GPU is really GeForce 940MX, not 920MX. HN listed the wrong specs. Picking mine up in the mornning.

  • For those who've bought this/ or looked at this in store, can you tell me if:

    a) it has a DVD drive (it looks like it has from the pictures but it's not in the specs)

    b) it has the "Fn Lock" function (or if it's possible to reverse the F1-F12 keys & the hotkeys)?

None of the stores near me has this model in stock so I can't check it out myself.

    Many thanks in advance.

    • It has a DVD drive. If I get time, I plan to set it up later this arvo so can report back afterwards re "Fn Lock".

  • Bought one from HN - negotiated swapping out the HD for a SSD ( 256 gig Kingston ) for an additional $200 as I was concerned about the battery life with the HD as is for my son when he starts Uni

Bonus is that they are going to but the 1 gig HD in a caddy and my son can use this as an external HD

All in all am happy for under a grand for a laptop with reasonable specs
