  • Edit: wanted to know what choice had to say, saw OP's reference to neil's post.. thank you both!

Wow forgot about that comment. Must have been a premonition as my old dishwasher died last month.

I got the Bosch SMS40E08AU from Appliances Online last week, they pricematch and deliver for free. TGG charges at least $50 delivery or $70 if you want them to take the old one.

Just installed today. I thought I stuffed it up as I couldn't hear anything but apparently most modern dishwashers are quiet. According to the Choice article, dishwashers have improved a lot in the past 10 years.

    • What's the length of the pipes at the rear? Did you self install?

      • About 1 or 1.5m.

Yeah, simple to install. There is a drain hose, water hose and the plug for electricity. The fiddly things were: I had to saw a bigger hole to accommodate the bigger end piece of the water hose. Also screwing the four feet and making sure the whole thing was level was also a tedious process.

        • Thanks. Happy to try the install myself, but not yet decided which brand to go with. My old dishlex still works, I just have to manually advance the dial to complete the whole cycle. I like the build of my 15yo dishlex. No plastic like a lot of the modern dishwashers.

          @unity1:

Power cord is about 170 cm.
Waste water hose is about 170 cm.
Cold water hose is about 160 cm but has an anti-flood attachment. A cut out area should be about 10cm x 5cm to allow this attachment through.

You can get extension power/water cables from customer support. There may be a length limit.

    • Is this model the one made in Turkey with the plastic base?

Sorry, can't recall what was at the bottom. Any other way to tell?

        yes. polinox plastic base

    • Neil - thanks for the Choice links - very useful.

The detergent link you gave makes for interesting reading, especially the drop for at least one detergent. Wonder if they have changed?

The other thing about the detergents comes from my sister's experience. She was into the "eco-friendly" versions and used them exclusively. A couple of years later they had to call out a tech because the machine wasn't heating and the overall performance had dropped.

The tech took lots of calcium like sediment and goo off the heating element (replaced it because of corrosion) and out of the pump.

He claimed it was the eco-friendly detergent and told her to switch to Finish for that reason. She did and has had no problems since. It might be a coincidence, but I have sometimes found similar results that seem to be linked to the eco versions.

Be interesting if the tests measured sediments left.

  • Got a Bosch and it's awesome. Thanks for sharing.

Actually everyone from Hardly Normal to Bing Lee is running this special at the moment.

  • A dishwasher repair man said to me he'd only by Bosch. They also rate highly on Choice reliability surveys, only Miele better IIRC.
I got the model up from this and very impressed. This one is well rated, only let down by its water and energy use compared to others. Fantastic price

  • I bought a Bosch model very similar to this one a few years ago.
Always took an age to wash and after about 6 months it sometimes skipped parts of the cycle so it could either take a very long time or about 10 mins.

Had some circuit board and switching replaced and when it eventually started doing the same thing again but now out of warranty, just, I just trashed it and bought a cheap Aldi model which has been flawless (so far).

Other Bosch appliances I bought at the time such as washing machine and dryer have been without fault. Very happy with them.

    • Might be similar to the one I bought. No issues with the cycle but almost always left crap all over my dishes no matter how clean it was before the cycle. I had an almost identical earlier model prior to that, that would clean anything and everything.

Bosch has started a line of "cheaper" goods that make compromises. I think this model made in Turkey has a plastic base instead of a stainless steel base. Would be sensible to check in store before buying.

  • Got a similar one (the 50) and it does a great job, paid $807 about a year ago. Seems like a good deal.

  • I like to save money as the next guy, but I 'd go with Appliances Online with this price difference.
FREE connection, removal of old unit & recycling.

You don't have to do anything, just sit back and watch the cricket. Awesome!

    • Free connection doesn't apply to dishwashers, only washing machines, fridges, and microwaves (e.g. things that take 2 seconds to connect). However getting rid of the old unit is handy.

      • Bummer, thanks :)

  • We've got a Bosch SMS50 series dishwasher and it's fantastic.
So quiet that you barely notice it's even on.
Would imagine that the 40 series are similar.

  • I see the plastic base as a non-issue. The general consensus is that the majority of low to mid range dishwashers fail in 4-5 years. These models pay for themselves with the opportunity cost gains in free time saved by not standing at a sink washing and rinsing.

You can purchase a high end model for $1000+ to last 8 - 10 years or purchase another low to mid range model in 4-5 years which should have better features. I'd say the latter option would leave you in front.

  • I got the white one in TGG 20% eBay sale. Very happy with it. Don't see why the plastic base should be a concern at all.

  • I bought a Delonghi dishwasher for $398 during last TGG ebay sale.
it has been good so far, good value considering it scored 75 in the review by choice…

  • i bought this yesterday, connected all the hoses it works for 10 min's then the check water light comes on & the machine stops.
Don't know whats wrong ! hoses are fine no kinks.

    • There is a fault table at the back of the manual with troubleshooting steps.

    • My husband installed ours yesterday - had to do quite a lot of fiddling around - soldering, extending hoses etc. We have never had a dishwasher before so there was much excitement. We ran it on the normal cycle and after an hour or so the check water light came on. Turns out it was blockage in the hose because it was touching the other hose. All fixed now. Apparently it can be a filter issue as well
