Most efficient way of using Myki

Hello,

Seeking advice on the most efficient way of using Myki.

Currently I'm just using Myki money as wife and I work in the CBD and we drive in maybe once a week or so.

We are moving closer to the CBD so we will definitely use public transport Monday - Friday.

I will "occasionally" use PT on the weekends, but that's only very occasionally.

I know there's the early bird, however I am not willing/not practical to go to work that early to save $3.90.

Considering I use it 5 days a week the 7 day pass has no benefit to me as it costs exactly the same.

What confuses me are the 28/29/30 etc day options on Myki, what's the benefit of each one?

TL;DR - Use Myki Monday - Friday, what's the best pass to use and why.

TIA

  • I used to buy a pass but they kept jacking up the price so for me money makes more sense as I also drive once a fortnight or so. As soon as you have a single sick day or decide to drive, a pass is more expensive. It's rather stupid IMO.

The cheapest way to buy myki is through the PTUA discount.

If you buy a myki pass on a monday for 33 days it will end on a friday then skip that weekend and start again on the monday and so on. It will cost $154.44 for 25 business days so $6.18 per business day with most weekends thrown in for free. You may take up to 5 business days not using public transport in that period (equivalent to 1 per week) and still be ahead.

    • Thanks for the reply, would you suggest purchasing the pass online or at the station?

As I know there's a delay for it to kick in, i.e. if I was to start a 33 day pass on the Monday, should I purchase it say on the Saturday online, then it activates when I first touch on (on the Monday).

Sorry about the noob questions, myki money just seems a million times easier (though more expensive)

      • I haven't really noticed a delay in the time for a pass to kick in. I usually buy my pass in the morning of travel and had no issues.

        • great, I'll give it a go, otherwise I'll just get to the station slightly earlier to use the machines

      • Not sure sorry, have never needed to buy myki passes yet but had previously looked into it

      • It can take a day or two for online purchased passes to be visible on the card (though they won't activate until first touch on). Station machine purchases are instant but are often packed on Monday mornings with everyone buying on the spot and a lot of stations with only a machine or two available.

I have an annual pass deducted in $50-something increments fortnightly as part of the Myki Commuter Club program, which works out for me given I commute by train 8-10 days a fortnight and also use every second weekend or so.

        • Yes, the place I work at offers discounted Myki and include it as part of salary packaging.

Personally I just don't like the commitment, so would prefer to go about it independently.

However in hindsight, given I raised this topic I should probably revisit it.

is to not use it at all.

  • Sydney man here.

Can you top it up with a pass at Lara station or Avalon airport? I assume it works on vLine trains? Can I get to Torquay on a vLine bus with a Myki card? No offence but Victoria's transport websites suck even more than ours. And I is stupid.

Interesting that even expensive stupid Sydney has a weekly cap ($60, which I believe is still more than a Zone 1 full week of travel in Melbourne from Jan 1). If there was a monthly cap we'd probably find a way to abuse it.
