New Credit Card Eligibility

Have been in Australia for a year, had one NOA (notice of assessment) for year ending June 2016. SF employed through an ABN, can you recommend any credit card for me? I tried the Bankwest Zero platinum and the Commonwealth Bank low rate for the deals but got rejected on both as do not have two NOA's.
Earn decent income as a GP.

Thanks

  • Try Amex directly. Have a look at their cards on https://www.americanexpress.com/australia/
And then apply through a referral for bonus points: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/american_express_referrals

I am self-employed, and I have the same problem. I applied for the Bankwest Zero and was immediately rejected by the automatic system; doesn't even ask for any info. I gave up and went with a number of credit cards that are easier to get approvals.

Credit card wise, I ended up with:

    • 28 degrees card - for overseas transactions. Although, they brought in some changes recently, and this thread posted yesterday discusses some of the pitfalls: Beware of 28 Degrees Credit Card.

    • Amex Essential and Qantas Discovery - both fee-free, they accepted my applications without even asking for supporting documentation. My comment here provides some details about them and Amex cards in general. I also posted about the Essential card here

BTW The Citiplus Debit card, is also very good, if you are thinking of a card with no foreign fees for overseas purchases.

bluesky, I noticed you always taking the time to help Ozbargain member's quires related to new credit card questions. Just want to say thank you (as you also help me earlier so I was able to make decision and applied for an Amex Card)!! You are an AWESOME ozbargain member !!

Thank you so much, Purple, it is very kind of you to say so. It makes me very happy as well.

Truth is, other members here originally helped me understand about this area, and which I am benefiting from now. I like to be in a friendly, helpful community. So if I can help, it would be my privilege. Also, my knowledge is confined to a few topics unfortunately. So, many other topics I wish I could help in, but have no expertise to do so :-)

  • Does the RACGP have an affiliation with any bank and a lot of times these types of bodies (eg CPA) have negotiate deals for the benefit of their members?

  • it doesnt suprise me bankwest is owned by cba they are a bunch of morons. for businesses under 2 years its hard getting approved. it may help if you apply at the same bank where you have your business transaction account. however i found westpac business cards to be more easily approved but i dont recommend their transaction accounts as they charge as a wounded bull, bankwest business zero account is best to avoid fees. BTw if you have a personal amex from anywhere in the world you can transfer it to Australia then after 18 months apply for a business amex card. im still on the hunt for a business card that earns points and is free for life. missed out on the fee free masters charge card and EA business charge card so i have to put up with calling up requesting fee waivers every year.

    • Thanks for the info. Fortunately, worked around it and went with other providers which are a bit more laxed. And never have to look back :-)

  • Bluesky,Thanks a lot for your prompt advice

    • You are most welcome :-)

  • I tried to go through your referral link as a thank you but it wouldn't allow me as I need to be self employed for at least 18 months, went through the direct link which does not seem to have that restriction and got approved, Thanks and apologies.

    • Hi Pagu, if you are referring to me (since mine is the nearest comment above), thank you and no apologies needed; happy to help regardless. Feel free to PM if you have questions about the card, its use etc. Cheers.
