Can't Decide, Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 4, Lenovo Yoga 910 or New MacBook Pro 2016

Hey Ozb,

Lenovo has a sale, which finishes 9pm tomorrow (30/12/16)

Need some opinions on which of the laptops are better than eachother etc and why.

I cannot make my mind up on what I want.

What I would like:
16gb ram, atleast 8 hours battery, thin profile, good sound quality

Thanks

  • Kind of in the same boat as you. Except everywhere I look they say not to get the new generation of MBP, so leaning towards the previous generation in that regard, but this is actually my last preference.

Don't let the Lenovo sale be a determining factor. If you look at the savings for Yoga 910, the most you could save is $130, a better sale will come along once the laptop has aged a couple of months and their sales slow down.

As for the X1 Carbon, by the time I add a CPU that supports the 16GB RAM configuration and add it a PCIE SDD and upgrade the display, I'm already at $3,000, so this is kind of my second last preference.

910 is my top preference, but going to hold out for better deals.

    • One problem with X1 (Carbon or Yoga) is that 16GB RAM option is only available on the i7-6600U model, which is expensive especially when you don't want to pay for the CPU gain that you might not need. Better go with the current T460s deal where you can grab a stick of 16GB DDR4 SO-DIMM elsewhere for cheap.

    • Yeah you are right, the x1 with the config I want would bump up to 2.5, 3k easy…ah

  • Was going to get Yoga 910 as soon as it came down below 1.5k, but now waiting for a bargain on an XPS 13 or 15, either from the outlet or just a good deal like that one from MS Store in November.

  • Stuff all those.

Get a Latitude 14 7000 (E7470). Better battery life than a T460s, WAN slot, can be upgraded to a 16GB quite easily and a better screen.

  • Forgot to mention ,

The reason why I'm in such a rush is because I'm in the process of selling my Macbook 12" full spec'd.

The Dell XPS to me, the only reason why I'm not sold is because I use my laptop in bed and the vents are situated in the bottom which means thermals wont be good, unless anyone can tell me otherwise.

Why 8gb ram? Because on my MB 12 I have 8gb right now and I run a gazillion tabs often and it chokes up (yes i know..close them) but it's a habit.

    • The XPS is fine in bed.
